The Festival meeting there was one that was always on my calendar when I lived down south, it’s lost a bit of lustre these days but field sizes are good for the first day. The Brighton Mile on Wednesday looks a tight contest.
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 6
Brighton
3.45 Mafnood 82; Lifestyle 80; Man Of La Mancha 80; Al Rufaa 79; Mostawaa 79; Kracking 79; Havana Mojito 79August 5, 2025 at 14:40 #1737678Top rated returns for the last couple of months have been dire(9 wins in June and 6 in July), but 2nd rated have been doing the business to the point where we’ve 52 winners from 204 races from top two. Can’t exactly advise ignoring the top rated and taking the second…, but at least suggests the figures are in the right areas.
Racing League meeting at Chepstow and I’ve rated all 7 races. The league format isn’t my cup of tea and has plenty of detractors on here, but it gives competitive racing for decent prize money, everyone’s trying and there’s an open market. That’s a 4-1 victory to the ‘Yes I’ll consider it’ so here goes…
Brighton stage their Challenge Cup which has a £10k prize for the winenr, the contest having been worth £13k to the winner in 1990. A meeting full of competitive racing, but they are doing it on the cheap.

Meanwhile I’ll switch down the sensitivity of the crap-o-meter in order to get through the ordeal that is Musselburgh Ladies Day!
All runners listed for the Thirsk 1m 4f handicap…, sort that one out!

Two of them were Field Form and Class Handicapping.
Class Handicapping identified the two ‘Class Horses’ in handicaps of 6 or more runners comparing race weights with those in last two handicaps, the rough principle being that a horse raised in weight is dropped in class and falling in the weights is raised in class. With changes in ratings that’s not always true, but the principle is more or less accurate.
Field Form compared weights in a rather convoluted way to come to a selection. Experimentation proved that the maths was flawed so the method didn’t make sense. However the means of narrowing the field down was useful and it used the weight from it’s closest finish of last 2 races for comparison.
Suffice to say I’ve come up with a combination of the two to refine the selection of Class Horses and I’m having dry run at the oment. If results are satisfactory I may well start a thread on the ‘new method’. Great advantage is that it’s a lot less time consuming than the ratings on this thread, but it does use the betting forecast to narrow selections down so it can’t be caluclated until the evening before rather than the 2 days in advance that I manage with ‘The Compleat Hadnicapper’ Method herein.
August 7, 2025 at 16:21 #1737725Saturdays’ ratings below, I’m assuming numbers 11 and 12 at Ascot are ressies but it’s not absolutely clear from Racing Post cards. Given that runners get take home pay of £600+ just for turning up I find it surprising that they couldn’t fill all races, but since it’s jammed in between Goodwood and York then maybe not!

I had calculated them, but was hit by a rather nasty infection that floored me for the last 2 days. Managed to get my Ebor Competition entry in but then went off to bed.
Goodwood is the main meeting today. Plantadream dcomes out well top, but I’ve put a question mark against his figure as he’s not run since last November when finishing behind Bullet Point, the ‘measure horse’ who has zoomed up the ratings. The rating would have been even higher next week as Bullet Point has gone up again!
