‘It does, however, illustrate that people of his mentality think it’s one rule for him and another for everyone else.’
That’s what it’s all about. Ordinary people get fined for it every week so he should too. I personally don’t really care if people don’t wear a seatbelt, you’re not putting me at risk so it’s Darwinism in action.
Credit where it’s due Ian, you have read Sunak like a book.
January 21, 2023 at 13:29 #1631792Meanwhile, John and Brenda Smith, who got burgled earlier this week, havent even had a visit from local Lancs plod.
January 21, 2023 at 13:41 #1631795If you want a quick response regarding a burglary call and tell the police your handing out said justice physically yourself , once they arrive tell them he/she ran off but your happy to report said burglary

This is the point many made when Starmer was being investigated over non-law breaking but on that occasion there was a two week media campaign.
In any case, how much police time was taken up by watching a brief video of one of the most identifiable men in the country clearly breaking the law? I’m guessing not much. I’m sure if burglary victims have clear video evidence of someone they can identify then they’d probably secure a quick conviction too.
I’d much rather the police had time to visit burglary victims, investigate tax cheats and get rid of the thousands of sex offenders in their ranks but I see no issue with giving out fines when there’s clear evidence. Maybe they should be funded properly.

Any evidence to support this? Not like you to sound like a tabloid.

Over 1,000 cases from the Met alone being looked at, and that’s what’s been reported. Some will be getting away with it. The Met would appear to be the worst of them but it will be happening elsewhere too. ‘Hundreds’ would probably have been a better word but I don’t think ‘thousands’ is beyond the realms of possibility.
January 22, 2023 at 09:39 #1631833Zahawi, Sharp – it’s clear that a Party in office for 13 years and counting, particularly one with a creed about the politics of self, has come to believe it has a divine right to rule and can do whatever it likes.
Not saying Starmer will necessarily obtain a Blair 97-style landslide, but it’s going to take an unparalleled MSM hatchet job to get the Tories back in now, I feel.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 22, 2023 at 15:14 #1631885Just had a look at the current edition of “The Beano” in WH Smith. Roger the Dodger did not appear until the very last page. A terrible editorial decision.
He was trying to dodge out of going to school by sleeping too long. After his father dragged him out of bed, he then gave him a lecture about how he used to walk miles to school, even through blizzards. Roger, pictured on the back seat under a duvet and with a pillow, asked him to keep his voice down because he was trying to have a power nap.
I could not help being amused by a caption which read “Eek! I hope you have a seat belt on under that duvet, Roger!”

It’s Labour’s to lose Ian, the best thing they can do for themselves that is is to say and do nothing.
As they won’t be able to, once they start opening their traps they will be falling in all sorts of holes they dug themselves. But the pendulum has swung from the last election with no Corbyn and a much weaker cons party the main factors.Another of your comments, and it shouldn’t be like this “ but it’s going to take an unparalleled MSM hatchet job to get the Tories back in now, I feel”.
The left say MSM is right orientated, and the right say vice-versa. Interesting, as both suggest MSM are influencers when they want to be, and this is a big bug bear of mine. They should just report, and that’s it no opinions, no pieces told like a story and adding their two penneth which may not be true.

Exactly this, as I have said before, never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake. Labour just need to basically sit down, shut up and watch the Tories implode. I am not a Labour voter (or at least not thus far) but I think it’s fairly obvious which one I’d rather was in power.
As for the media, I think there’s a lot of confirmation bias. We see the things that reinforce our views and give less weight to the stuff we agree with.
There are more right than left newspapers but that’s probably reflective of the fact that on the whole older people are by far the biggest buyers of them and are more likely to be somewhere on the right. TV is much more moderate on the whole but that’s a lot to do with Ofcom. Anyone who tries to stray too far from the centre will soon attract Ofcom’s attention, you only need to look at GB News to see that. There’s media out there for everyone.
January 23, 2023 at 22:06 #1631992My politics are best described as “Not a Conservative” and I am often reminded of what a Labour moderate colleague at The Independent said to me on 1997 Election Night as we sat on the Sports Desk waiting for the Exit Poll: “I don’t care if Labour do literally nothing in power. Even that would be preferable to continuing 18 years of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.”
Some might argue Tony Blair pretty much mirrored that low expectation sentiment in office, but I think a combination of the catastrophic fiscal event pollster John Curtice says governments never recover from, the diminishing integrity that accompanies any Party in power too long and that good old “It’s Time For A Change” will see Starmer home so long as he does EXACTLY what Blair did on the run up to 1997 – gag the Left of his party and say as little as possible himself beyond mocking his beleaguered opposite number.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 24, 2023 at 05:32 #1632005As a scot we have not voted for a right wing govt since 1955 hence how frustrated many Scots are. I would say I’m left of centre politically but the right wing media now are a total disgrace to the word news. For instance the daily mail berates nicola sturgeon constantly for the state of everything but not a peep how horrific the Westminster tories are doing. The times and telegraph occasionally are even handed but the rest of the right wing are a total joke. Only read the independent and the new statesman. The guardian has become impossible to read bar the occasional opinion piece. IMHO of course. Agree that starmer needs to just go steady and he wins. The total **** up with truss and Boris constant rule breaking will haunt the tories for a decade.
January 24, 2023 at 09:06 #1632011You sometimes need to look at what they don’t report. The Mail leads with Johnson’s latest pathetic photo opportunity in Ukraine, the Express and Telegraph have a ‘look over there’ story about those scary asylum seekers and The Sun reverts to celeb rubbish.
One of the media’s jobs is to hold power to account. Why, then, almost nothing about the Zahawi affair or Johnson’s dodgy looking loan deal? Even The Star does a better job of it than the above who would all consider themselves to be more of a serious newspaper than it.
January 24, 2023 at 19:08 #1632048Exactly. These papers know how bad things are with horrendous govt corruption but are so desperate to keep the tories in power so they can line their pockets. They should be called propaganda papers more than news as they have no connection to actual events and don’t convey the reality of the UK today. They are letting so many corrupt and immoral people get away with it. Utterly shameful.
January 25, 2023 at 08:04 #1632098Can you imagine the reaction if you replace Zahawi’s name with a Labour Chancellor? They are normally the first to complain about taxpayers cash being wasted, how is this any different?
Or replace Johnson’s with a Labour PM’s? They hate the BBC, think it’s biased but seem to have no issue with a Tory Chair who has given significant sums to them being appointed in these circumstances. It was discussed on Kuenssberg by Duncan Smith and Johnson’s own sister!
