Ricky dear,Every horse race can have it’s own rules.Obviously if the race is based on a team result then it is a team race with horse .
August 11, 2012 at 10:48 #409497Ricky and Ginge – perhaps you would like to explain what the incentive is for a rider to ride team tactics to help "the team" as opposed ride for the best position for him/her self?
The prize structure is designed to reward the rider who performs best individually – there is no personal prize – apart from "bragging rights" for winning the team competition.
I personally don’t bet in the Shergar Cup but that has nothing to do with team tactics but more to do with the inability of many of the overseas riders to judge how to ride a race at Ascot.
Do you also think top owners and trainers would continue to support the meeting if their runners were being "sacrificed"?
Paul,
The incentive is indeed "bragging rights" and the will to win (the competition). When a jockey believes he/she has little chance of winning, then a decision may be (unofficially) made to help other team members win.The Shergar Cup has changed for the better, nowhere near the problem it used to be 10 years ago. Was it really 10 years ago? After Jasmick, Hughie Morrison threatened never to run one of his horses on the card again.

It is getting better, a lot better. Am sure it is not so blatant and is a fairer competition nowadays. Betting should not be the be all and end all, however, I just feel horse racing does not lend itself to a team competition. The Authorities have thankfully curtailed talk of "team tactics". I remember when it first started. Steve’s right, it did have an It’s A Knockout look, complete with "jokers". Maybe my slant on the Cup has too much to do with the past. As said Paul, not as negative as I once was. It’s possible in the future I might even find myself having a bet. Just not ready yet.

The authorities have made it quite clear teams are not allowed to ride as "teams".

August 11, 2012 at 14:50 #409526Someone should rethink the colours. It is impossible for the public to distinguish between the three team members. Difficult enough for racing enthusiasts.
Wouldn’t be too difficult to have pale, mid and dark caps in pink, green, blue and yellow.

Absolutely – it was nigh on impossible to differentiate the "hoop" and "stars" especially with the yellow team, even through bins.
It took me to race five before I was able to attune myself to the colours.
I tell you I felt like giving trainer Malcolm Saunders a big hug when he sent out Fanrouge with a magnificent red bridle in the last, as Clive Cox who put the biggest pair of cheekpieces I’ve seen in ages on Accession – both were fantastic identification aids.
Back to the other discussion on the cup – I didn’t seen anything resembling team tactics this afternoon – the only ride worthy of a "mention in despatches" was Haley’s on John Biscuit – which wasn’t the smartest ride of the afternoon
August 11, 2012 at 21:14 #409549Have they worked out how many people went to Ascot for the racing, and those for the after racing concert? I assume the latter figure will be much higher, but I’m sure racing’s PR department will call the event a rip-roaring success.
I also thought Channel 4’s presentation and production today was very poor. Their coverage is desperately in need of new blood.
August 11, 2012 at 21:47 #409550I thought the TV coverage was dire, the colours indistinguishable even to experienced callers and the series of whip bans to the foreigners an embarrassment:-
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Chantal Sutherland, the rider of ASTRAL THUNDER (ARG), placed seventh, from approaching the two furlong marker. Having heard her evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found her in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that she used her whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Sutherland for four days as follows: Saturday 25th, Sunday 26th, Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th August 2012.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Cristian Demuro, the rider of the winner, DESERT LAW (IRE), approaching the final furlong. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Demuro for four days as follows: Saturday 25th, Sunday 26th, Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th August 2012.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Yutaka Take, the rider of AHZEEMAH (IRE), placed second, approaching the two furlong marker. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Take for four days as follows: Saturday 25th, Sunday 26th, Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th August 2012.

August 11, 2012 at 22:56 #409558Your were not concerned with with Indians making friends when Richard Hughes was banned Andyod, they should not ride in this here country if they’s don’t know the rules.

The more I think about it, Clare Balding would be making a huge mistake to join Channel 4 Racing next year.
I hope she doesn’t do herself a disservice and join Channel 4’s racing coverage. I think she would regret it.
Clare has been widely praised for her excellent performances during the BBC’s Olympics coverage, apart from a bit of a controversy when her comments about the young Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen were taken as implying that the 16-year-old had been on performance-enhancing drugs.
It never ceases to amaze me how versatile and knowledgeable Clare is across so many sports.
She is due to be on Channel 4 for the Paralympics coverage but she should leave it at that (apart from Crufts on More4 again?) and stick with the many opportunities that will continue to come her way even when the BBC’s racing coverage ends.
Speaking of versatility, Rishi Persad and Sonali Shah were both listed as hosting separate Olympics programmes on BBC3 yesterday, Sonali at 9am until 2pm and Rishi at 2pm until 8pm.
You certainly can’t keep talented men and women down.
I’m sure Bachelors’ Hall was impressed. I read that Rishi has apparently been doing sterling work commentating on, er, kayaking….
August 12, 2012 at 09:59 #409582CrustyPatch,
Did you manage to catch any of John Hunt’s commentaries on the equestrian events at the Olympics on R5?
They seemed to receive widespread praise although personally I don’t know how he could bear to miss Glorious Goodwood
August 12, 2012 at 10:03 #409583Went to the shergar cup day once, didn’t like it, not been again. Plenty of other normal racing on yesterday.
What’s the problem? If you don’t like it don’t watch it.

When you think about it, there’s no real need to have team members in the same colours at all.
One team could have red, orange and pink for individual members, another yellow, white and light grey, another black, blue and purple etc.
Can’t really imagine it impinging on people’s enjoyment, in fact it would help because they would easily be able to identify individual riders.August 12, 2012 at 11:57 #409586A bit late in the day but I expect the colours to be amended for next year’s event.
Everywhere I read there is criticism of the colours clash but Ascot weren’t for budging. A classic case of those in authority thinking they know best, not willing to change, and crucially not listening to their customers.
Other than that I don’t have a problem with the event. Free entry for the horses, decent prize money, good sized but not impossible sized fields, well attended by the public – isn’t this what the sport should be aiming for?
A similar event in the North for the 5 nations would be a useful addition to the Racing Calendar for a course like Ayr.
August 12, 2012 at 13:05 #409590Come on Nathan, do I have to be consistent? Consistency belongs to the obsessive compulsive.Every case is different. These jockeys were invited to make the festival work, guests so to speak. It was supposed to be a fun affair.Hughesie rode in India for the winter, making a living.Different situation different rules.

I haven’t heard any of the radio coverage, Yeats, and haven’t actually watched that much of the TV coverage, to be honest.
I was reading only yesterday that John Hunt had been doing a good job on the equestrian events and I was reading some of the positive comments on his commentaries. He seems to have done a fine job, from what I can gather.
Good on him. Praise where praise is due.
I think he was at Glorious Goodwood for Frankel’s race, from what I read at the time, so I assume he must have done the radio commentary for that race before heading back to the Olympics. - AuthorPosts
