This old trooper, with whom I’m sure many of you will be familiar, was sadly put down on Tuesday having been kicked in the field and shattered the bones in his leg.
It really was a terribly sad way for such a special horse to go.Following a storming season he went off as one of the favourites in the 2005 Grand National and was one of few to make it all the way round that year.
He was a regular in the Scottish National and was always a very popular horse whenever he ran, especially north of the border. On top of that, he was an absolute gem at home and a true gentleman to ride. He enjoyed his days out on the hunting field and was one of the best jumpers around, both on and off the racecourse.
A great grey gentleman of a horse.
RIP Roscoe (Strong Resolve)
August 13, 2008 at 20:11 #176924Oh bugger,really sorry to hear that Lekha.
Thanks for letting us know.
August 13, 2008 at 21:49 #176928Sad news indeed
Grey, bold fencer, front runner: a combination that is always enjoyable to watch
Ta very much the well-named Strong Resolve
August 14, 2008 at 01:41 #176953How sad; he was such a favourite of mine, saw him several times but mainly at Kelso where we used to go to the fence opposite the stands to see them jump up close..it’s terrible when any horse dies, but for it to happen to a horse that was such a safe, sound jumper it seems so unfair.Hate to see any horses name in this section, but when it’s one that holds a special place in your affections it’s even worse..please pass on condolences to everyone…I’m so sorry…mo
August 14, 2008 at 08:45 #176959That’s such a shame. I enjoyed watching him and hoped he would enjoy a nice life after his racing days were over. It must have been horrible for whoever found him like that and I hope it was all over quickly for him. RIP
August 14, 2008 at 08:53 #176961That’s terrible news

RIPAugust 14, 2008 at 13:27 #176993Strong Resolve has provided a lot of enjoyment for me watching the Scottish jumping circuit and will be missed.
One memory not to be forgotten was a determined front running performance followed by a stirring battle to get the better of another sadly departed, No Picnic, at Kelso last November.
Lekha – I’m sure you have many great memories of the fine grey gelding.
R.I.P. Strong Resolve.

August 14, 2008 at 17:39 #177018This is desperate news, and my thoughts go out to all concerned with this stalwart of the staying chase scene. You knew him better than the rest of us, Lekha, and you must be in bits over this. Do please hold on to the memories of the many fine moments he gave you and all his people, at home and on the track.
Rest easy, Strong Resolve.

August 17, 2008 at 11:27 #177204Its a real shame to lose such a good jumper to a horrible freak accident.

September 4, 2008 at 20:52 #179413I as an artist, painted a picture of a grey horse; the gentleman who purchased the picture asked if he could come and watch me ride racehorses, then asked the trainer Jim Barclay if we would take him to Ireland to buy a fine horse. Jim and his daughter, myself and friend flew to Ireland to buy a horse which turned out to be Strong Resolve.
We saw lots of horses, but Jim knew Strong Resolve was the one for us. We watched him do some dressage and have a swim. A few weeks later he was delivered to Jim’s stables in Kinross and settled in straight away. We had such fun and success with him; we all loved Strong Resolve very much and miss him greatly.
I now live in Kansas USA but when back in Scotland I spend time with the Barclay family and the racehorses; we will always talk about Strong Resolve. Just thought I’d share this with those who have a personal interest and let you know the story behind how Strong Resolve came to be in Scotland, it all started with my painting.
Rest in Peace Strong Resolve xxxxSeptember 4, 2008 at 21:46 #179422what a lovely story..I was at Kelso Racecourse earlier in the week…we were just on our way back from Floors Castle..we drove past the course and parked the car on the bend by the golf course to have a coffee..please know that I will never be at Kelso and not remember him….
September 5, 2008 at 10:00 #179482What a wonderful story. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
Roscoe (as he was known at home) was a very special horse and was a true gentleman to ride. He was the one that new people would ride at the yard because it was known that he could be trusted to look after whoever was on his back.
September 5, 2008 at 10:59 #179493A lovely story. Again, many thanks.
