Unfortunately also unable to access the ATR website to watch a replay but I’ve read quite a few positive reports about the performance.
However, despite Shark Hanlon saying for 2 years he’s got a definite Gold Cup horse, he’s now saying that the horse needs to improve his jumping if he’s to be worthy of a RSA entry. Really is pathetic. Should be embarrassed about his previous comments.
December 29, 2011 at 17:05 #384803On that performance, there’s no way he deserves to be considered a challenger for the RSA. 12-1 is a joke.
December 29, 2011 at 17:18 #384810I don’t think they’re offering 12/1 as a fair reflection of his chance. Must just be to do with liability or something. Or perhaps Paddy just thinks the RSA picture is wide open given the 6/4 hotpot favourite looks like going for the Gold Cup and nothing else has come out and put together a couple of good performances other than Last Instalment who’s won a couple of early season Graded novice chases and may well get left behind later in the season because of horses like Hidden Cyclone.
First Lieutenant looks like having no chance, Bog Warrior has yet to step up in trip (although granted he looks like going for the Arkle), Join Together is a 4-miler, Silviniaco Conti doesn’t seem anywhere near good enough, Bob’s Worth is very falsely priced and disappointed at Kempton, Sir Des Champs was unconvincing the other day when he might have been beaten and Sonofvic hasn’t been seen since beaten by Grands Crus while getting 7lbs.
Wide-open RSA and don’t blame them for wanting to dodge any horse at this stage, other than Grands Crus.
December 29, 2011 at 18:48 #384832Bobs Worth looks the most likely winner now the owner of Grands Crus is favouring the Gold Cup
December 29, 2011 at 19:17 #384838A brief overview of the Irish staying novices; Bog Warrior, very impressive at F’House, was running very free even before he fell, so I’ll reserve judgement. Sir Deschamps looked 50/50 at best with Knockfierna when she fell. She’s a decent mare, but not top-class, so it has to be disappointing. Last Instalment was easily the pick; jumped well, accelerating into his fences, finished full of running. Hidden Cyclone made a very acceptable debut, will surely improve, and is a definite contender.
December 29, 2011 at 20:00 #384863Hidden Cyclone looked like an old fashioned galloper and jumper today, just the type for RSA. I was surprised when he quickened readily coming to the last and again on the run in. Looked like he’d come on a fair bit for the race and is well overpriced at 25s IMO
December 29, 2011 at 20:09 #384868I would not dismiss Sir Des Champs on the back of his latest run, he needed evey yard of the trip when he won at Cheltenham and a step up in trip is needed, hopefully the Moriarty is next on the agenda, also bear in mind a number of WM’s fancied runners did not see out their races over the xmas period. Very open race though if Grands Crus goes for the Gold Cup.
December 29, 2011 at 20:21 #384870An open race indeed. All four of the Gigginstown horses will have good chances if they run. Bog Warrior was brilliant when winning the Drinmore; First Lieutenant will surely improve for 3 miles at Cheltenham on decent ground; Last Instalment has done nothing wrong over fences and Sir Des Champs brought Emmet Mullins on a nice ride around Limerick the other day They’ll surely try keep them apart at the big festivals.
Sir Des Champs has quite a bit of speed imo (I’d view the race he won at Cheltenham as a victory for speed as much as stamina to be honest, was like he had a rocket up his a$$), so the Jewson could be the race for him. I do think he’ll stay the RSA trip but they have the others for that.
First Lieutenant must be a highly likely RSA runner. He’s not ground dependent and it’s been his target all year. 20/1 is a decent price imo, he’ll hardly be bigger than 12/1 on the day. Last Instalment will also probably run. He was supposedly reliant on soft ground but it wasn’t soft the other day and he hacked up. If in the same form in March he’ll be hard to beat.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of them stay home for the Powers Gold Cup. Bog Warrior could be the one?
December 29, 2011 at 20:27 #384873I think you are probably spot on, Gigginstown normally run them against each other at home to find the pecking order then for the festivals it is usually the number one choice, only the Supreme last season had more than one Gigginstown owned in the race, but as they have so many staying novice chase options and First Lieutenant already confirmed, it probably will be Last Instalment also and SDC to the Jewsons, but that could change on the back of the Moriarty Chase.

Wide-open RSA and don’t blame them for wanting to dodge any horse at this stage, other than Grands Crus.
I disagree about Bobs Worth – he’ll be better round Cheltenham.
Join Together has obvious claims, as do Sonofvic and Silvi C. last Instalment, too.
Mossley has made one major mistake which cost him a race – many an RSA champ has won from thereDecember 30, 2011 at 01:35 #384913Grand Crus is being totally over-rated at the moment; I’ll be laying him and I’m confident of a profit. The Irish challenge looks formidable, and most of them are capable of significant improvement.

I like Bob’s Worth don’t get me wrong. But he was 10/1 after his win over Cue Card and now he’s 8/1 after getting stuffed by 2 other candidates.

Who’s this ?
" Held up, not fluent 5th, mistake 9th, went close 2nd when blundered 4 out, soon pushed along, held when blundered again 3 out, no chance with winner "
RSA winner Albertas Run in a race that season and a far worse performance than Mossleys.
January 2, 2012 at 21:48 #385411Yup, ok fair enough.
Reading on twitter from a very reliable poster than Bob’s Worth has had a wind operation.
January 2, 2012 at 23:15 #385415Join together is just another Aiteenthirtythree mark 2. Not quick enough to win an RSA.
Lay him till the cows come home.

Interesting. Apparently at Kempton he had two handlers in the preparade ring
Still my selection for the race, moreso now that it’s likely Grand Crus will be in the Gold Cup. Bobs Worth is a better horse than Burton Port, who came second in the race.
January 3, 2012 at 11:11 #385437Shark Hanlon after Hidden Cyclone won last week;
"He wasn’t 100 per cent and will improve a good bit. His jumping wasgoodbut Andrew[McNamara]said it would have to improve to move up to Graded class," said Hanlon.
"He’ll run next in a race at Fairyhouse at the end of next month and we’ll think about Cheltenham after that."
Shark Hanlon yesterday;
"I thought it was a hell of a performance first time over fences," said the Co Carlow handler.
"We still don’t know how good he is. Andrew McNamara said he never came out of second gear and he jumped like a buck.
"I was going to take him to Fairyhouse for a winners-of-one but I think I’ll take him back to Leopardstown for a Grade Two at the Irish Champion Hurdle meeting.
"Andrew said they couldn’t go fast enough for him, yet to me it looked like they were going a good lick.
"He was absolutely hacking turning in and Andrew said he couldn’t believe when he looked round that everyone was hard at it.
"That meant he was in front sooner than ideal but he had no choice as he was going so well. I was thrilled with him."
The total opposite of what he said the other day.
