Can anyone tell me the guide to times of horses finishing in races please, ie, if the winner finishes the race in 1:26:00 and the runner up and third are 3 and 2 lengths behind it, what times can I attribute to the runner up and third for finishing those distances behind – is there a standard allowance per length/second or something?
[flat racing only and are there different guides for polytrack/going please?]
Many thanks in advance.
April 1, 2009 at 12:12 #219483The official way of calculating winning distances changed last year…..
A new finishing distance called A Nose is being inserted between Dead Heat and Short Head. There is also new distances for 2 1/4, 2 3/4, 3 1/4 and 4 1/2 length distances.
More significantly the judge will be calculating all distances based on the surface and going.
Previously distances were calculated at 4 lengths per second for the jumps and 5 lengths per second on the flat.
From Monday the changes will be:
Jumps
4L/s good to soft or worse
5L/s good or betterFlat Turf
5L/s soft or worse
6L/s good or betterFibresand
5L/sPolytrack
6L/sApril 1, 2009 at 12:45 #219488If there are mixed going readings, as was the case at Folkestone yesterday, it is the going in the home straight that is used for the time calculation.
Yesterday the first five race sheets, on the straight course where the going was good, came through at 6L/s as expected.
The final two also came through as 6L/s even though the round course going was good to soft, good in places and we would have expected an intermediate 5 1/2L/s.
However the judges guidebook came up with the explanation above – which I suppose makes some sense as the home straight going is the going they come home on.

6L/sThat’s what I was after Paul, thanks.
April 3, 2009 at 12:26 #219951It is a little more complicated than that, according to the BHA press release last summer, which is mentioned here:
http://betting.betfair.com/horse-racing … 10409.html
* Good or quicker turf, and polytrack at Kempton, Lingfield and Wolverhampton = 6 lengths per second
* From good (good to soft in places) to Good to soft (Soft in places), and polytrack at Great Leighs = 5.5 lengths per second
* Soft (good to soft in places) and softer, and fibresand at Southwell = 5 lengths per second.
