….or Imperial Commander
April 8, 2010 at 23:16 #288737Frankly, IC just ran desperately and I cannot see a good reason as to why?
The horse is fit and well and has suddenly become a bad jumper?!
I think he probably was beaten when falling, but I honestly think he could beat the same horses on that track if it were run again in a month. Maybe, he would then lose because he was not "fresh" enough!
Sssssh, just too bad to be true. Maybe something will come to light…

April 8, 2010 at 23:19 #288738Hands up I gave IC every chance, and he was poor, but Nacarat’s definitely flatlining, so no joke there
April 8, 2010 at 23:39 #288741Nacarat’s jumping was desperate. 4 major mistakes. He’s not as good as I thought tbh and won’t be backing him again.
April 9, 2010 at 12:07 #288850Why are people so quick to want to dismiss IC? No Gold Cup winner has done well at Aintree for ages. Additionally Denman fell in the race last year, Kauto was beaten by Our Vic the year before. NTD should never have run IC in the race – asking for trouble. At Cheltenham the horse is a whole different proposition and hopefully the bookies have let him drift some!
As for What A Friend – bit too much hype I reckon! A horse could not have been handed 2 easier Grade 1’s! 12 to 1 for the Gold Cup is ludicrous! Carruthers shows that up – Second in this race after a very hard distant 4th in the GC 3 weeks earlier. What a friend is young but I really don’t see him as a Gold Cup winner.
April 9, 2010 at 12:33 #288865I backed What A Friend. I could not resist given his easy preparation and the stats against Imperial Commander.
I would suggest that the only possible motivation for running Imperial Commander at Aintree was greed.
The horse was never travelling and even Ruby Walsh said that he knew Imperial Commander wouldn’t be a threat after they’d gone a mile, commenting, as he did, on the Gold Cup winner’s poor jumping.
What A Friend is quirky character and it took all of Ruby’s brilliance to get him over the finishing line first. However, for all his faults, the horse is talented and whatever else, he’s a trier. Nicholls will hopefully iron out those quirks and I’m sure this is a horse on the up.
I also agree that Imperial Commander should not readily be dismissed and is an entirely different proposition round Cheltenham.
