The deal to buy the Post took ages to come to fruition, and there was never any certainty that it would until the final contract was signed. The Irish consortium was named as the preferred bidder several weeks ago, but that was still no guarantee that they would be able to come up with a bid that would be acceptable to MGN. Under those circumstances, AB was entitled to take a place on the Timeform board, since he had no way of knowing what the future of the Post buyout was, if any.
Now that it has come off, I doubt he will have much time to devote to other activities anyway. Seven per cent is an awful lot of readers to lose in 12 months, and it is always a great deal easier to shed them than it is to tempt them back.
August 9, 2007 at 12:51 #110949Surely the decline in readers of the paper edition of the RP is inevitable. I think it was about three years ago I last bought a paper of any description. The future of media is online and pumping money into old print media is not a smart move IMO.
The racing sports betting community could be really well served by a first class online source. "The Sportsman" would fit the bill as the title!

not for a moment do i suggest – or have any reason even for the thought to cross my mind – that AB has done anything in any way wrong.
the guy clearly has something about him to be so in demand that – to those of us looking on from the outside – he appears to be considered something of a "go to" man for commercial development of racing databases.
suggests it might be interesting for someone to do a profile on him…
on the deal itself, thanks for the confirmation……. though there appears still to be something about it stopping Trinity making the usual Stock Exchange announcement:

Zorro,
i’m heartened to hear that among racing journalists at least shines a hopeful light

August 21, 2007 at 02:44 #111895wonder if this explains – in part at least – the delay in any announcement.
from the Press Gazette:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
20th August 2007:Journalists at the Racing Post have expressed concern about being asked to pay a donation of £50 per person to the British Association of Journalists before it begins a legal fight for compensation on their behalf.
…Journalists believe they are entitled to compensation because Trinity Mirror transferred their contracts to holding company Centurycomm without consultation.
A letter sent to BAJ general secretary Steve Turner, signed by around 90 Racing Post journalists, said: “We understand that the BAJ, as the union recognised by the company, is the only body in a position to claim this compensation….
In response, Turner said in a letter: “…… Out of more than 150 employees in the sports division, only three are members of the BAJ.
“As all sports division journalists will benefit from the BAJ’s legal action, we ask each of you to give an individual undertaking that you will each pay £50 to the BAJ from whatever compensation is awarded to you by the tribunal.â€Â
