Well done winners. Backed him regularly last year, but with King talking of maybe moving him up in trip at the start of the season I wondered about the trainer’s confidence in him over 2 miles.

I suspect the bone damage stuff over Shishkin hasn’t played a huge part in his performance today or in March. The mighty Clarence House battle might well have bottomed him.

Regarding Shishkin, I’ve got the sneakng suspicion that his memorable clash with Energumene took something out of him. A brilliant but very hard race. If you go back to when Grundy defeated Bustino, the former was never the same horse again. I pretty much suspect that Shishkin is descending a similar path.

The bet was down anyways, with Edwardstone winning.

Shishkin met quite a lot fences wrong. He jumped the first three in the back straight very good, but he looked a bit slow over the water and was far from fluent over the first two of the three railway fences, then he jumped badly to his left over the Pond and could only hold of GDM for third. Nico also had to push him along at different stages. He lacked class and enthusiasm, but I think he clearly has an issue.

Agree that the Ascot race with Energumene has taken something from Shishkin.
He was flat out from a long way back and really had to sprout wings to win. A good idea to step up in trip but it will be interesting to see what he finds when push comes to shove.

Shiskin looks like he is looking after himself which sounds like he has something bothering him. Edwardstone was electric and as he’s in my ten to follow im over the moon. Will still need to improve to match energumane who I think still has loads more to offer.

Yes, but 2m4f or 2m5f would be his limit. No way, he’ll get the GC trip. He won’t settle, he’ll have too much company around him and things might be going too fast in such a huge field. Will be too early out of his comfort zone.

The Ryanair is worth a try….

    WD winners

Happy to see Edwardstone win for Alan King after such a brilliant campaign last year. Surely a real contender for the Champion Chase now.

Shishkin stepping up in trip is a logical thing to do, but I doubt he will ever deliver 170+ performances again. You cannot easily trash Edwardstone and Greaneteen over 2 miles and a year later be done for speed.

My only point would be that it was his first race since Cheltenham and that was off an injury enforced layoff so he was entitled to need the run so it seems a little knee jerky to immediately say it was the trip (he was being niggled at times yes but to say he was flat out seems overly simplistic), they might very well be right but I would at least give him one more try at the trip beforehand (Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton over Christmas being the obvious choice).

Frankly, I really don’t see him as a Gold Cup horse (although his siblings did win over 3m in Hunter Chases & PTP’s) but if they are looking at going down the 2m4f route well Allaho looms rather large in that division and I think he would be harder to beat than those he would face in the QMCC all things being equal.
