…and whilst I’m in whinging mode this afternoon, that “Sugar Baron” with all its conatations of the West Indian slave trade, is poorly named animal indeed.
I’d imagine a few of our Caribbean punting friends will be having a quiet wince this afternoon.
December 9, 2017 at 15:52 #1331284Does Top Othe Ra’s name mean what I think it means? Pretty surprised that one got through.

I rather doubt that it even crossed their minds, other than the infinitesimally small number of that cohort who are Guardian readers obsessed with Identity Politics
Should Baron Sugar, of ‘You’re Fired’ fame be fired?

Might be crediting the owner with too much imagination but I like to think the name Sugar Baron, being by Presenting ex Shuil Oilean (Trans. Hope Island) ex Be My Native. is damn clever, and rather nice
December 9, 2017 at 18:37 #1331315“Two in the pink” is another dodgy one

LOL
December 9, 2017 at 22:49 #1331371Wouldn’t necessarily make the link between Baron as in peerage and Sugar as in surname, with “Sugar Baron” as in West Indian slave owner, Drone.
Identity politics leaves me cold, I’m sooooo glad Clinton ended up flogging a book on The One Show.

I’m not clever enough to work out “Sugar Baron” from the bloodline, and whilst the owner most probably means no harm at all, its an unfortunate name all the same imo.
If he calls the next one “Red Leg” then I’ll know I’m on to something.

Trying to fathom the source of an unusual name from the bloodline is a game I enjoy; though such is my determination to deduce it, it’s more-often-than-not a confirmation-biased clutching at bagasse straws
A quick rummage through the RP database reveals horses named Red Shanks and Red Neck. Like Red Leg, the pejorative versions are condensed into one word: Redshanks, Redneck, Redleg
So that’s okay then

December 10, 2017 at 13:22 #1331462Oh right. Hope Island, Queensland, dished out as a prize to some colonial chap in the sugar industry.
Can’t work out where Presenting or Be My Native come into it (unless the aboriginal people were Presented with the choice of essentially belonging to the big sugarcane estates and getting to work, or told to bugger off the land). How sweet.

The importing of African slaves – Be My Native
The European colonisation of the Caribbean met with little resistance – Presenting
The Caribbean islands were the source of untapped riches such as sugarcane – Hope Island
Quite possibly contrived nonsense, but I enjoyed it
December 10, 2017 at 15:35 #1331492Quite clever using the different meaning of Shuil; Shuil Oilean’s dam was Shuil Tapaidh in which I assume Shuil means eye rather than hope or expectation. Shuil Oilean’s name could mean either (though is not the Irish name for Ireland’s Eye it seems).
December 10, 2017 at 18:30 #1331533Is this a joke? Red Leg rum is one of the best sellers of rum at all the major supermarkets
December 10, 2017 at 19:18 #1331539That rum is named after a crustacean native to the Caribbean, Yeats.
So get back in yer box, ya crabby crab crab.

Yeah always wondered this too- when it won a Down Royal in November, there was a crowd very pleased for obvious reasons!

I’ve just spent 10 minutes trying to work out this name.
Someone explain please.
