False alarm, just got off the phone to Jim Bolger. Turns out Teofilio likes to listen to music in his stable, mostly 70s and 80s – The Clash, Adam Ant, Ian Dury & The Blockheads, Blondie etc. Turns out he also has a new stable lad, Middle Eastern fella, good grafter but got the CDs mixed up and played the Spice Girls at full volume. Teofilio went mental, bucking and kicking – "Teofilio! Haz fatt!" shouted the new stable lad, (Haz Fatt obviously meaning "calm down" in his native tongue"). He then offered him an alternative music choice "Ian Dury?". Hence the full sentence – "Teofilio haz fatt Ian Dury" which, said quickly, sounds like "Teofilio has foot injury". Obviously, with all big stables bugged by unscrupulous bookmakers (are there any other sort) this Chinese whisper spread like wildfire. Fill your boots at the current 9-2.

April 16, 2007 at 20:50 #52433You have too much time on your hands Mounty.
April 16, 2007 at 22:21 #52435Hope it’s speculation, first and foremost because I’d like to see the next potential equine superstar on the track this season, and secondly, because I took the gamble on Betfair and invested in him at 5.3/1 only to find out later (11.15pm) that he’s back into 3.3/1. If he shows up, 5.3/1 will be a good price on the day….(maybe)
April 16, 2007 at 22:31 #52437Gotta agree with DJ, poor show from Teo camp, but thats AP betting for yer
April 16, 2007 at 22:38 #52438
For god’s sake, is it too hard for Bolger to take 2 mins to ring the Press Association to confirm what the situation is either way.
He was reported to be fine @ 1pm today so somehow he has picked up this ‘injury’ between then & about 3pm.
And why hasn’t a racing journo rang the stable? Maybe the RP are holding out for a front-page exclusive tomorrow… After all, when Finscheal Beo was pulled out of the Oaks he did say that no one asked if she was going to run so he kept quiet!
April 16, 2007 at 23:15 #52441its entirely possible something very minor has happend and Bolger is not saying anything because its so minor or possibly because they are waiting for some definite situation to develop.

April 16, 2007 at 23:23 #52442If something has happened, I think he should have said something by now.
If nothing has happened, I don’t think he should be expected to comment every time the Betfair market starts to fluctuate – particularly if he’d confirmed the horses’s wellbeing to the press that same afternoon.
April 16, 2007 at 23:46 #52444Oh, the heady days of the exchanges.
In the distant past we would have had no change at all from the bookies who would have happily kept taking bets on horses with no chance at short prices. Now, thanks to the exchanges, a horse sneezing can get some market movements.
However the market reaction to "injuries" can equally be too volatile. I know people view the Kicking King injury as possibly a sham, but if you read back through various trainers biographies some form of injury or scare seems to happen with some kind of regularity. I’m off to bed in a few mins otherwise I would look back as to who it was, but Vincent O’Brien certainly had a Derby winner who had a scare in the days running up to the Derby but decided not to tell people. The beast still won.
Perhaps in these days of exchanges, people are too keen to try and lay for free money when summat happens to make them think a horse might not run.
How times change…
I think you’ll find it was Golden Fleece back in 1982. He coughed a couple of days before the race but the O’Brien team didn’t make it public, Golden Fleece won then came down with an illness and never ran again.
Interestingly Pat Eddery in his autobiography reckons that Golden Fleece was probably the best horse he ever rode while Lester piggott reckoned he was probably the best of O’Brien’s derby winners.
It’s a shame he was never able to prove how good he really was.
When Eddery rates Golden Fleece ahead of the likes of El Gran Senor and Dancing Brave he must’ve had an immense amount of talent.
April 17, 2007 at 09:21 #52447Bolger’s made a statement:
"Teofilo has had a training set back. When trotted yesterday afternoon he showed slight discomfort.
As a result his training will be restricted to walking and swimming for one week. Otherwise he is fit and well and on target for his 2000 Guineas tilt on May 5th.
A further statement on his condition will be issued early next week."
April 17, 2007 at 10:18 #52448How heart breaking it would be if he doesn’t line up in the 2000 guineas. Had the pleasure of being present at the Curragh for both his G2 futurity stakes and G1 national stakes wins. Prior to the national stakes I thought Holy Roman Emperor was going to be unbeatable but Teofilo was so impressive that day, I became a fan. I made the trip to Newmarket for the last two days of the Champions meeting. Hanging over the rail at the parade ring before the dewhurst as he passed us my wife and I turned to each other and just said "WOW". The horse has such amazing presence. There were top class beasts on display that day, not to mention $9.7 Jalil from the previous day, but none were more impressive looking. Surely all racing fans crave a superstar. I really hope we haven’t seen the last of him. I know it’s reported as a "slight training setback" but I’m involved in a horse myself (Karakorum Highway) who had a similar "setback" early last week, turns out he’s out for 15 months now.
Anyway lets keep our fingers crossed for THE MONSTER.

Once raced Danzig colt owned by Michael Tabor and trained in France by J C Rouget.
Winner of a 7f listed race on good going at Maisons Laffite in April
April 17, 2007 at 11:09 #52452He’s actually run 4 times – 3 wins last year on regional tracks (hence they’re not in the RP database yet) and the Prix Djebel the other week.
April 17, 2007 at 11:10 #52453Cheers Chaps. Tabor is a sneaky b*gger isn’t he!!!
April 17, 2007 at 11:14 #52454This is him:
April 17, 2007 at 12:21 #52455I posted this in the ‘Peace Dream’ thread a few days ago…
’Have just seen US Ranger win the the Prix Djebel at Maisons Laffitte. Very impressive in pulling about 5 lengths clear of listed winner Prior Warning. If this horse comes over to Newmarket, he looks like the one Teofilo backers should fear. He isn;t actually entered for the 2000 though connections have made noises about supplementing him. He’s half owned by Michael Tabor.’
