it is hot here in Sacramento tonight and fires are burning down the coast in Santa Barbara/Big Sur area and celebrating the unending success of Aidan I misspelt his name in the last entry. But he seems to think that MN will go on to better things.Sometimes we fail to listen to Aidan and miss important stuff which he is telling us.MN is still a baby to Aidan so he expects him to grow up from these races.
Do you know him?
July 6, 2008 at 16:54 #171996All I know is what I read in the newspapers.
July 6, 2008 at 20:21 #172015Was i at another course yesterday?
This "he will not be beaten again" and "great group one" stuff
A bunch of ex handicappers and group three horses finished in a heap FFS. I know this can happen at Sandown more than most arenas…but really
Ok. Admirable horses in the field, but this was nothing special
Very exciting race though. And great atmosphere and crowd
July 6, 2008 at 21:02 #172017The handicappers remain handicappers. The Group One horse is still the only Group One in the field, and now a winner of the Corals Eclipse,to add to his laurels.(I believe Aidan once owned the sire, so that could be the reason he persevered and probably will persevere with this horse.)
July 6, 2008 at 21:22 #172021Not a fantastic renewal, but a great race.
Only four lengths may have covered the first seven home, but you would expect Mount Nelson to improve. He has obviously overcome his problems and maybe wasn’t enjoying the ground (he had previously only won on good to soft and heavy going) so you’d expect to go from strength to strength.
The form of Phoenix Tower and Pipedreamer continues to hold up (PT has beaten John Gosden’s horse on every occasion this term), but you have to believe that this only proves what a good horse Duke Of Marmalade is.
Phoenix Tower was only mugged on the line by Mount Nelson yesterday, but was slammed by DOM at Royal Ascot.
With DOM and Macarther set for the King George, Henrythenavigator and Haradasun possibles for the Sussex, you have to think that Mount Nelson will be hard to beat in either the Juddmonte or Irish Champion, depending how Aiden juggles his horses.
July 6, 2008 at 21:55 #172025I suggest that Mount Nelson is a very good candidate for the Arlington Million, a race AOB seems to target with his next-best older horses.
July 6, 2008 at 21:55 #172026I backed Pipedreamer too,
But the horse is always held up, the ride was o.k.
As the race was run did the right thing by holding it up. The one slight thing wrong (imo) was he did not go for everything until too late. Would not have won anyway but might have been closer.
Reet has a point, it was as if JF was not certain he’d get the trip.
mark
Fair enough – but I think he has now proven he gets the trip, so perhaps he needs to be given more of a chance to gallop on earlier. It wouldn’t do any harm to try – unless they think it will bugger up his blistering turn of foot… *cough*
Reet,
Can’t disagree with ya comments – guess we’ll have to see if new tactics are employed in latter races.
Zip
July 6, 2008 at 22:54 #172034I believe that Haradasun isn on his way back to Australia.

Sad news if it’s true.
July 7, 2008 at 10:52 #172075Very exciting finish but proved this was not the greatest renewal. As for Mount Nelson this is the second comparatively weak GR1 he has won and you can’t help feeling he is unlikely to prove up to sterner opposition at this level.

You may be right, brigadier, but last year Mount Nelson (before injury) and Duke of Marmalade were AOB’s main Guineas hopes following the retirement of Holy Roman Emperor. At that time Fallon had said that MN was his Derby horse, which suggests that the stable had considered him at least the equal of DOM.
Hope the firmish ground he’s been racing on hasn’t hurt his previously damaged hoof. Pardon my ignorance, but how do they treat a hoof that has been partially pulled off as AOB reported re MN?

On the form line with PT he is quite a bit behind DOM and I don’t think the stable would hold that view now. He isn’t bred to get 12f so not sure why Fallon thought of him as his Derby horse. Can’t say I know how to treat such an injured hoof but maybe there is a vet on here who knows but AFAIK he came out of the race sound which is good news.
July 7, 2008 at 16:50 #172117Maybe Coolmore should send their vet over to look at Big Brown’s foot.
July 7, 2008 at 18:44 #172140The eclipse was terrible IMO in terms of quality but am hoping that this will provide some good prices later on. The Racing Post seem to have the older 1m2f horses way too high in the ratings and the 3yos should wipe the floor with them later in the season.
After seeing the cray ratings for the POW last month thought I would just have a look at the ratings for the eclipse and they have went 123 about mount nelson, Campanologist has apparently improved 9lbs in trip for the step back in trip to 119.
There are some far better 3yo horses than campanologist about, this lot are going to take an absolute pounding when they meet up.
New Approach would still look to be the best potential 1m2f horse around with Famous Name probably in second.
According to the ratings the older horses have a serious chance but I dont buy it for a second.
July 7, 2008 at 18:45 #172142Great idea, andy!
July 8, 2008 at 14:03 #172271Famous Name got a clear shot at the Irish derby and was well and truly beaten by the winner. So how can he be rated as the second best or even the third best of the rest? Frozen Fire must be rated as at least second best on that running.Possibly Alessandro Volta is the second best. We will know better next time he runs.( both Stouty and Bolger must now admit that the derby run did nothing good for their horses !)
July 8, 2008 at 14:24 #172282Although this was certinaly not a classy group one at all, taking Sandown form too literally can be dangerous. Not unusual to see horses finish in a bit of a heap here
