All eyes on Faugheen (1/6) to see if he can repeat his Punchetown run. Mullins and Elliot the only Trainers involved in this race which is understandable given the €100,000 prize money on offer. Elliot will be hoping to take the place money for 2nd and 3rd and has Campeador, who was well beaten by Faugheen last time, Mick Jazz, who hasn’t really sparkled yet in open company, and The Game Changer, who was also poor last time out, all vying to get some place money. Because of the small field it seems that at least 1 of them is gonna collect some money. Mullins runs Cilaos Emery, who was disappointing last day over 2m4f. Not really a race to have a good bet on but there is big money to be collected for 2nd and 3rd and Faugheen still has to jump the hurdles to get it done. Hopefully he gets around in 1 piece and the battle with Buveur Dair gets closer.
December 29, 2017 at 11:21 #1334669Watching brief for me but Cilaos Emery does look a filthy ew bet for those so inclined.
December 29, 2017 at 11:24 #1334670tbh Faugheen on “form” ratings looks excellent value @ 1/6, but has had injuries. Likes to front run too and will Gordon Elliott send one to the fore in order to disrupt Faugheen’s jumping? Not my sort of price either, although wouldn’t oppose him. Hopefully comes through this because the Champion Hurdle needs two good horses.
Value Is EverythingDecember 29, 2017 at 13:05 #1334689Another two Mullins horses underperform, starting to get a bit concerned – last 14 days 10 winners from 52 runners and in the last two days 16 runners without a winner.
Faugheen should laugh at this lot but then Min should have done the same and we know how that turned out – not worried about his jumping as he has always tended to be a bit clumsy at one or two (remember the 2nd last in his Champion Hurdle win and the last in the Irish Champion Hurdle) and Mullins has been very pleased with him since his return.
Fingers crossed.
December 29, 2017 at 13:13 #1334691Kate Appleby Shoes has just gone in for him (WPM) at Limerick – hopefully things are on the up!
December 29, 2017 at 13:21 #1334692Faugheen wins this by whatever he decides. Don’t overreact to mullins stable form. Today for example caro de flos never won a race before today, ballyward only back from an injury having first run over hurdles. Yesterday bacardys just made one mistake. Nichols canyon obviously fell but Bapaume and Augusta Kate ran very good races behind apples jade, djakadam and yorkhill were never going to win either way. Min was unlucky and we all talk about the bounce factor in second runs after a injury break. Footpad was electric, sympa de flos was brilliant at Limerick, cut the mustard returned abnormal post race, pause and ponder lost a shoe and finished lame. He was going to have a 1-2-3 in the grade one novice only for the bad luck at the last, had a very nice maiden winner on day one. Overall I think it was more bad luck than bad form. I have every confidence in faugheen and cilaos emery will probably come second.

Great post and couldnt agree more. He’s just had back-to-back winners, hopefully topped off by Faugheen on the bridle.
December 29, 2017 at 13:52 #1334698Maiden winner on day 2 I meant sorry. Also had two very impressive bumper winners on day one and 2 while yesterday came 3rd in bumper. Also had al boum photo who was going to win easily but for the error at the last at Limerick.
Looks like the luck has changed now, I don’t think its a form issue
December 29, 2017 at 14:01 #1334702Considering falls and placed horses etc even before today imo Mullins is/wasn’t in bad form at all.
Value Is EverythingDecember 29, 2017 at 14:28 #1334708When assessing form of yards got to take “luck” out of calculations. Bacardys falling, horses not staying like Yorkhill and other things/excuses… Djakadam having a hard race in the John Durkan, Low Sun lost by a short head, Bapaume ran if anything better than could be expected in 3rd, Augusta Kate outclassed, Voix Du Reve and Chataux Conti also outsiders, Nichols Canyon’s fatal fall, Francin 3rd at 6/4 but ran well enough to be beaten less than a length, Epicurius odds-on on debut didn’t jump well enough. Sharjah and Real Steel fighting out the finish at the last before both falling – and who won that race? Mullins’ Wiskey Sour. One or two, Min and Meri Divie in particular disappointed but it’s not that bad to consider him out of form imo. Strict strike rates don’t tell the full story.
Value Is EverythingDecember 29, 2017 at 14:34 #1334709And it strikes again – that could be it for him now
December 29, 2017 at 14:35 #1334711Bummer
December 29, 2017 at 14:36 #1334712Shocking!!!! That could be it for him…. I mean career wise
December 29, 2017 at 14:38 #1334716Seem to be walking ok as Townend took him off the course – this sucks especially since the Champion Hurdle now looks like a one horse race
December 29, 2017 at 14:39 #1334717Whether you’ve backed Buveur D’Air or not, Faugheen missing the race is terrible news for the sport.
I expect he will be retired now
December 29, 2017 at 14:40 #1334718Whats the betting that NTD re-routes The New One back to the Champion now?
