This fresh angle is the only thing holding up his price, Kauto and Denman both lost because they made mistakes, Imperial Commander has to make mistakes if he is to be beaten and thats just a general chance you take with jumps racing, he should be odds on in this field given there looks not tactical issues it could be well worth taking a chance against the ‘fresh angle’ can’t believe their is odds against available today.
April 8, 2010 at 10:33 #288492Himself, I wouldn’t say What A Friend is value at all on a line through Denman with IC, he didn’t have to improve alot for his lexus win but he will have been laid out for this and promises to still be better than he’s shown. A hell of a lot to find though thought he would be 7/2 minimum, 4/1 in my book.
April 8, 2010 at 11:49 #288514At the prices, the two outsiders for me.
Calgary Bay and Carruthers E/W

"this is a horse racing forum"
Precisely!
Its purpose, supposedly ‘intelligent discussion about horseracing’, and not a school playground for the comparing the size of our fathers.
I agree entirely with Zarkarva.Like it or not though Reet, punting is part of this sport. You don’t have odds put up at the beginning of any other sporting occasion.
You, like the rest of us, have the majority of your posts describing who you are backing in a particular race and why. So why can’t these other people reminisce about past victories in the same way we reminisce about past performances of horses?
They are fully allowed to on a public (and unrestricted) forum.
Alas, let’s get back onto discussing the Totesport Bowl
April 8, 2010 at 12:33 #288531can people stop blowing their own trumpets?
Here here Zarkava, there"s nothing worse than a "Big Mouth" who cant back it up! Thankfully i dont fall into that category!
Anyone who thinks this "Bowl" is rubbish shouldn"t call themselves a fan of racing, this is a fascinating little contest and you could argue a case for all 5 runners!Calgary Bay
will carry my £10 today at 22"s!
April 8, 2010 at 13:22 #288541It’s quite possible that Nacarat and Carruthers will take each other on and the latter had a hard race at Cheltenham for a 7YO.
Imperial Commander has never won a top class race away from Prestbury Park and, as well documented, usually runs best when fresh.
Calgary Bay ran a cracker in the Gold Cup, paying the price late on for not settling during the early stages of that contest. Not sure this track will play to the strengths of this long striding giant and his three victories have all come on galloping tracks.
What A Friend comes here fresh after two solid efforts this season. I think this track will suit him more than most and he’s still open to improvement. He had some good horses behind when second in the Hennessy and likewise when winning the Lexus Chase, with Irish Hennessy hero, Joncol, in third.
What A Friend to beat Calgary Bay.

My money is on calgary bay each way. I hope Imperial comes back safe though and i’ll back him for next years gold cup if he loses.
April 8, 2010 at 14:08 #288552Has Carruthers got a chance? What a Friend is too short
April 8, 2010 at 14:17 #288555Stupid decision to run Imperial Commander.
Has just got rid of Paddy Brennan.
He shouldnt have run.
April 8, 2010 at 14:18 #288556Get-in!!
April 8, 2010 at 14:19 #288557Brilliant run by Carruthers!
April 8, 2010 at 14:26 #288562Wasn’t looking forward to this race; glad it’s over..glad they’re all ok. Wish Carruthers could have won, though.

Considering the in and out form of Imperial Commander and the poor record of Gold Cup winners at Aintree he must be THE one to oppose EWI hate to say I told you so but that’s covered my bet on Nina in The National!
I think time will prove this years was a very poor Gold Cup, Denman looked a shadow of his old self, Mon Mome finishing 3rd says it all, Kauto Star was never as good at Cheltenham as Kempton and his time, like Denman’s is in the past as far as Gold Cups go.
I’d confidently forecast that next years 1-2-3 will all be having their first crack at the race.April 8, 2010 at 16:31 #288595nicholls knows what hes doing, hes won his money today with what a friend. he should run kauto at punchestowns.
April 8, 2010 at 17:40 #288616Horses run well when they are well and trainers say things that are often no more than excuses when a horse runs badly. Punters latch on to a few words it spreads like wildfire and it becomes gospel.
Imperial Commander needs to be fresh falls into that category IMO.
The horse didn’t need to be fresh when he won 2 on the trot when he first hit the headlines and he blundered his way out of his next race at Cheltenham behind Joe Lively.
In 2 of his other runs he was well beaten by Kauto Star but what wasn’t? He went to Ireland in the hope the ground wouldn’t be too bad but it was run in a bog and half the field failed to finish.
I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t put this falacy to bed today and hack up in a race that can only be described as as a joke.
This is a horse who made Denman look like a tree yet. Considering he beat What a friend giving him lumps of weight in the Hennessy if Denman was running in this and not Imperial Commander he’d be 4/11 to beat this lot.
Some fancy Nacarat but I could find dozens of better 9/2 shots to be throwing my cash onto with a realistic chance of winning.
You’ll go along way to better the evens available about a Gold Cup winner taking on handicappers at level weights. Most of which you couldn’t trust as far as you could throw.
Time to get the shovel out the garden shed and start piling the cash onto what looks a nailed on certainty to me.
Imperial Commander 1/1
let me at ’em!Hmmm! I’m saying nothing!
What a Friend…….oh yes, What a Friend!
April 8, 2010 at 17:48 #288618Surely Carruthers coming a good second here puts paid to your ridiculous Poor Gold Cup idea after he finished 4th and a mile away from the first two, maybe you never thought it through properly.
