It’s hardly worth the bother of having drug tests when bute and lasix are allowed….. and I wonder what Sheik Mohammed did with Mr Bin Shafya, not that I’m suggesting anything that might get me sued!

Paul, regarding the BHA’s rules, the BHA changed their rules for "international participants" fairly recently, so in simple terms how did they apply to Starspangledbanner, who himself failed a test for Altrenogest when in the care of Leon Corstens (a regular offender) in Australia? I know it was a deceleration thing regarding certain steroids, but how do the BHA apply this thinking in a situation where the horse has been transferred ahead of running in Britain?

Silvoir has covered most points expertly.

When UK horses run in most countries they are only tested post-race depending on their finishing position.

However when going to race in countries like Hong Kong and Singapore they have to sign a declaration of what medication they have been on in the last few months. If the trainer or authorities are concerned then they can send a pre-export sample to the overseas jockey club for testing in their own laboratories.

Similarly now horses shipping in from outside Europe to run in an overseas trainer’s name must fill in a similar declaration. They are also likely to be pre-race tested – which is far better than possibly being disqualified post-race.

As for Jose’s comments only USA allow Lasix – although trainers give it in varying doses. America also allow bute in training but most states ban it’s use within 24 or 48 hours of a race. Many states also now do pre-race testing on all runners for CO2 levels to avoid milkshaking.

strikingly, Canada alone is listed as not signed up to any part at all of the IFHA’s agreement on prohibited substances.

anyone know the story there ?

Former Champion Jockey involved in Race Fixing??

Rumours are wild at the moment of the famous 5 and many are including a certain ex champion jockey. However this thread is not to discuss the champion jockey but what effect on the game would it have if a former champion jockey was involved???

If the guys at the top of the profession is at it..what hope is their for the rest of the lads coming through??

    Thoughts??

It won’t change anything. Race fixing has been going on since racing started 200 years ago. People will still bet on it & race meetings will still go ahead.

If fixing has been going on by experienced jockeys and they get caught (and hopefully put away for several years) it may act as a deterrent to younger jockeys.

Before we get carried away with how crooked racing is let’s not forget that recently we have had the Pakistan cricket team betting scandal (and I doubt it’s just the Pakistani team that’s involved). Plus we’ve had fixed tennis matches, snooker matches and even football matches in recent times (Italian football is rife with corruption and there are plenty of rumors about the Premier League & Scottish Football).

Unfortunately where there is betting there is corruption. Hopefully it is the minority that are corrupt rather than the majority.

Betting is starting to ruin the integrity of sports.

I know it goes on a lot in Ireland where horses are "pulled" but rarely does anyone lay them as such(needs the run etc), tbh i not hugely against that but where horses are being pulled to make money from losing is very dangerous place to be.

I am dying to know the full 5….i know for certain i can figure out 3 of them

Just wondering why it’s always UK racing that’s reported.
Obviously, we’re more exposed to UK news, but still: is it that Betfair is such a market force here that laying is sooo tempting?

Maybe it’s naive to call it ‘tempting’ – more ‘blimey, thanks for the oppo, Guv’, where ‘Guv’ represents the various parties controlling betting activities in the UK & allowing p2p betting to open up.

It’ll be interesting to see how NY & California(?) get on with

    their

proposed opening up to exchange betting.

Of the other big racing countries, there may be some with exchange betting, but I don’t know. Australia? South Africa? (Not France, bien sur.) Why no news about fixing & laying from these places?

A famous starter in Ireland used to say "non triers to the back please"

Its good that the cheats are being weeded out , although its 3 years too late for me , flat betting had become too costly , I knew in my heart it was mostly bent , followed by a raft of races for pitiful prize money , I also knew it would get worse as a result of that

Its simples races for 1500 quid , where the costs of running is probably half that , is an invitation to get jiggy …so its no surprise

only mugs bet on any low prize money races

    I like those stories.
    It’s like Agatha Christie.

Fixing has always been with us.
The award winning cartoon made by the Greek Giles Kostas Mitropoulos, pictures a goalie diving to catch a bundle of bank notes while the ball goes the other way. That was in 1959 and I don’t seem to have image link to it.

    In racing it’s like this:
If you talk privately to many jocks they will boast to you of having stolen the statue of liberty from New York, and then put it back.
This is by way of "recruiting bunnies" as we call it.
Infront of national tv or the press you will hear the pious indignations.

You can’t beat the system, whatever the authority in charge.

6 years ago I met a stable lad from Iraq.
We have many stable lads here from Arab countries.
He said to me Saddam Hussein had his brother as chief of the police force and they were fixing all the races.

At the same time the reluctance of the authorities is diabolical. A story about this later.

    360 Degrees,
Re: corruption in Australian racing you clearly haven’t been looking – there’s numerous stories around of jockeys carving up the "jockey challenge", being banned for betting on the Tote etc.

    OK. Thanks.

I guess they just don’t get aired over here, then.
