York 4:05
First Starter this bloke was so green didn’t know what it was about, but he will make a very good horse I think he was so impressive he may be group material. Revisit this next year and see if he is going around at Royal Ascot in a good race.
August 21, 2013 at 09:56 #449013Has been well supported for todays race.
Charles Darwin to conquer the World
August 21, 2013 at 14:18 #449029I just caught the tail-end of the race and it looked like The Grey Gatsby would have prevailed in another few strides. The race report says he was slightly outpaced. He’ll win more races though.
The Godolphin horse, First Flight was yet another 2yo who looked good first time out, was said to be "sure to improve", yet finished last of the six runners after going off 2nd favourite.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
August 21, 2013 at 15:51 #449044Aye…extract from my post on the Juddmonte thread:
I believe the Acomb runner-up was the best horse in the race, probably by some way. Give G Lee the chance to ride that again and I think he’d have put some pace in early on to even matters out. He was full of running come the finish.
August 21, 2013 at 22:12 #449092At about the 2 furlong pole he seemed to hit a bit of a flat spot or got a outpaced for a few strides. Finished the race well so either needs a faster run race or a step up in trip.
Charles Darwin to conquer the World
August 21, 2013 at 22:27 #449098I’d have to disagree with the general opinion – I think he was flattered by the margin at the finish and never for a second looked the winner of the race.
August 22, 2013 at 05:32 #449117Due to the conditions of the race, very good horses can get beaten by lesser ones through lack of experience. Grand Lodge and Istidaad spring to mind, think that was the case here.
That wily old fox Henry Candy knew this and has done very well to get a Group 3 with his horse. If I owned him I would be very tempted to sell now if the right offer came in.
Puzzled by the criticism of Lee, looked flat to the boards to me.
August 22, 2013 at 06:04 #449118When
The Grey Gatsby
ran at York on the 13th July, I had the going that day for the sprints at
+0.15s/f
(good) and
The Grey Gatsby
earned a speed figure of
66

Yesterday the going was super quick at
+0.42s/f
(good to firm with firm patches), the horses were kicking up dust on the bends,
The Grey Gatsby
earned a speed figure of
65

Looking at the knee action of
The Great Gatsby
, the going being on the quick side certainly didn’t suit him

Without any overnight rain at
York
, the going should be on the
firm
side today, I expect most of the races to run under standard

Turf going allowance table:
Firm +0.55s/f to +0.63s/f
Good/firm +0.20s/f to +0.53s/f
Good -0.25s/f to +0.18s/f
Good/soft -0.55s/f to -0.28s/f
Soft -1.00s/f to -0.58s/f
Heavy -1.58s/f to -1.03s/fAugust 22, 2013 at 10:34 #449136Due to the conditions of the race, very good horses can get beaten by lesser ones through lack of experience. Grand Lodge and Istidaad spring to mind, think that was the case here.

It was more a reflection than a criticism (I hate criticising jockeys). The steady early pace, I thought, allowed the others to get the run on him at a vital time. Lee was in a fine position early to push on, but he allowed Doyle to boss it.
Having said that, greenness contributed a fair bit to the defeat, so I’m probably being harsh. TGG hung away from the whip toward the centre, GL changed but it took too long to get the horse back on an even keel. He ended up on the rail, so covered a bit of extra ground as well. But he passed the post with plenty in the tank and I’ll be following him.
August 22, 2013 at 12:56 #449155Have been looking out for him to go around, due to work was busy so missed seeing him in.Didn’t see the race but I gather the pace was leisurely. This bloke will improve leaps and bounds after his first prep. I don’t think you will see the best of him until he comes back for his 2nd or 3rd prep, I wouldn’t be unloading him yet, I think he has a big future ahead.
August 22, 2013 at 13:20 #449160The Grey Gatsby was either still green or temperamental. With so much inexperience it’s very probable the former. I’d be surprised if the winner beats the second or third Il Papparazzi again; especially given the pace of yesterday’s race favouring the front runner/horse with experience. Placed horses could prove Group 3 or 2 winning Class, have my doubts about Group 1.
Value Is EverythingAugust 22, 2013 at 19:55 #449214The Grey Gatsby noted by Eyecathcher after his first run on her thread in Trends, Research and Notebook section – she’s been highlighting plenty future winners on that thread, well worth a look.
August 22, 2013 at 23:36 #449236Fast Flight is better than that.

September 12, 2013 at 23:13 #451048Obviously a step up in class, there looks to be a couple of promising horses in the race. He should race well, well suited if the pace is on which may be doubtful. Looks the sort of horse that will improve out of sight after a prep or two, though think he is good enough to go close in this.
September 14, 2013 at 09:54 #451205Only 4 runners left in it after the scratchings, looks a match between Outstrip and TGG, I think TGG will show his class and get the money.
