Thought it was a joke at first but apparently not.
Frankie Dettori returns next week and the opening race at Leicester on Monday is being run as The EBF Welcome Back Frankie Maiden Stakes.
May 14, 2013 at 15:50 #439593Agreed, Kenh, quite absurd.
Like it or not though Frankie Dettori is a huge pull for arms length racing fans.
His exploits in Big Brother and where ever else he has had his face have ensured he is not forgotten and will make full use of the opportunities to get himself, ahem, ‘back on the horse’

Is the next race on the card "The Mahmood Al Zarooni Good Luck With Your Appeal Mate Handicap" by any chance?
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 14, 2013 at 16:25 #439598Frankie’s offence is not in the same league as Zarooni’s. Why not welcome Frankie back? Done his time and should be forgiven.
Value Is EverythingMay 14, 2013 at 17:43 #439604Yes, if you really feel the need to put the bunting out as an individual but absolutely no need to contrive a race title. Just shows how silly the sport can be at times.
May 14, 2013 at 18:11 #439606Seems like the world is changing before our very eyes.A quiet shake hands and a smile, but bunting,or named races I don’t think so.

Kindly sponsored by Coke Zero?

I think you’re missing the point if you think it is about not welcoming him back. These things should be done with a little more humility, especially in this case when Mr D had so flagrantly flouted the laws he is bound to by his professional engagements.
Done his time yes, forgiven, well no one really gives a hoot anyway, doubt there will be too many adoring housewives in disarray crying over their Frankie calenders. However, his performance in the saddle and commitment to the sport from here on in should be what he is judged on.
Not Frankies fault in fairness, BHA should not have allowed it, poor form from the racecourse, unnecessary exposure that could have been avoided.

And how many times does he have to do his time and still be forgiven?
It’s not as though it’s the first time he’s been caught with Charlie.

May 14, 2013 at 20:19 #439617I think you’re missing the point Ginge. To name a race ‘welcome back……’ for someone who has been banned for six months for breaking the rules, not to mention the possibly that he committed a criminal offence is crass stupidity and really does bring racing into disrepute. I wonder what the French authorities think.
May 14, 2013 at 20:34 #439621Wonder how long it’ll be before we get the Clare Balding My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen Stakes

May be the race title is a little wrong Ken, should be the "Welcome Back Frankie But Don’t Do It Again Stakes" Not to welcome Frankie back at all is surely to continue punishing him. He did not deliberately stop horses, he did not dope horses. Leicester probably want to publicise the event to get racegoers to their track. I am not particularly in favour of them doing so Ken, but if they really want to – no big deal. It’s not "crass stupidity" or "bring racing in to disrepute", they are not condoning the offence, just good to see him back AFTER HIS crass stupidity.

If the world could actually sort out its drug problems rather than class everything it isn’t sure about as ‘illegal’ we wouldn’t be having these issues. Making things like cocaine/weed/etc against the law is not the answer. With legality you would also gain intelligence and people would be taught from a young age the genuine effects of these drugs rather than being hushed away and unspoken-about; that method is no good to anyone.
Anyway, welcome back Frankie!!

I would go further and provide all such drugs free-of-charge via an NHS prescription upon presentation of a personal disclaimer. With the government as purchaser, the substances would be unadulterated and could be administered in a clean, safe enviroment with plenty of support for those who wish to come off them. This would make all drug dealing completely pointless overnight, lead to a truly massive reduction in crime and save the country billions.
Until such an inevitable point however, what Dettori did was illegal and as such should not be ‘celebrated’ in such a way.

I agree wholeheartedly Mike, i guess it’s one of those things that takes someone with massive balls to change and there are very very few people in politics these days like that (especially near the tops of parties anyway) so I can’t see it happening anytime soon!
It’s clearly a tricky situation involving Frankie, they aren’t celebrating his drug use but moreso using it to lure potential clients to their track. It’s not ideal but not the end of the world either.

May 15, 2013 at 11:58 #439670Criminality has usurped any pretence of fairness and plain dealing that may have existed long ago. Racing celebrates the dopers and the pullers in equal measure.
