A wonderful performance from a filly who is probably the best I’ve seen.
An improvement if form was required against some established, older colts and she found more than enough.
Will we see her next year? Hopefully, but don’t hold your breath.
Youmzain ran with credit again and, although hard to win with, his consistency against the very best makes the form of the race impossible to criticise.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. The majority of racing enthusiasts wanted Duke Of Marmalade to run, but like Henrythenavigator, Yeats and Mastercraftsman, he travelled well and found precious little.
He’s had a hard season and perhaps Aiden should have kept him fresh for Santa Anita.
With Santa Anita being mentioned, it will be fantastic to see her make the journey. The manner of her victories suggest that she’s far from OTT and the race is hers to lose. She clearly handled the biggest occassion of her life.
Congratulations to Fist. He oftens gets criticised for his forthright views, but he was adamant that, not only would she win, but we would see something special.
We did.
October 5, 2008 at 21:09 #183598FOF isn’t afraid to put his neck on the line I admire that. Sometimes he’s right sometimes he’s wrong. This time he was bang on.
October 5, 2008 at 21:11 #183600Aga Khan has justed stated on Equidia that we won’t see her again this year. Has to be huge odds on that she wont run again at all.
October 5, 2008 at 21:37 #183603Phenomenal. Thought she was a bit far back at the top of the last turn, but once she saw daylight, it was never in doubt. A privilege to watch. A great filly.
October 5, 2008 at 22:16 #183607Hardly a bold call, jolly to win the Arc and win it well?
October 5, 2008 at 22:17 #183608We’ve all been extremely privileged to watch Zarkava in our lifes.
A filly, or horse by that matter, like her comes out once every…
What an AWESOME performance against the very best, except New Approach, but I don’t think that Bolger’s colt would have defeated her.
Today she battled like a giant, which is exactly what she is. Not from a physical point of view, but what a phenomenal, extraordinary, brilliant animal. Hail Zarkava!
Youmzain second again, flying in the final furlong, but today was beaten by a super star, a top, top class thoroughbred.
Finally, just a small comment on Soldier of Fortune. IMO, with a prep race, and someone more experienced on the saddle, he would have fought for victory. It seems to me that the final 100/150 metres turned out to be a bit hard on him, and I think he accused the four months being off the competition. I’ll definitely back him to win next time out.October 5, 2008 at 22:31 #183609Agree with that, New Approach wouldn’t have got to her quarters. A thouroughly safisfying conclusion with no excuses and a magnificent winning performance. Would expect that to be rated as the best Arc win since Sakhee ratings wise? Or has something been rated above Sakhee since?
October 5, 2008 at 22:49 #183613Best filly I’ve ever seen and has to be one of the best horses I’ve ever seen.
Have to agree
It was spine tingling. Beautiful performance. A great great horse. has she ever been under the slightest pressure?
Astonishing
October 5, 2008 at 22:51 #183614Under pressure? Never, including in the richest and most prestigeous turf race in the world.
October 5, 2008 at 22:52 #183616A breathtaking performance from Zarkava today, it was worth waiting for! It gave me the same feeling as watching Dancing Brave win his Arc, you just knew you had watched something special. She had anything but a smooth passage throughout the race and still won comfortably, that says it all. A great ride from Soumillon as well. What she did coming out of the starting stalls was a wee bit nerve wracking, especially when you’ve had a decent bet! Just glad she didn’t go through the tape and end up on the wrong side! Couldn’t believe the price this morning, missed the 5/2, but got 23/10
October 5, 2008 at 23:34 #183623Peruvian, IMO Zarkava’s rating is as good as Sakhee’s, if not better, and this Arc was a very strong field, as was the 2001 edition.
Now, this said, I think Hurricane Run defeated a very, very classy field in 2005, probably the best since Dancing Brave’s 1986 one, and he put in a scintillating performance under very difficult conditions, it was pelting in Longchamp, with a nerve wrecking ride by Kieren Fallon.
All these, of course, in my opinion.October 5, 2008 at 23:53 #183626We’ll see in tomorrows RP i suppose. I can’t see the ‘officials’ giving Zarkava more than Sakhee myself.
Would anyone be kind enough to post official ratings folling Arcs of last 10 years? Thanks in advance.
October 6, 2008 at 00:04 #183628Didnt back her myself as i thought the two Aidan O’Brien horses were better value but what a fantastic filly.
To come through a pack of top quality horses like that shows amazing class and you cannot help but admire a horse like that.

According to the RP…
Dylan Thomas (07) – 140
Rail Link (06) – 133
Hurricane Run (05) – 137
Bago (04) – 133
Dalakhani (03) – 137
Marelenbard (02) – 130
Sakhee (01) – 139
Sinndar (00) – 136
Monteju (99) – 138
Sagarnix (98) – 129October 6, 2008 at 00:22 #183630From a breeding point of view…
Zarkava and Dalakhani producing a future Arc winner – possibility?
October 6, 2008 at 00:55 #183641Dylan Thomas 140 ?
As in, as good as Dancing Brave 140 ?
That’s gotta be wrong……
