I wonder if a lot of the Ricci horses are stabled together at Colsutton as quite a few of them have run lamentably over the last few days.
We shall know for sure tomorrow LD, i wont be as concerned going forward if it is simply a cold, dont think that calls for retirement quite yet, fingers crossed the closutton vets find nothing apart from that!
December 29, 2017 at 19:15 #1334821The main thing is that he he didn’t appear lame as he was led of the course and later the vet has given him an examination and reported him as ‘post race normal’
Fingers crossed it is just a ‘cold’ as a lethargic performance on the track would not be surprising if that was the case and I know when I have had a cold over Christmas the last thing I wanted to do is exert an kind of effort physically – wonder if there is a horsey version of Lemsip they can give him?
December 29, 2017 at 19:18 #1334823I’d say the horses are all mixed up, I can’t see them being arranged based on owner. Wasn’t the story when vautour had his accident that he shared a paddock with shaneshill and they got on well. Not all the ricci horses ran poorly
December 29, 2017 at 20:01 #1334838The simplest explanation is usually the correct one, in all probability Faugheen has simply ‘bounced.’ I’ll be laying him wherever he turns up next, as much as I despise myself for even saying it.
4/6 Buveur D’air will be going into a lot of my multiples, although if Yorkhill gets rerouted it might be worth waiting to get on when he inevitably drifts.
December 29, 2017 at 21:05 #1334855Yeah, it’s not a nice spectacle seeing a wonderful horse like that just drop back in that manner and be dismounted. Hopefully back to full health very soon
But he’s 10 now, with a long spell out for injury, hard to see how he can ever get back to his best. Such a shame, in full flow he was magnificent; whatever the distance, whatever the ground
December 29, 2017 at 21:39 #1334864Amazing how the “experts” on here know better than the real experts (connections) and suggest Faugheen should be retired. Pure baloney to say a horse has bounced after nearly 6 weeks off, never had stevecaution down as someone who would suggest he could see him suffer a fatal injury if continued to be raced

Like Coneygree the horse looked lame behind but connections have denied this so it must be my aged suspect eyes (no surprise). Wouldn’t worry too much about the Champion Hurdle being a possible “damp squib” of a race with 10 weeks to go, plenty can happen before then, as today showed.
It’s not the first time Faugheen has done this though.
I have Buveur D’air at 4/1 for the Champion Hurdle and I don’t fear Faugheen turning up. The Henderson hurdler will run up the hat trick in my opinion. I said all of this a fair while ago on the forum, so it’s not aftertiming.
Buveur D’air just keeps on winning and he hosed up in the Champion Hurdle last season. The chances of Faugheen still retaining all his ability with age and injury eating at him is relatively low. Buveur D’air is a good hurdler and I am happy with my position on him. People will probably be scratching around for each-way value come Champion Hurdle day. I expect Buveur D’air to collect and without much fuss. Others are free to believe that some other outcome is more likely.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
December 29, 2017 at 22:10 #1334872Steve – it is the first time Faugheen has done this (i.e. not finished a race) and the Morgianna would tell you otherwise about him not retaining his ability (that performance on official ratings is better than anything BVD has done to date).
Maybe tests will reveal that he has another injury and it is a bridge too far and he gets retired but maybe they will reveal nothing at all and it simply has to be put down as him having an off day (we are talking about a flesh and blood animal afterall) but until we know either way it is premature to be writing him off just yet.
Yes I am most likely speaking with my rose tinted glasses firmly on but as much as I respect your opinion that you don’t fear Faugheen turning up, I believe if he does and it is the same Morgianna Faugheen he will be taking his title back.
I just hope that we all get the chance to be proved either right or wrong as the Festival will be all the more richer if we get to see it.
December 29, 2017 at 22:43 #1334884Faugheen re-injured himself at home and missed the Festival. I know, because I had him ante-post at good odds for the Champion Hurdle, only for him to miss the race.
People on another forum were cock-a-hoop that the horse was injured and would miss the race.
People can back whatever they want. I am just saying that I far prefer Buveur D’air now, having already sided with him anyway. It doesn’t matter one jot how good a horse was, it’s all about how good it is now.
I backed Faugheen ante-post for both the Neptune and The Champion Hurdle in the seasons he won. Myself and Nathan Hughes pretty much formed the fan club in those days for the horse on this forum, and plenty felt we had taken poor value at 3/1 in the Champion Hurdle, feeling that the horse may lack the speed.
I have nothing at all against any horse. I simply back the one I think most likely to win and try to get a good position early to minimise stakes required to win the same amount.
Isn’t there anyone in the Universe, let alone this forum, who is concerned that bookies are now offering 13/2 for Faugheen in the Champion Hurdle now and plenty of 6/1 also available? It was only recently the betting was pretty much level pegging.
I feel I am living in a pretty much solo state of realism here. Lump on if you feel confident. Usually it doesn’t happen in my experience though.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I don’t remember you paying the annual sub SC
December 29, 2017 at 23:59 #1334902We don’t know if he is injured at that moment though but I take your point – I heard Matt Chapman mention immediately after the race that people on social media were almost speaking like they were happy that this had happened, which is a sad commentary on some people in this day and age.
Just looked at Oddschecker and Stan James and Sportingbet are quoting him at 2-1 & 7/4 which is shameful and a few others have quotes of 5s and 6s – assume they must all know something even connections don’t, common sense tells you he should be removed from all lists until more is known.
Personally I wouldn’t back him even if he turned up on the day he would just be a watching thing for me – if I had to have a bet it would probably be on MTOY at 16s as you can pretty much set your clock on him that he will place in a Champion regardless of who turns up.
December 30, 2017 at 06:01 #1334929I can’t remember a horse being pulled up and dismounted because of a cold. It looked bad and when a horse starts to look unsound physically, there has to be concern.
It’s ironic that Sizing John was too hot and Faugheen had a cold. I am hoping that Buveur D’air will be the one whose porridge turns out to be “Just right”
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
December 31, 2017 at 18:13 #1335187To say he bounced is a bit ridiculous, he didn’t run a little flat, he was slow from the off and was being passed at half way by horses he could normally put half a furlong on, even with Morgiana form.
Something was amiss, injury, illness or an extremely bad day, too early to say.
Would’ve needed a good clear season to be close to Buveur d’Air’s price in March, fingers crossed he makes the race, don’t fancy him coming back for 2019.
December 31, 2017 at 22:41 #1335209Depends what you define the term “Bounce” as really.
For me it means a horse who has been off the track a long time through injury but is nursed back to be able to run again. Although the horse can win on its comeback, the effort sometimes seems to manifest itself on the next start, as if the actual race has left the horse with a aggravation of the original problem, that surfaces fully during the second race back.
Plenty of people want to see Faugheen back to make a better race at Cheltenham but I have doubts the horse will reach his peak again. He’ll need to be close to it to beat Buveur D’air, despite the assumed great superiority some seem to feel exists. I would rather see the horse miss the race, than watch him break down at Cheltenham.
PS Happy Mahogany (sic) and a good New Year.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
