I caught altior drifting earlier, evs for the tingle creek and uds went into 3.5, 4 hours later he gets pulled from the race and uds is the already 11/4 fav
Why did it have to take 4 hours for that to come out 😆 the bookies had it priced accordingly at 4pm roughly, uds was 7 or 8 to 1 before 4…
Anyway, nothing for the race as of yet personally, just found this a tad “odd”
November 15, 2017 at 19:26 #1326861Gordon Bennett!
Henderson ‘hopefully he’ll be back for the Champion Chase’
sounds a bit touch and goGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
November 15, 2017 at 19:26 #1326862It’s almost like connections wanted to give the bookies a head start over punters!
November 15, 2017 at 19:30 #1326864Hasnt affected the champion chase market too much yet, but it will, as like nathan just said, it sounded more hopeful than definite he will be back for chelt, have took a few prices for that reason on the CC
November 16, 2017 at 00:25 #1326912How long do wind problems usually keep horses out for? Douvan 3/1 for Champion Chase. I would assume that the fact that he mightn’t go to the Champion Chase is factored into that price. Min 13/2 might be worth a punt..
November 16, 2017 at 00:32 #1326915Well he will be in his box for a month after surgery atleast then likely the same time to get him fit again, there is every chance he could miss the season at this point, nickys blog suggested that they would “hope” he will be back for march, wasnt a confidence booster if your an altior backer anyway
I swerved douvan and had a nibble on great field and min
Really is a shame if he misses the season though!
November 16, 2017 at 09:28 #1326932Yep, a great shame. If Douvan wins the Champion Chase and Altior doesn’t show can you imagine the build up to the 2019 Champ Chase? It would be 3 years in the making; assuming Douvan doesn’t step up.
As for the Tingle Creek it’s all eyes on Mullins now. He has UDS, Min, Douvan and Great Field. I’d say whoever gets the nod will be favourite; unless Fox Norton or Special Thiarra can put on a show this weekend.
November 16, 2017 at 11:41 #1326943Nicky said something like, “At least we won’t have to retire him”. Strange that they would even mention a word like that.
November 16, 2017 at 11:48 #1326944Something doesn’t really add up to me about this whole Altior business. As has been mentioned there does seem to be a dark tone to Nicky’s words which seems odd. Admittedly I’m no expert on the matter but does it not seem a bit exaggerated to question his festival participation over a ‘wind issue’ at this stage of the season? Going off past experiences these things tend to be ironed out fairly quickly. I could be wrong but something tells me there’s a bit more to it.
November 16, 2017 at 12:17 #1326952I think there are different levels of wind operations. Blaklion reportedly had one in the middle of last season and didn’t miss any racing for it, but a lot of them seemed to be saved for the summer like Clan Des Obeaux and Many Clouds.
I think the basic rule is 1 week of box rest will require roughly 1 month of work, so if he’s in his box for a month he’ll need four months work to get race-ready. That timeline, if correct, seems to automatically rule out Cheltenham and puts serious doubts on his racing at all this season. It wouldn’t surprise me if they were to write off this season and look to bring him back next year.
November 16, 2017 at 12:22 #1326954Hes better to be tentative about the situation, there is never a guarantee with surgery of any kind on an animal and there is always a chance one animal may take a different course than another when recovering, he could effectively be racing by the end of january, but if he puts doubt in his chances of turning up just now, then he gave plenty warning come the time
November 16, 2017 at 12:37 #1326961Read Geoffrey Riddle on twitter and you’ll see how shady the behavior of connections have been in relation to the Betting market
November 16, 2017 at 13:08 #1326963I seen the drift happening and i immediately seen betfair in particular crashing the uds price
there was an unfair advantage given to the bookies yesterday regarding the situation, he gave them a 3 hour headstart before punters where to know
How altior fares in the future is all in defending him on, hes being scarce in his opinion that he will make cheltenham
But the scenario yesterday was not good…
November 16, 2017 at 13:13 #1326965Sad news and Henderson, the ultimate pessimist (or is it realist after so long in the game) will only bring him back when he’s totally ready. Let’s hope he can work his Sprinter magic on him.
November 17, 2017 at 10:06 #1327046perhaps too short now, but Fox Norton looks absolutely nailed on for this now IMHO.
good record when going fresh and could still be improving on last years very successful campaign.
5/4 round robin with evens Finians Oscar today paying what i think is a generous 7/2
have also taken FN for the CC at 14/1 as those ahead of him in the market (namely Altior, Min and dovan) all having doubts about them.
November 17, 2017 at 10:48 #1327050Yes, “wind op” covers a range of procedures. AFAIK if they are just trimming or cauterising a soft palate the horse misses very little work. I expect Altior has had a tieback which need a lot more rest. Nicky is sensible to be circumspect about Cheltenham. If all goes swimmingly then great, but if the tieback breaks when the horse is back in work then you’re back to square one. Or if it inhales food through the fixed-open larynx at any stage post surgery and gets pneumonia then that means antibiotics and a load of time off.
I’m not surprised to hear that Might Bite and Sprinter had the surgery too. They are big horses, which are prone to laryngeal paralysis. Sprinter had his after the Supreme- if it had been possible to predict the summer before that his larynx would be starting to fail by the end of the season and done the op then, he might have won the Supreme!
November 17, 2017 at 11:33 #1327058Henderson needs to be much more straightforward when commenting on these things.
“And between our own vet Dave Matterson and Geoff Lane they both concluded that he has a small issue with his wind whereby his larynx isn’t opening sufficiently so after discussing the matter with his owners, Christopher and Pat Pugh, we decided that he will need a small procedure to rectify the problem.”
His talk is contradicted too often by his actions or by follow up comments. He talked about the whistling sound at first as though you could barely hear it. Then he mentions ‘small issues’ and ‘small procedures’ followed shortly afterwards by, ‘at least we don’t need to retire him’ and further speculative stuff about making it back this season. Who can guess now what level of op Altior needs? If it’s a tieback, I’m out. As greenasgrass says, tiebacks can break relatively easily – it’s happened at least twice with More of That.
Altior did not sparkle in the Arkle. It was a dull performance compared with his previous one and at the time I put it down to him having a harder race than it looked at Newbury. I wonder now if his wind was troubling him at Cheltenham.
Most disturbing of all from a punting viewpoint is that Henderson first suspected something on Saturday and did not make it public until Wednesday evening ON HIS BLOG for Unibet. Seriously? That article/blog now seems to have disappeared from the Unibet site.
The BHA are making threatening noises this morning and not before time.
