    Thanks BigG,

The Results are in and we have a clear winner.
But while I write it all out… If anyone else wants to have a go at my 10 tiebreakers just for fun or wants to make any comments on them then feel free. :good:

Absolutely tremendous, GT, and just a gentle reminder that whoever has won in taking their turn needs to come up with ten statements, five true and five false please, unless they have already won one of these and want to donate their go to a willing recipient.

    Great stuff.

Here are the results of the Tiebreaker:

    ………………………………………TRUE OR FALSE………………………………………….

    Q1 TIEBREAKER:
THE SAME EX-PUPIL OF MY SCHOOL ALSO BROKE A WORLD RECORD OVER 400 METRES.

    TRUE
All three of you got this one wrong. To expand on the answer to the first set of questions… I went to Romsey School and the ex-pupil 400 metre runner was Todd Bennett. He did win the 1981 400 metres European Junior Championships. He came back to the school (I believe it was 82 or 83) and ran against the then pupils on our Sports Day. But The gold medals he won were for the 1982 and 1986 Commonwealth Games 4 x 400 metres. Perhaps best known for his 4 x 400 metres Olympic Silver medal (with team-mates Kriss Akabusi, Phil Brown and Garry Cook) at the 1984 games. (Strange – Phil Brown was the name of the Lambourn quizmaster). Yes, Marlingford, Bennett was also later a team-mate of Roger Black for both country and Team Solent with Akabusi. Todd was shorter than the vast majority of 400 metre runners, so was perfectly built for the Indoor banked bends and (according to his Wikipedia page) broke the 400 metres World Indoor Record in 1985, posting a time of 44.56 seconds.

    Q2 TIEBREAKER:
THE SAME WEEK AS BEING ON THE FRONT PAGE, ANOTHER PICTURE OF ME WAS THIS TIME INSIDE THE RACING POST.

    TRUE
All three got this right. Couple of days after being on the front cover a picture in silhouette of me (my face breaks every camera) and a racing pal of mine was inside. Evidently deep in discussion about form. We used to stand viewing the races just outside the journalist’s room. With me and my Goodwood hat I suppose I was an obvious target for photographers. My avatar is another Racing Post picture from a similar position.

    Q3 TIEBREAKER:
DAVID ELSWORTH ONCE DESCRIBED HIMSELF TO ME AS “I’M SO CLEVER”.

    FALSE
All three got this wrong, but it does sound like something he’d say and is extremely close to what he actually said… I went to a West Berkshire Racing Club event with guest speakers Ian Balding, Jeff Smith and David Elsworth. I asked David whether there was any secret to getting so many front running, tough, genuine and consistent horses over both codes? He replied “It’s ‘cos I’m brilliant”.

    Q4 TIEBREAKER:
MY GRANDFATHER WAS KILLED BY AN ADDER SNAKE.

    FALSE
I wasn’t sure if it was this forum or somewhere else I’d said – probably here. It was actually my great uncle who got bitten by an adder and drove himself to hospital – he survived. My paternal grandfather was a cowman and wasn’t so lucky. He did once retire, but missed his cows so much went back to work. Not great on his feet. Opened a gate for the tractor to go through, but while he was in the process of shutting it a bull charged. Pinning him against the gate post. The farm owners had been warned about this bull before and even afterwards didn’t want to put it down (worth a lot of money). Would not have done so too, if it wasn’t for the intervention of the farmers union. This all happened in around 1961 at Hatherden, the same village (some time later) where Emma Lavelle had her first yard.

    Q5 TIEBREAKER:
MY FIRST ANTE-POST WINNER WAS SHEIKH MOHAMMED’S OH SO SHARP IN THE 1985 1000 GUINEAS.

    TRUE
Backed Oh So Sharp to win the first leg of her “Triple Crown” @ 5/2; not much better than SP. I’d been really impressed with her Fillies Mile victory the previous season. Still can’t believe she won the Guineas! Just getting up in a finish of short heads (what we’d now call noses). I didn’t back her (didn’t back against her either so I shouted her home) in the Oaks and Leger. However, did reinvest some of the winnings on Slip Anchor ante-post @ 16/1 for that year’s Derby. :yahoo:

Q6 TIEBREAKER :I SAW LAWRIE’S SAINTS WITH KEVIN KEEGAN AND MICK CHANNON PLAY AT THE DELL.

    FALSE
I remember seeing Lawrie’s Saints win the FA Cup with Mick Channon in 1976 (christ! 48 years ago) at Wembley… Well, they were playing at Wembley, I saw it on TV. I have seen Kevin Keegan, just coming out of his Romsey home at the time he was playing for Southampton… And I met Mick Channon on a WBRC stable visit to his West Ilsley stable. However, the only time I saw The Saints in person, play live… was much later – the 2009 – 10 season. In a semi-final of the (EFL) Crown Paints Trophy (if I remember the title rightly) against MK Dons at St Mary’s. They won and went on to lift the trophy! :yahoo:

    Q7 TIEBREAKER:
I WENT TO THE VERY FIRST LAMBOURN OPEN DAY AND THE FIRST STABLE I VISITED WAS NICKY HENDERSON’S.

    TRUE
My memory is not what it was, but I believe the primary reason I went was to see my ante-post 33/1 winner of the Grand National, Mr Frisk. Certainly remember going to the first one though. as it was a new venture. In those early years I’d come down the hill into Lambourn and the first car park was opposite Henderson’s yard. It wasn’t until later that Nicky swapped yards with Peter Walwyn.

    Q8 TIEBREAKER:
THE EVENT I DID THE NAZI SALUTE TO GOD SAVE THE QUEEN WAS HELD IN THE GROUNDS OF THE CURRENT KING’S GREAT UNCLE.

    TRUE
Yes the story gets worse! I did the salute in the grounds of King Charles’s great uncle Lord Louis Mountbatten’s home, Broadlands. I believe it was a celebration of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Broadlands is on the outskirts of Romsey. Lord Louis and Prince Charles were quite close. Many years later Charles and Diana spent part of their honeymoon at Broadlands.

    Q9 TIEBREAKER:
I GOT PETER WALWYN TO SIGN MY COPY OF HIS BIOGRAPHY “HANDY ALL THE WAY”.

    FALSE
I did have a copy of Peter’s biography at the time, but I don’t like asking and this was at a function where the Racing elite could relax together. Fair play to people who are interested in signatures, just not something I’ve ever been interested in.

    Q10 TIEBREAKER:
IF IT WASN’T FOR NOT ALLOWING FOR TRAFFIC PROBLEMS GETTING THERE, I WOULD’VE HAD FIVE WINNERS THAT FIRST DAY JUMP RACING.

    FALSE
All three got this wrong too. Nothing to do with the traffic. The reason I was so late getting to my first jumps meeting was the vehicle I travelled in got a puncture. I’ll never quite know for certain because in those days I made my mind up who to back at the course. But it is very possible I’d have had all six winners but for the puncture. The race card I bought had comments on the first race winner, Roadster “should go close”. ie Better comments than any of the other runners and in those times “value was not everything”. Second race winner Western Sunset “fair performer on his day, suited by 2 1/2m and some give underfoot” (conditions to suit). But the second placed Lord Leighton had a comment “one to consider for each way betting if the ground comes up soft”, so might have done him EW instead; toss up. One thing for sure; never been so close to going through the card since! Can’t complain, almost £200 up at my first jumps meeting and yet another reason I got hooked on Racing.

    TIEBREAKER SCORES:
    X / X / / / X X X X Ex RubyLight scores 4
    X / X / X X X / / X BigG scores 4
    X / X / / / / X / X Marlingford scores 6

Marlingford quote: “More tricky questions! My original answers were exactly the same as ERL’s, so I have switched round my answers to 7 and 9 to avoid a tie”.

Changing 7 and 9 worked for you Marlingford. Well done!
Commiserations Erl and BigG, both once again come close.

Sorry I’ve gone on a bit (or more than a bit) too much; enjoyed doing these and looking back.
    Great idea Chezza.

With far less speed than Todd Bennett I pass the baton over to Marlingford.

Cheers GT, great questions. I got a bit lucky there with the switch as my original answers were the same as ERL’s!

I will post my set of 10 shortly, by tomorrow at the latest.

Great stuff Ginger and looking forward to your mix of interesting stories and tall tales Marlingford.

I might win one eventually, does give me more time to come up with stories like beating Mussolini’s great grandson at snooker with the match taking place in front of hungry lions at the Colosseum when I went on holiday to Rome or something.

We are talking THE “Royal Ascot”, Marlingford?
Not just mouse racing at your local village hall that was given the title “Royal Ascot” for the day?
