November 24, 2025 at 07:25 #1745503Thank you Steeplechasing.
I’m keeping it fairly simple as some had said to me that a points based system would be too complicated. So the points are gained as follows and only for wins (I don’t see why placed horses should be taken into account in the trainers title);
Class 6 – 1 point
Class 5 – 2 points
Class 4 – 3 points
Class 3 – 4 points
Class 2 – 5 points
Class 1 (Listed) – 6 points
Class 1 (Premier Handicap) – 7 points
Class 1 (Grade 2) – 8 points
Class 1 (Grade 1) – 9 pointsI might tweak the amount of points when the season comes to an end to see how that might have worked.
As I’ve mentioned before I feel that if you win a certain class of race it should carry the same weight as the next one but this doesn’t happen with prize money where different courses offer varying prize money for winning the same class of race.
November 24, 2025 at 10:57 #1745506Very interesting, thanks. If the objective is measuring a trainer’s merit – fittening, keeping them sound, and entering in the ‘right’ races, is there an argument that all classes of races should be treated the same? Or maybe look at some kind of A/E based on opportunities V candidates. EG, if there were, say, 30 Grade 1 races a season and 100 horses capable on ratings of winning one or more of those, how would that achievement be measured against say 3000 class 6 races per season with 5,000 horses capable of winning one or more? Maths and stats are far from my strong point, but do you get my drift?
Winning races with a yardful of very average horses might in reality be a more laudable feat than the likes of Mullins winning Graded races with a yardful of graded horses.
November 24, 2025 at 15:51 #1745519I do but I was conscious of trying to keep it as simple as possible. I didn’t want to move into Duckworth/Lewis territory which to this day I still have no idea how that works?!!
I never liked the trainers title being based purely on winners after what occurred with Pipe & Nicholls and the prize money system which rewards beaten horses entered en masse and didn’t properly reflect the season as a whole.
November 25, 2025 at 12:01 #1745559It’s always going to be a numbers game no matter what way you slice it. There was a good interview with Paul Nicholls on Nick Luck’s show a few weeks ago. He said he has 125 horses in training, which is not enough to win the trainers championship. I think you need over 200. The only ones who could feasibly win it in the next few years are Skelton, Olly Murphy, maybe, if he gets a good few more grade 1 horses, and Mullins. That’s it.
November 30, 2025 at 18:02 #1746286The final table for November;
1st Skelton 132 pts
2nd Snowden 76 pts
3rd= Pauling 73 pts
3rd= Tizzard 73 pts
5th= Murphy 66 pts
5th= Nicholls 66 pts
7th Henderson 58 pts
8th Derham 55 pts
9th Parkinson & Smith 43 pts
10th Gordon 39 ptsThe overall leaderboard for the season is as follows;
1st Skelton 297 pts (78 wins)
2nd Murphy 227 pts (69 wins)
3rd Owen 185 pts (67 wins)
4th Snowden 181 pts (53 wins)
5th Nicholls 163 pts (42 wins)
6th Bowen 144 pts (45 wins)
7th O’Brien 130 pts (43 wins)
8th Pauling 124 pts (38 wins)
9th N & W Twiston-Davies 110 pts (35 wins)
10th Henderson 104 pts (28 wins)1639 races and 243 different winning trainers.
Top Irish trainer is Elliott with 48 pts (12 wins) in 27th place.
November 30, 2025 at 18:05 #1746287It’s interesting that the table roughly correlates in terms of points and winners. It’s the valuable races in the spring that will really affect the standings.
November 30, 2025 at 18:43 #1746292So far it has. Skelton averages 3.81 points per win. Owen just 2.67 per win as he picked off the early season Class 4 & 5 races.
Henderson in 10th place averages 3.71 per win so not far behind Skelton when it comes to class of winner.
Nicholls averages 3.88 so is outdoing both of them.
