Ms Turner is returning to the saddle for the Shergar Cup:

It’s a bit of a disgrace in my opinion. The injuries to Cathy Gannon and Sammy Jo Bell have opened up the chance for another up-and-coming young female jockey to get a bit of exposure, just like SJB did last year.

Turner’s return slams that door shut.

I’m by no means an expert on the flat but have seen Josephine Gordon has ridden a lot of winners recently, would be a shame if she was denied a ride at Ascot because of this

I see your points. I guess they were after another big name after the big name withdrawal of Michelle Payne. It is certainly bringing the (for me) non-event into the headlines.

I am surprised LostSoldier3 did not name any of the other women jockeys in the UK who would fit the bill. I suppose that Josephine Gordon would have the most experience and would do a good job. But Hayley has the right profile for the event. If the injured Cathy Gannon cannot eventually make it, then maybe they will select a relatively inexperienced and unknown UK or Irish woman to join the team. Hayley has bags of experience of this event, of Ascot, and riding in UK conditions, and still rides out at Newmarket. She is also a person known outside of the UK, with experience of riding overseas in big races in the USA and Japan.

If they really wanted to strengthen the team, both in PR and capability terms, perhaps they should invite one of the three women in the top ten jockeys in New Zealand. Lisa Allpress, first in the table with 150 winners from 845 rides this season; Danielle Johnson, third with 88 winners from 570 rides; or Rosie Myers, ninth with 60 winners from 553 rides. Of course, if they wanted an Australian woman to replace Michelle Payne perhaps they should try and persuade Linda Meech, seventh in the Aussie jockeys table this season with 93 winners from 590 rides, to demonstrate to the slow-thinking UK trainers and owners the value of encouraging the talent and ability of young women jockeys in the UK.

There is no disgrace in Hayley being invited. It might be a bit of a disgrace that UK racing is, in this respect like so many others, still behind the times.

When I read posts like MV’s above I really wish there was a “like” option on this forum.

Indeed, Josephine Gordon or Hollie Doyle would be great choices. Michael Bell’s conditional Lulu Stanford looks like a special talent too – arguably the best of the current bunch.

Seems a good move, everyone loves Hayley. A bigger surprise to me was last years Silver Saddle winner and the only woman ever to win it was only a reserve this year.

Seems like a missed opportunity to give one of the new up and coming UK female jockeys a chance in the spotlight. Does anyone know if Hayley Turner is planning to ride prior to the Shergar Cup? Riding out is totally different to race riding and being out for the last nine months or so would surely have an impact.

Doubt it will be a factor at all on the day. The day after maybe.
