Well done MOM for identifying this horse so early.
Pinatubo is a very, very good two year old. Not many put up a performance that good this early in the season. So on “form” he shouldn’t be any bigger than 5/2. However, is just the type to be at his best early, small, well muscled. So may be best to keep him going at two. Group 1 in Ireland looks his for the taking, then the Dewhurst. Yes, Mill Reef wasn’t very big (interestingly another small two year old from the same Balding yard, Forest Flower also trained on well to win the Irish 1000). So small horses can train on, but there’s a bigger chance of not doing so than with bigger types. That said, won’t have much – if any – improvement to make to win an average 2000 Guineas. Could have a few lbs in hand by the end of 2019. Just the doubt about training on and (as LS points out) Godolphin’s best horses don’t often make it to the Classics anyway. Suspect has something to do with the owner rather than trainer. 5/2 makes no appeal at this stage, but let’s celebrate how good a two year old Appleby has on our hands.
Value Is EverythingJuly 30, 2019 at 17:19 #1449912Hein, LS said nothing wrong.
Value Is EverythingJuly 30, 2019 at 17:38 #1449913Well done all Pinatubo fans
couldn’t be happier for him and everyone who backed him 6/4 was a really good price.
Platinum Star disappointing but his price told the story along with Visinari who had every chance.Ginge just to put records straight I would never diss a horse as you implied, I think it’s obvious if you have ever read any of my posts I love all horses however they run and believe they always run to the best of their abilities as to how they are feeling on the day.
Good luck for the rest of Goodwood Ginge, can we leave if there now please and celebrate a great race.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 30, 2019 at 19:08 #1449924I rather take Positive for the Guineas than Pinatubo, as impressive as he was (which was a lot).
No scope and is peaking out as a 2yo IMO
Either that or he’s the second coming, I take my chances that he’s not.July 30, 2019 at 19:15 #1449928Pinatubo gets 125p from Timeform. A typical champion 2-y-o rating and we’re not yet out of July
July 30, 2019 at 19:45 #1449933Impressive win, actually had the first 2 in the end. I refuse to get too excited about 2 year olds this year until I see them turning up as 3yr olds!!
There should be a big discussion about Visinari on here as well. How can he show such ability and speed first time out and then be frankly pretty poor since, especially today!
Bad training? Bad management? Not developing? Just doesn’t like racing anymore?
July 30, 2019 at 20:41 #1449944Poor Jack, sorry for not writing on the same level as you!
But obviously I wouldn’t agree with you that yours is higher..
You know why I didn’t write Pinatubo up here beforehand? When I read all the glorious “analysis” here how damn close this race would get, how much Pinatubo would come under pressure, how dramatically a horse like Visinari would improve etc then I thought that it was really pointless here, and that I better keep my thoughts “Pinatubo will thrive this field” and that I put 200€ at 9/4 to myself! And after the race? People pretended to be oh so surprised about the outcome, but there was absolutely nothing surprising about it, as thankfully Joe pointed out rightly: Pinatubo did exactly what he did in his previous races, just even more dominant, and his “rivals” did so too!
Don’t worry Jac, these are my last words on this thread, and you can write your usual appreciation lines to Joni, as he has won with the volcano too
July 30, 2019 at 20:42 #1449945It was a bit of an I was there moment. 10 years to the day since last goodwood visit and couldn’t have chosen a better one.
Great course isn’t it always?
The acceleration from such a field was breathtaking. The field strung out. This one has the lot. Really goes about his work too.
July 30, 2019 at 20:44 #1449948Ginge – I wonder what price I’d have got on him for the 2000 Guineas when he was still 3/1 for the Woodcote.
I just love the horse. It’s nice to feel like you’ve found one early and they win and then keep going up the levels still winning.
He’s the flat version of Benie Des Dieux for me and even if he never wins me another penny, he’ll go down as one of my favourite horses of the last few years.
July 30, 2019 at 20:46 #1449950Hein – I feel like you’re just overly sensitive.
Because people were thinking that horses like Visinari would improve and could beat him, to decided posting your opinion on Pinatubo winning was ‘pointless’. That’s nothing short of absurd for an Internet forum.
July 30, 2019 at 21:33 #1449955He has a lovely turn of foot mom. As soon as he past the post on Sat at RA I checked oddschecker on the way home that evening. Laddies were still 18s for the 2000g then. Let’s hope he trains on
July 30, 2019 at 23:23 #1449969Yes that was nice early spotting MOM
