I spent an hour at it previously and tried and tried and tried. All I was able to produce was an old picture of you – and not even up to date – You never mentioned you’d been across the Somerset pond 🧐

I’d like to see that picture and I’m sure you can follow the simple instructions on how to upload it to bb photo upload and then simply click on copy, then post it directly into the reply box- Simples!

Back to the racing
January 26, 2021 at 13:41 #1519791Yep, you’ve clearly lost the picture Gamble.
The denser a population is, the more contact people are likely to have and therefore the more people are likely to come in to contact with Covid. ie There’s a far greater chance of getting Covid in a city than there is in a village… And cities with a denser population at a greater risk than less dense cities…
And it’s the same when considering countrys. Not only is the size of population important, it’s also population density. European countries with a large populations in Europe do not have anywhere near our population density.
England 56 Million people, average 424 per square kilometre.
France 65 million people, average per square km just 118.
Germany 83 million, 232 sq km
Italy 60 million, 200 sq km.
Spain 47 million, 92 sq km.
Belgium 12 million, 376 sq km.
Netherlands 17 million, 521 sq km.France has a population density of less than 28% of England’s.
Germany’s population density is 55% of England’s.
Italy’s population density is 47% of England’s.
Spain’s is less than 22%.
Belgium’s whole population (12 million) is much less than England’s but its population density is much nearer ours at 89%.
Netherlands also has a small population but has a greater density than England; 123%.Taking both population and population density into account it is hardly surprising England has a high number of deaths per million population.
Not only that, eg Ireland’s population is much more spread out, into rural areas.
Then there’s how each country’s statistics are made. eg What constitutes a Covid death. Is a suspected covid death counted (as in England) or do only those who’ve tested positive count?
Also average age of population is important, England has a greater number of older peple than many.
Hope that puts you more in the picture.
Personally, apart from Germany I’d put our performance as better than most on the above list.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 26, 2021 at 13:56 #1519793This Moonraker will be coming down your way soon Tank, so watch out!

You’ll be fairly handy for Wincanton races there – nice drive over the Mendips. When I went a lot with a racing buddy we used to stop for a beer in Bruton. Nice part of the country

What I believe is noteworthy is not the difference in cases and deaths per million between most countries in the wealthy West but how similar they are: 20 European countries currently have deaths in excess of 1000 per million with a further four bubbling under in the 900s
This despite different countries adopting different strategies to combat the virus and mitigate its spread. So, much as I enjoy putting the boot into our government’s response, a kicking is also due the governments of most of our near neighbours
It strikes me that being unprepared for pandemics – which has long been recognised as a serious threat, more significant than terrorism – was a pan-European failure, not just ours
Or, measures to combat pandemics are only succesful in countries with totalitarian regimes (China, Vietnam), or those with compliant populations (South Korea, Taiwan), or those fortunate enough to be far flung (New Zealand)
It’s all a fecking mess and historians of the future will grow rich composing bookshelves of conflicting analysis: they probably already are
January 26, 2021 at 18:24 #1519824I’ll be your short haired guvnor from down Broadmeed way
