Race times are always an issue but hopefully going forward Irish race times can be incorporated with those on this side of the sea with much better spacing where possible, bearing in mind on busy days (especially during the winter season) there simply won’t be enough time in the day to avoid some overlapping.
The fixtures lists were already well in place before the deal was done with HRI so I suspect there wasn’t much that could be done re race times being only 5mins apart in some cases – RTV will always have more problems in this regard simply due to the number of courses they have on their books. However, I do think more can be done to ensure races go off to time like getting fields (big ones in particular) down to the start a bit earlier to give you more time to account for the odd unruly horse etc.
In a lot of cases we really are spoilt as before dedicated racing channels arrived on tv you would have had to visit a local bookmaker in the high street to watch these races and then they would also have overlapping, so it is not a new problem. With the amount of courses they have I think RTV will need to give serious consideration to a RTV2 channel as it is all well and good having the option to watch other channels on their online extra service but it will mean a lot of people without a pc/mac/laptop will miss out.
I am extremely fortunate to have not only RTV & SSR TV packages but also access to RTV online Extra service and whilst it is very annoying when clashes happen (especially when it is a low level race and a higher class race) I think we can all admit that what we have now is infinitly better than just the 3 (or 4 on special days if you were lucky) races that terrestial tv used to serve up back in the day, when BBC/ITV(through World of Sport) and laterly Channel 4 were the only shows in town (each of which had their own respective issues that would often drive you to despair).
Yes the current iteration can be improved upon no doubt and with the new deals done recently it is still very much an evolving process on ironing out these (and other) issues but lets not lose sight of the fact that we now live in an age where we have more racing on our screens then ever before and more ways of accessing it to.
October 13, 2019 at 19:44 #1467795According to the schedule lists SSR and Rtv are showing Ascot is this the case?
Three channels showing the same course is a bit excessive, Rtv have enough going on next Saturday they don’t need Ascot but they are too greedy to give it up.
October 15, 2019 at 13:07 #1467904Steve,I think you will find it’s the sponsors who want the biggest target audience.
As I understand it Ascot doesn’t own the rights to ‘Champions Day’,Qipco does and what they say goes!
Why wouldn’t RacingTV want to show one of the biggest meetings of the year?October 15, 2019 at 20:21 #1470264@blackcountrykid Racing UK/Racing tv have always been greedy and wanted all the courses they could get even though they have no room for everything in previous years they took the rights to American racing then got bored with it and gave up they had South African racing rights but never showed any courses now they have Irish racing because they can’t bear the opposition to have it and they are struggling to cope with all the meetings they have.
Maybe if Racing TV concentrated on having the best courses and stopped trying to get one over on SSR then they might have a product people were prepared to buy.
The could be grown up and say hey itv and SSR have Ascot this Saturday we have 5 meetings and will leave it alone but no they have to have everything and will end up split screen with Catterick 5 mins behind.
October 24, 2019 at 21:47 #1472463Saturday wtf is going on with the race schedulers
Kelso & Leopardstown 1.20pm – why doesn’t Kelso go off at 1.15?
Cheltenham 5 mins before Galway all afternoon & Cheltenham have a number of 3m races.
October 25, 2019 at 06:36 #1472478wtf is inappropriate about Steve’s reply above? I totally agree with it.
I suppose it’s partially the fault of ITV showing action from three fixtures and it’s difficult to schedule 5 meetings in one day, but there’s no reason why the races could have been better timed.
Perhaps they should rename the channel bookmakers TV as all they seem to care about is showing as much racing as possible and so what about the viewers. I’m already questioning the wisdom of reactivating my membership recently, I seriously doubt I’ll be extending it for a second year.
October 25, 2019 at 08:44 #1472481@philwalker probably the use of wtf we have a lot of snowflakes around these days who dare not be offended.
October 25, 2019 at 17:31 #1472742A bit of common sense has happened Kelso 1.20pm now 1.15pm
October 25, 2019 at 18:07 #1472744Thanks Steve, at least it’s a start…
Doncaster and/or Newbury may be called off because of a waterlogged course, if so more breaks will appear accordingly in the race schedule
October 25, 2019 at 18:59 #1472746@philwalker not a chance of Doncaster going ahead been raining all day and forecast to rain until well into tomorrow afternoon none stop
October 26, 2019 at 09:20 #1472844Donny and Newbury both off – good news for us jumps fans!
October 26, 2019 at 10:08 #1472848Cheltenham delayed 5 mins per race will go off same time as Galway all afternoon
October 26, 2019 at 10:57 #1472860No no no no you have to be joking, that’s absurd and a total joke 🤬 more than likely they will use their now common argument that if you want proper action then go to ITV.
Something has to be done about this.
October 26, 2019 at 12:16 #1472882RTV should order Galway to start at least 5mins later or their races won’t be shown…if the Irish dont like it then tough!
October 26, 2019 at 12:47 #1472888@runandskip48 I suspect Irish tv will be showing Galway which means Rtv might be at the mercy of itv and irish schedulers.
Cheltenham inspecting course at 1.15pm
October 26, 2019 at 14:07 #1472901Galway going off 10 mins after schedule it shows they can do it when they want.
November 29, 2019 at 08:02 #1476066Racing TV doing a £10 per month for the next 12 months deal, just for today. Good value imo.
