Absolute dross: in a truly run race 7 of the 8 horses finish within 3.5l, which means they’re all good horses or they’re not. I know where my money would be.
Pity Henry’s couldn’t hold on for another couple of strides though.

We knew before the off that this wasn’t a vintage Eclipse quality wise though.
July 5, 2008 at 18:59 #171882Stotsfold rated 117 by Raceform beaten 3 lengths today in a truly run race. Thats a 122 for the winner and I’d give Mount Nelson another 1lb considering he came down the slower centre of the straight. So a 123, well up to normal Group 1 standard for the age group. He’s not a Henry or a Duke but a performance of merit nonetheless.
If its not the pacemakers, its the rough-house jockeys, if its not the rough-house jockeys its the opposition. Keep it up boys and girls, your creating some great value for those prepared to take an objective view of the form book.
July 5, 2008 at 19:09 #171883Cav, I can’t have Mount Nelson running to 123. More likely around 119 and I don’t know where Raceform get 117 for Stotsfold either.
July 5, 2008 at 19:14 #171884Fair enough Ian, its all about opinions. FWIW I use Raceform a lot for Listed races up and I find them a very good guide to the general ability of a racehorse. They get it wrong sometimes, don’t we all.

We’ll forget that thread about Sagara at Goodwood then shall we?

Well I would if you’d let me.
July 5, 2008 at 20:44 #171903The only Group One horse in the race won.It takes a Group One horse to beat a Group One horse.Keep it in mind.
Sorry, were you talking at me?
Did you mean the only [previous] Group One winner in the race, won?
Can you explain what you mean by “It takes a Group One horse to beat a Group One horse.Keep it in mind”? I’m a little lost this evening!
July 5, 2008 at 21:56 #171911Hi All,
I had a tenner EW on Pipedreamer and thought the ride was average.
This horse does not have a serious turn of foot – I really think he needs to be nearer the pace and then kicked on.
Annoying thing was – he broke well and was then reigned back to well off the pace, 2nd last.
Still, I’m a corpulent idiot; what do I know about riding a Gee Gee?

Just my opinion, but his connections probably viewed the Eclipse trip at the very top end of Pipedreamer’s effective range at this level?
J Gosden said after his POW 3rd (Where he was caught by Phoenix Tower in the dying strides) :
“I was absolutely thrilled with that. The winner is clearly the best, but it was a great run nonetheless. We can stay in Group 1s but there will be nice Group 2s and 3s over a mile or a mile and one, so we’ll play it by ear” .
It was also notable that he was accompanied in the rear, off a strong pace, by another whose trainer had expressed doubts about his horse’s stamina, the winner Mount Nelson.
Maybe it wasn’t such a bad ride after all?July 6, 2008 at 01:48 #171917I backed Pipedreamer too,
But the horse is always held up, the ride was o.k.
As the race was run did the right thing by holding it up. The one slight thing wrong (imo) was he did not go for everything until too late. Would not have won anyway but might have been closer.
Reet has a point, it was as if JF was not certain he’d get the trip.

Value Is EverythingJuly 6, 2008 at 01:57 #171919Wow – talk about talents!
First I read about Queally’s ride on Multidimensional, and all of a sudden it became Pipedreamer. Not bad!
Tom Queally surely is not a proven Pattern class jockey – so you need to give some leeway there.
And the same goes for Pipedreamer being a Group 1 horse. Even weak Group 1s I couldn’t fathom him sneaking off with one! Races like the Celebration Mile would be up his alley.
July 6, 2008 at 02:07 #171920I believe that Group One horses are special. That it takes a special horse to win a Group One race. And a special horse to beat a Group One horse. That normally a Group One winner will not be beaten by a run of the mill horse. Group One races are set up to be won by good horses. That is what I believe. Maybe it is obvious but today’s Eclipse bears it out. The second horse is good ,very good. But the winner has won a Group One and the second has yet to do so, i believe.
July 6, 2008 at 03:12 #171923I think the form of this race will stand up and the winner will prove to be very tough to beat over 10f imo. Time will tell.
July 6, 2008 at 04:31 #171925"He has been progressing all of the time and you will see more improvement from him" I quote.
July 6, 2008 at 06:27 #171927it is hot here in Sacramento tonight and fires are burning down the coast in Santa Barbara/Big Sur area and celebrating the unending success of Aidan I misspelt his name in the last entry. But he seems to think that MN will go on to better things.Sometimes we fail to listen to Aidan and miss important stuff which he is telling us.MN is still a baby to Aidan so he expects him to grow up from these races.
