The answers:
1. The first race meeting I attended was at the July Course in Newmarket. TRUE. It was in 1986. I saw Green Desert win the July Cup.
2. I have attended race meetings at every racecourse in the UK, including at the defunct tracks of Towcester and Folkestone. TRUE. I completed the set in 2015. I have also visited over half the tracks in Ireland, with 11 to go.
3. I have completed the Coast to Coast walk from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay. FALSE. My father has completed it, maybe I will one day.
4. Graeme Souness and his wife Karen (she used to put up the letters on “Countdown”) used to be my next door neighbours. FALSE. Sorry, Nathan! Mr and Mrs Souness did live in a large house in my street when he was manager of Liverpool. A few of the neighbours remember them but it was a few years before I moved here.
5. I was in New York on 11th September 2001. FALSE, I am relieved to say. I was there on 11th September 1999.
6. I once met Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones at Windsor and tipped him the winner of the next race. TRUE. We were both waiting for our companions to finish in the ladies room. We got talking and he asked what I liked in the next. I told him and it won but I don’t know if he backed it.
7. I was at school with Rick Astley. FALSE. He went to one of the neighbouring schools. One of my teachers used to teach there and told us he taught him. My school’s claim to fame was our woodwork teacher was Bernie Clifton’s brother (young people will have to Google him).
8. I once sat next to snooker referee Jan Verhaas on a flight to Amsterdam. TRUE. It was the day after the World Snooker Championships had finished. Mr Verhaas must have travelled from Sheffield to Liverpool to get the easy Jet flight home.
9. I once interviewed Jane Asher for a position on the Board of the National Portrait Gallery. FALSE. My brother did. She didn’t get the job either, which I have never let him forget! I did once receive a message from her brother Peter Asher, the record producer. But that is not quite as good as a claim to fame.
10. I won a quiz at a Grand National preview night and my prize was presented by Clare Balding. TRUE. It was in 1998 in a club on the Melling Road, after racing on the Thursday night. The quiz was about the history of the Grand National. I scored 29/30. The only answer I got wrong was to a question about the film “National Velvet”, which I have never seen. My prize was £30 and a bottle of wine, presented by Ms Balding.
Later on she chaired a panel which previewed the National and some of the other races. The panel comprised John Inverdale, Tony McCoy, Graham Bradley, Charlie Brooks and Steve McManaman.
Balding and Inverdale were quite pleasant to talk to afterwards. I didn’t like the others much, especially Brooks.
January 18, 2024 at 10:47 #1677700Great stuff, CAS – I’ve met John Inverdale a couple of times when he and his family were guests in the same box as me at Kempton’s King George meeting.
I also found him a likeable bloke – which is rare for me as I hardly ever like anyone!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 18, 2024 at 11:14 #1677702I thought it was quite amusing when tin eared Steve McManaman advised an audience in a working man’s club to “have a fortune” on Unsinkable Boxer the next day. He clearly didn’t realise not everyone earned thousands a week…
January 18, 2024 at 12:22 #1677710Well done, Rummy. Thanks for you detailed answers Cork, it was quite interesting to learn more about you.
January 18, 2024 at 12:25 #1677711Great answers Cork.
I did look up Bernie Clifton and apparently he appeared on The Voice not so long ago so perhaps would be familiar to some younger viewers. He’s also in the video for the re-released Amarillo with Tony Christie, Peter Kay et al so I have at least seen him in that.
I hope you and Jan Verhaas had an extra legroom seat, they are cramped enough for me and he looks to have a good few inches on top.
January 18, 2024 at 12:41 #1677715Thanks to everyone for their replies.
As I recall, Jan fell asleep on the flight, so stimulating was my company! Once we had landed at Schiphol, he walked out straight out of the exit without waiting for any luggage, so he was travelling light!

Agreed – a key ingredient for this rolling quiz, I feel.
Looking forward to discovering five things about Neil I didn’t know.
