In France all punting losses( except the tax going to the Government) comes back in to the sport to the benefit of spectators, racing employees, retired and injured jockeys and stable staff etc etc. I prefer that system you apparantly do not. As an owner I race my horses there more and more because I find it more enjoyable and I get more bangs for my buck.
I have been promoting the French (or Australian) system of nationalised off-course bookmaking all my life. As you say, punting losses go into racing to benefit ALL groups, spectators, stable staff, injured jockeys etc, not just owners. I think what UK bookmakers pay into Racing is indeed pitiful I just hate it when owners forget that PUNTERS pay it and not bookmakers.

Actually Murphys original 17 days was reduced to 14, but was given an extra seven for a second offence. Gifford actually walked out £1,000 better off as his fine was reduced to £3,000 instead of the original £4,000.
In these situations the trainer should be punished more harshly as he is the one giving the instructions, the Jockey only doing what he is told, if he goes against the trainer/owners instructions he probably won’t ride for them again. In Timmmy Murphys case it wouldn’t matter too much as he has a pretty lucrative retainer, but for Journeymen jockeys who are struggling to make it pay, riding to orders is the only option available to them. Just to finish off, below are the comments Gifford said to the stewards on the day of the offence:
"Today was all about education, hands and heels, I said to Timmy, I don’t want this horse knocked about, its all about education today"
Comments like that would make every punter want to pack it in altogether (not easy, as we all know, we are hooked). In defence of the Jockey I can’t see what else he could have done, considering his instructions. Harsher penalties espiecially for trainers is the only way to try and stamp this carry on out for good.
"
November 16, 2007 at 17:09 #125090I dont see a problem with his instructions.

His real instructions probably would read like this,
"I have a nice h/cap in mind for this mare, she is showing me all the right vibes at home, keep her out the back and whatever you do don’t put her in the race, I don’t want the handicapper taken notice of her, and when the money is down Timmy, we will put you up and we will have a few quid on for you aswell.
As it turned out everyone noticed, hiding a horses ability is not that easy when they are running against poorer animals.
We had another example today of a horse getting an education or more to the point the horse simply wasn’t off, Benno’s Boy bumper at Newcastle, just so happened the 5/2 fav wins owned by Craig Bennett as is Benno’s Boy.November 17, 2007 at 08:13 #125163Madman Marz
Nick Giffords horse would have be kept to bumpers for the time being so no handicapper would be interested with that race. With regard to the bumper race at Newcastle Fri 16th Noble Allan by any reading of the jockey booking was the stables best hope and as Spotlight in the Post pointed out yesterday was given a ”quite a nice sort” quote in the recent stable tour by his normally reticent trainer.
Yes Craig Bennett owns both Noble Allan and Benno’s Boy but he paid 100,000 euros for Noble Allan who is a half brother to Full House yet Bennos Boy cost exactly half that sum.
Noble Allan looked a very decent horse by judging yesterdays result.
Dont let the facts spoil your story next time!

Sorry for my ignorance Seagull regarding Ashleys Petale, but no doubt the trainer had something planned for the future.
Getting back to the bumper at Newcastle, I agree that Noble Allan looks a decent recruit and Benno’s Boy would probably not have beaten him, but you have to admit James Reveley made little or no effort to chase after Noble Allan, should at least have been a clear second, the money was down on the winner so James Reveley had no intention of crashing the party.November 17, 2007 at 09:32 #125171I stress again there was nothing untoward in the bumper race yesterday.
The Howard Johnson horse looked decent and made every effort as did the other Nicky Richards horse which finished 3rd so the ew money was won.
With regards to the Findon trained runner at Fontwell there are some exellent stories regarding Gifford, Ryan Price, jilted owners Derby Winners etc etc on

http://www.findonvillage.com/ click on racing stablesActually Benno’s Boy was trained by Keith Reveley Gull, Noble Allan was ridden fairly aggressively right out to the line, not so BB.
Will click on link later as its time to study the RP for potential winners/ losers more like it lately. - AuthorPosts
