I have to agree with Paul on this. The reasons for the changes have been well explained here but very poor form from Punchestown to announce these changes so late in the day.
April 10, 2009 at 03:24 #221152Good article in Thursday’s Examiner on this issue.

April 10, 2009 at 11:25 #221162Sorry but I’m just being curious! Please don’t shoot me down but why fly in everyday – why not stay for the days of the race meeting?

No that is a fair question.
There are four main reasons – the first one being economics. It is much cheaper to fly each day – half the cost of staying over.
Secondly I have no interest whatsoever in the "social" hoo-ha surrounding the festival, therefore would need a hotel far enough away from the local area, which adds to the travelling time and to the wasted time. Whereas when flying I can work at the airport whilst waiting for the flight and also during the flight.
Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, I produce my own racecards and ratings when I go racing- at home I have everything I need to hand. I would have to waste time ensuring the hotel I choose had both decent wi-fi or high speed internet access and a business centre. Also that the business centre would be accessible when I wanted it – which can never be guaranteed (there are quite often only one or two desks in the business centre or they are only open 9-5 and it is not usually possible to link your laptop directly to their printer.) So it is just too much hassle.
Finally I also happen to prefer sleeping in my own bed
April 10, 2009 at 14:03 #221169I’m astonished by some of the posts on here. I didn’t know Punchestown had so many PR reps posting on TRF

The fact that Paul Ostermeyer has felt the need to justify his travel arrangements and extra-curricular preferences (or not) is absolutely bizarre.
Three weeks prior to the start of the meeting the organisers decide to make significant changes to the festival.
It stinks.

April 10, 2009 at 16:08 #221193Gosh I wasn’t being nosey – thanks for such a full reply! As I have never been on a plane in my life I have no idea re costs at all so I’ve just had a look at Ryanair – are those prices genuine???? I thought reducing the carbon footprint was an aim but at those prices people will use airlines! I did a 400 mile round trip this week to pick up a Royal Worcester Arkle I’d got at auction and a tank of fuel cost me far more than flying from Birmingham to Dublin return … and it took about 8 hours!!! Maybe another reason I need to get my phobia dealt with??!!!

If you book the right time the prices can be really stupid – for the first day the flights cost me £11.40 return (including all charges), Wednesday and Thursday were £23.30 each. The only "expensive" day was the Friday which came out at £64.80, the bulk of that being the return flight Friday evening.
The cheapest I have ever done London / Dublin is £8.00 all in.
The catch with Ryanair is the extra charges. The flights are cheap because I was travelling with only cabin baggage and checking in online. Had I decided to fly out Tuesday morning and come back Friday evening the total flight costs would have been almosrt the same.as I would have picked up an extra £40 in charges for one bag in the hold and having to check in at the airport. The other catch is the charges they levy do literally change from week to week.
