Does “Premier Racedays” mean even less good stuff mid-week?
The problem I have with jumps racing these days is there’s so little good racing away from Saturdays. I was considering getting back to betting, on Class 1 and 2 races (excluding mares)… But now even some of the bigger “weekend” meetings have scrapped or reduced the quality of their Fridays.
Don’t get me wrong. I understand most of the good stuff will be on a Saturday. I just want one Class 2 race every day (or even just every other day) to get my teeth into. Is that asking too much?

Get studying those dodgy Class 5 handicaps, with prize money a fraction of cash to be won betting, and stop moaning.

elite experts – there is a lot
of betting fodder to be found in duck egg dross – you just need to spend a few minutes more in the haystack.I have just got home with 20 bags of organic mixed nuts in shells, and on the way I passed a forlorn mannequin five foot father Xmas stood outside a shop with a white plastic beard. I must have been in Dreamland last night – I was sure he was cleanshaven.
The paucity of racing has grabbed my interest and I have already prepared the Taunton spills – less is more is good – David Marshall told me that, a man of some mastery in battle landscapes where soldiers are clones and there is nothing to win but prestige.
I have a busy day ahead. I rarely bet on Mondays but I am rather tempted.Strange

January 13, 2024 at 13:27 #1677160It would have been considerate if the Premier raceday at Warwick had waited about 10 seconds to start its not particularly important 1.15 race. That would have allowed the finish of the Towton, one of Wetherby’s most prestigious races, to be shown on RTV on a full screen.
But Wetherby is not a Premier fixture, so I suppose it just has to lump it.
January 16, 2024 at 19:14 #1677567Should Haydock and Ascot fall foul of the weather what will be shown? The two all weather meetings are morning and evening so we are down to Taunton and Navan who will probably escape the weather.
The more I know the less I understand.
January 17, 2024 at 16:30 #1677656Lingfield by the sound of it!
No 10.10 race this weekend, meeting has been moved to the standard afternoon slot.
....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.
January 17, 2024 at 16:43 #1677658Sounds like either Haydock, Ascot or both are highly unlikely to go ahead.
The more I know the less I understand.
January 17, 2024 at 16:57 #1677660I am not that far from Haydock. There is still plenty of snow and ice on the ground around here and it has been freezing all day.
January 17, 2024 at 17:09 #1677666Wouldn’t be surprised if one or both pull the stumps on Friday. Ascot has hard ground below the covers and the anticipated warmer weekend weather may not come quick enough.
The more I know the less I understand.
January 17, 2024 at 18:51 #1677678Regardless of what actually happens this weekend, planning to have no AW at peak times on weekends in January shows a certain lack of foresight. What is the all-weather for if it’s not to ensure that racing can at least put on some sort of show during all but the most extreme winter weather?
January 17, 2024 at 22:29 #1677689Don’t agree with that, every Saturday up until 23rd March there are 2 AW meetings scheduled for the evenings. These can be moved to an afternoon slot or additional meetings scheduled in extended periods of cold weather. With Irish meetings in the mix, scheduling AW meetings in the afternoon as well is the problem the BHA are trying to avoid – too much racing at once.
In any case, these days there’s not more than a week or two of really bad weather most winters.
....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.
February 8, 2024 at 10:10 #1680320The seven races to be shown on ITV this coming Saturday from the ‘Premier’ meetings at Newbury and Warwick, will have runner numbers as follows:
12 – 3 – 5 – 4 – 6 – 7 – 24
And that’s before any non runners because the ground has turned heavy at Warwick and soft at Newbury.
Those five middle races offer a total of £310k in prize money.
February 8, 2024 at 18:35 #1680369I assume 3 of the middle 5 races are the Denman, Game Spirit and Kingmaker. Races which have seldom attracted large fields despite the prize money.
I suppose the problems are: there are only so many good horses to go around; and trainers of horses that are just short of top class are reluctant to run them and risk finishing too close to a good horse and wrecking their handicap mark.
Maybe if handicappers took a more charitable view of such races they might attract a few more runners?
February 8, 2024 at 18:39 #1680370I doubt Warwick will go ahead, but for an ITV7 place pot, looks like a good target if all on.
February 9, 2024 at 13:57 #1680462The Warwick fixture is abandoned.
February 9, 2024 at 15:49 #1680468One time when Scotland seems to be a bit drier than elsewhere. Today is the first heavy rain we have had this week in Dunfermline and in the west Ayr has dried out a tad for next Tuesday’s meeting, though hopefully not enough to stop cult hero Ardera Cross notch up another course win!
February 9, 2024 at 15:54 #1680469Which other meeting will ITV use with Newbury. Wolverhampton kicks off at 5.30 and Newcastle 3.35 so will one be brought forward or will they show Naas.
The more I know the less I understand.
