Australia raced six wide on both turns, no wonder he was paddling. And, in a field of seven runners too, horrible horrible ride. He could easily have got cover behind Al Kazeem, this ride was truly beyond the comprehensible. It’s as if Joseph was doing everything he could to get the horse beaten ffs. I wonder how much more ground Australia covered compared to the winner, and considering the tiny margin he got beaten by, I feel very safe in saying the best horse lost today and that the Juddmonte International provides the truer picture of the two horses’ abilities. I do like TGG as a horse but today’s result had far far more to do with the immense gulf in horsemanship between Moore and Joseph.
September 13, 2014 at 21:25 #490207The longer you live, the more your poor judgement is ruthlessly exposed…TGG joins The Fugue and Kingston Hill in my modern day list of those I always back when they lose, and never when they win.
I really need to commit to these cliff horses…you can’t have half a cliff horse…this I now know, and admit.
September 13, 2014 at 22:14 #490212Maybe young Joseph got confused and thought that he was riding in the Champion Chase. I’ve certainly never seen a horse travel two miles in a ten furlong race before.
September 13, 2014 at 22:17 #490213I backed TGG at York ante-post as not a fan of Australia, but what a ride by Ryan Moore on him today, absolutely perfect.
He was running away with it at the line but what was Joseph doing on Australia? Irrespective of being the ‘greatest we’ve ever had’ you cannot show such blatant disrespect to the field as he did today. Going three-wide throughout whilst Moore scraped paint up the inside? Very, very poor.

You can ride like that if you are aboard Frankel. Whilst Australia is a very, very good horse he is not a horse of a lifetime and you cannot afford to do what O’Brien did today. The difference between Moore and O’Brien is immense and Moore is why The Grey Gatsby won today.
Ryan Moore the best jockey since Lester Piggott certainly.
September 14, 2014 at 06:16 #490222Since Ballydoyle have so much money why do they not hire a jockey? Does Joseph realize how much money he is costing everyone? His old man included. If he was as sharp as we are led to believe he would resign.
September 14, 2014 at 08:48 #490227The ride Joseph gave
Australia
was the stuff of nightmares, going 10 wide on the turns in a 7 runner race

Maybe that’s why they don’t. A trade off, less good results but your son riding for you as against better results but your son not riding.
As they are multi millionaires maybe they prefer the first option and that’s fine by me.
I suppose eventually it’s all up to owners and whether they decide to put their foot down on the issue.
September 14, 2014 at 10:57 #490239Having watched the race a few more times, I think the criticism of JOB is a little too extreme. A better jockey might have found another way to give the horse a chance, but Australia was being a real mule throughout the race.
Watch Australia as the pace begins to quicken and he is asked to improve. He hangs in behind Al Kazeem and doesn’t look keen to go around him. When Australia hits the front, he puts his head on one side and looks rather unwilling for 10 strides or so, continuing to hang badly left.
I think the horse’s temperament was a big factor here. The odds on him being kept in training at 4 just skyrocketed.
September 14, 2014 at 11:13 #490241Very much agree with what The Young Fella has just posted.
Australia has looked more workmanlike than impressive in his performances this season and he hasn’t been the superstar what AOB has made him out to be.
September 14, 2014 at 13:19 #490248Regardless of all other considerations I was impressed with The Grey Gatsby. He stuck his head down when asked and ran on in "sod you, you won’t beat me" fashion.
Australia was wide on the bends, but then The Grey Gatsby was well off the pace even approaching the straight.September 26, 2014 at 08:36 #490889Totally concur that this horse needs a trip. As another poster pointed out, he stayed on to hold the 3rd horse.
He really is going to abe a very useful tool over middle distances.
I reckon there is at least group 2/3’s to be won with him and he may end up winning the St Leger.
Lovely stamp of a beast and next year he’s one to back when going 10 furlongs plus.
Zip
By a miler, out of a sprinter who’s by another miler Zip. TGG will (imo) do better at a mile, might and only might (allowing for temperament) get 10f next year. But I’ll give up racing if he proves a "Leger" horse Zip.

Too good for a leger, would of won it easy……

Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
