I remember in the 70s a French horse called Tallyrand who had to be renamed Hakodate, because being named after a politician was considered disrespectful (to the politician). Has this convention changed, or was it peculiarly French?

I think the current policy is that surnames are fine since they are just about ambiguous enough.

If you’re using a full name, you need to get permission from someone with that name. It doesn’t have to be the most famous namesake though – if you had a willing neighbour called Katy Perry, you’d be good to go.

Some might recall the useful handicapper from the ’90s, Prends Ca

The story goes that the owner wanted to name it after his daughter’s favourite pop group who were Take That but said combo refused to allow it

This from the RP earlier this year:

Churchill is a village in Somerset, which might have given them a get out if there was any problem.

2.1.1 the name of a public Person may be registered if the Person or his family have given permission

I wonder if Henry Kissinger gave express permission for his name to be used (or indeed if the horse had any say in being lumbered with such an unfortunate name).

Speaking of politicized names, there was a horse called No To Trident who ran fairly recently and I wonder if that would fall foul of 1.1.9.3 may be offensive to religious, political or ethnic groups? Incidentally, there are horses called Brexit and Brexiteer but none called Remainer…

On a related note: just pondering the Coolmore/Ballydoyle names. The fillies tend to get rather bland adverbs and suchlike. (“Minding” what, the kids? The gap? “Found” 50p down the back of the sofa?)

The colts get ever more grandiose names to make Uncle Sam and John Bull’s hearts swell with pride. Utah. Wisconsin. Delano Roosevelt. US Army KicksAss. Housesofparliament. Landofhopeandglory. Orderofthegarter. Lancaster Bomber. Churchill.

The lads are surprisingly coy when it comes to Irish political and cultural history though. There have been a few tourist board friendly names- Giant’s Causeway, Yeats (Jack B? WB? Who knows?), Cliffs of Moher. There’s an Easter Lily on the go, and AOB used to train a Wolfe Tone but there’s not much else. A quick search reveals horses called De Valera, Dev, Michael Collins, Parnell, Pearse, Larkin, variations on Countess Markievicz, Home Rule, Croke Park, Hill Sixteen, Henry Joy, variations on Granuaile, Cuchulainn, Taoiseach. None bred owned or trained by the win factory. I wonder why that is.

Also: the equine Clemmie is full sister to Churchill. D’you think Coolmore plan to take inbreeding to a new level?

Thought he was named after this lad.

It seems to have passed people by but there is currently a jumper in training with Sophie Leech called Winston Churchill.

    BH:

the Irish Turf Club seems not to be anywhere near as prescriptive / proscriptive as the BHA on naming.

    by Irish Rule 86(v):

On receipt of an application for a name for a Horse the Registry
Office will communicate with Weatherbys and if there is no other
horse of the same name and provided that the name is not that of
a celebrated horse, or mare, the name will be registered in
accordance with paragraph (i)(b) of this Rule and published in the
Irish Racing Calendar (registrations supplement) and on the
    Racing Administration System (RÁS).

    Hitler in Chile

    Pol Pot in Brazil

reportedly Hitler owned the winner of the 1944 Austrian and German Derbies, a horse called Nordlicht now buried in Louisiana:

Nordlicht of courses translates as North Light, winner of the 2004 Derby.
