Hard to be confident but I have persisted with River Wylde for reasons previously stated (including that he had genuine excuses on previous course run) and rate Ballyandy as the danger, his was a smoother performance last time and I would not be worried re stableform.
March 14, 2017 at 14:06 #1291898Well done to those who had Labaik, I didn’t feel he could win it but he did the business.
To me River Wylde didn’t get up the hill. Splattering the final flight didn’t help but he seemed to be running out of petrol anyway.
I feel the commentary team made an awful lot of Ballyandy being unlucky. To my eyes he was never really travelling like a winner and problems often come when your mount is not going as well as you would like. He was never really hampered much and the incident where the jockey went up his neck never really cost them any ground. He was still unable to catch the tiring River Wylde after his howler at the last and it might be a mistake to class Ballyandy as that unlucky today.
The race was run 7.2 seconds slower than Altior last year.
My two lays were beaten so I’ll settle for that.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 14, 2017 at 14:22 #1291901I have to be honest, I didn’t see that coming, but very well done to those
that had faith in him…..and well rewarded for itMarch 14, 2017 at 14:40 #1291907Sick… melons gets beat by a horse that doesn’t even normally show up… will my luck ever turn?
March 14, 2017 at 14:42 #1291909Don’t think the pace of the race suited River Wylde, would’ve been closer without momentum stopping mistake at the last too. Ballyandy too would’ve done better with more pace and withouut all the trouble in running. As they said on TV, unlucky not to be placed. May be stable form meant he was below his best too. Bunk Off Early was unsettled at start, didn’t settle and met with inteference. All that said, first two travelled through the race better than anything else and they would’ve held those two places whatever the pace or inteference.
Well done those who backed the squiggle horse.
Value Is EverythingMarch 14, 2017 at 14:45 #1291911To me River Wylde didn’t get up the hill. Splattering the final flight didn’t help but he seemed to be running out of petrol anyway.
I backed him also Steve and with the strong hold he took and almost being restrained at quite a few hurdles that he took with head to one side i think he ran a blinder, if this horse can settle then he will be a really top notcher.

I didn’t back River Wylde, I was worried about the hill. He led briefly turning in but was booked for third at best I feel as the others finished more strongly.
I don’t buy into horses not settling as an excuse for being out with the washing but each to their own. That Deloitte Hurdle over 2F further on gutters was somewhat removed from today’s requirements and Bunk Off Early was way skinny for me at 6/1 today.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 14, 2017 at 15:16 #1291917Brain power looks extremely good in the paddock… given my recent run Yanworth can’t possibly win… I would back this Brain Power if I had my life over.
March 14, 2017 at 15:16 #1291918Oops sorry wrong thread
I really am losing it
March 14, 2017 at 18:43 #1292019Worth remembering that you can have up to £20 on with Skybet here and get it back as a free bet if it loses
Was going to sit this one out Joe, as I intend to do with a few of them, but might just take advantage of this offer for Labaik
Hope you did VTC.
Hard for us who take a certain approach to back either the first or second as for one reason or another they had scant recent rateable form, take them out and had it right!
March 14, 2017 at 19:13 #1292034I certainly hope you followed your own words Bobby!!
March 14, 2017 at 19:37 #1292040So do I; not only did we cheer Labaik back into the winners enclosure but we were stood next to Jack Kennedy’s mum who was even more of a nervous wreck than I was! Got some nice photos of him if I can work out how to put them up. The first person we spoke to at the track had also backed him and had mistakenly backed him for £10 and not £1 which he’d intended. So him, me and Jack’s mum were probably the only people cheering! Beautiful horse; got some nice photos of him if I can work out how to put them on here.
March 14, 2017 at 20:02 #1292053Great start for Bobby.
I was watching Labaik on Betfair having seen the J Codd preview where he said the horse was a machine. He was 42 when the tapes went up then dropped in half a second to 14s so I didn’t bother. But he looked easily the best of that lot and somebody tweeted a post-race note that Betvictor were going 33 for the Champion Hurdle.
Unfortunately I could find that nowhere on their site and I suspect he’s a third of that now.
March 14, 2017 at 21:30 #1292079One for the good guys here, with the almost unbackable Labaik punishing the Melon guessers and wannabe shrewdies (myself included).
To be fair to Melon‘s backers, this did at least hit home the fact that Ruby rarely makes the wrong choice between Mullins horses in championship races. He has chosen wrong in a few Irish G1 novices, but can you think of a time he has made the wrong choice at Cheltenham apart from Denman/Kauto Star?
This doesn’t appeal as a race that will provide many Champion Hurdle pointers for next year. Perhaps the ferry ride and big race atmosphere inspired Labaik to take part, but a clever cookie like him is unlikely to fall for it many more times. He’s just a poundshop Hors La Loi III. I’m not a fan of ‘goodwill’ gestures from bookmakers with notorious refuseniks like Labaik. He has a history of it, you know what to expect and it’s factored into his price. Don’t start whining expecting a refund when he plants himself. Bookies who do cave to that sort of pressure have created the current breed of overly entitled punters.
Surprisingly for the least experienced hurdler in the field, Melon actually shaped like one of the most streetwise. He travelled well without doing too much, was perfectly placed throughout and jumped accurately. He just lacked Labaik’s gears. Again, against what you’d expect for a twice-raced hurdler, there isn’t much obvious scope for improvement for him at two miles. At least he has great scope for chasing and looks sure to stay further.
River Wylde also reached his limit, doing most things right but just finding himself outclassed and outstayed in the end. He’s not such an obvious chasing type but should pay his way in the conditions hurdles, especially around the sharper tracks.
In an eery prelude to stablemate The New One’s Champion Hurdle effort, Ballyandy was ironed out as a non-elite two miler. The emphasis on speed didn’t suit him and I doubt he’ll be seen at a sharp two miles again. On the plus side, he has a good attitude, responds well to pressure and should be one of the top 2m 4f-3m novice chasers next term.
Of those further back, I think Bunk Off Early disgraced himself (not for the first time) by downing tools under pressure. Anyone who knew his quirks on the flat would have known not to be sucked in by his Deloitte run. Crack Mome only beat one home in the end, but ruined his chance by pulling fiercely for the first mile. He is surely much better than this and might be a candidate for a hood.
March 15, 2017 at 00:51 #1292152Cheers guys, took the 40’s this morning, and just an unbelievable start, set me up nicely, and pressure was off after that.
Many thanks to Joe, who posted that Skybet offer, it took a wee bit of the risk out, and he won it well. Not often you start off with a 40-1 shot, but it’s a feeling I could get used to.

are you a professional bobby, you seem to do pretty well?
and is it rude to ask how much you actually put on these horses?
March 15, 2017 at 13:13 #1292276Thanks for that reply Bobby.
Another question I would ask is how do you go about studying form?
The one thing I’ve noticed is that you seem to cover every runner, which is one thing as a lazier punter I seem to be pretty rubbish at.
I mean I wouldn’t even have looked at that Gordon Eliot horse in the first yesterday, and that’s a big weakness as a punter.
One of the reasons I asked whether you were a professional was you seem to go into these races in a lot of detail, I just wondered how you found the time to juggle with a full-time job, although again that’s quite rude I suppose. And if you’re successful why not go pro?
