I’m sure racing’s response will be commensurate with the attrition rate it has to explain.
It’s probably folly to expect that no horse would ever die again were AW hurdling to be reintroduced – all modes of racing carry an inherent risk to its participants. The issue would be whether the death count is as bad – or anywhere near as bad – percentagewise as it was 14+ years ago. If trial meetings prove that it is, even with safer surfaces and obstacles provided, then yes, it may be an idea beyond saving.

March 3, 2008 at 21:27 #148214Of all the AW tracks it seemed to be the Lingfield equitrack which had a lot of fatalaties although im sure Grayson will have more access to stats than anyone here.
Just imagine,
8.20 The Floodlit Champion Hurdle 2m.
8.50 The Floodlit Stayers Hurdle 3m
March 3, 2008 at 22:14 #148237Some great memories there and a reminder to me what a great commentator Peter O’ Sullivan was, sent a shiver down my spine watching the Dessert Orchid one.
Also a reminder of the amount of things you can watch back with the likes of youtube available nowadays. Just had a great trip down memory lane for me watching Istabraq win his three Champion Hurdles, sending yet more shivers down the old spine.

I wish I did, but on this occasion I’d have to go through all the AW jumps meetings ever staged to accummulate the required stats – bit busy to do that just now. Even then, the oft-discussed reticence of every last media organ and racecourse to record every last fatality accurately would mean that precise figures could not be guaranteed.
