Interesting indeed, and I have spent, many sun soaked weekends, with rolled up shirt sleeves, less often rolled up skirts, basking my bankbrokeciti pallor in the sublime quaintness of the English Riviera.

I would swap all those weekends stretched over many years for just one day in what was termed back then the Golden Age of Holidays. The heyday date was post war 1950 and what the Butler didn’t see was – sun, sea, not a-broad in sight, just frills and ageless class in a safer time with the freshest of bracing air !

That’s precisely the problem gamble-man. There is this nostalgia for seaside towns but it’s not the 50s and 60s any more. Things have moved on but the Torquays and Paigntons of this world have not which is why they are in the sad state that they are now.

Fine words Gamboller and I wish I could holler ‘get yourself back here!’ but alas the Yorkshire Riviera’s towns have gone the way of Torquay et al et al. The Clock Cafe remains its saving grace, and the coast’s geomorphology of course: ditto Devon’s

Tank would fit right in with the locals if wearing that mask in Torquay
I use to take the boy to Torquay yearly but our trip to Brighton this years was miles better and worth the extra travelling.

Southport is going the same way. Lord Street used to be one of the most elegant in England. It is said to have been the inspiration for the boulevards in Napoleon III and Baron Haussmann’s reconstructed Paris. Now it looks shabby and downmarket.

Heartbreaking watching Newsnight and what is going on in Austria. Will admit to shedding a tear or two watching the Police stopping people in the street and asking to see their Covid passports.

It will happen here as well, sooner rather than later I think – as it’s always been on the agenda. The difference will be, I hope, that we will not comply so easily. I’ve
never been on any of the protest marches yet, not with my dodgy hip, but will certainly rethink that now. There will be a lot of blood on the streets here, I’m certain of that.

    God help us.

Until recently I kinda thought that I would comply eventually when it was made near impossible to do anything without a passport. The difference now is that I know someone who had the jab and is now dead.

A very fit fella about fifty years old but collapsed at home. The last photo that he posted on his facebook was of him propped up in a hospital bed. Looked like he would recover but died shortly afterwards and death put down to a tear in the heart.

More likely that than a reaction to the jab.

Possibly, possibly not. We do know that people have died because of having the vaccine, thousands. That might be a small number percentage-wise, but why risk it? It’s not like vaccinated people are protected against catching Covid or passing it on to others.

Vaccine passports make no sense at all, they are clearly just about control. It is abhorrent to think that unvaxxed should be treated like lepers. The vaxxed ones and especially those boosted up  may feel safer but they are not; they can still catch a cold, but most will be fine. How is it that people like myself who are old (Ish) and overweight (a bit more ish) and never wear a mask are walking around without a bother on them?

I know I’m wasting my time on this as nobody ever moves an inch. So that will be enough.. for now :bye:

Not everyone here disagrees with you Tank.

I am not hostile to the vaccine but whether or not to take it should be a matter of personal choice.

What I am opposed to is:
Anyone being dismissed from their job for not taking the vaccine
Children deciding to take the vaccine without the consent of their parents
    Vaccine passports
    Mandatory vaccination.

Johnson should show a bit of leadership and make a clear statement that his government will never legislate for mandatory vaccination.

It is worrying about Austria but I suspect the government there will have to back down. It looks to me like an attempt to bully people into having the vaccine because take up rates there have been low. It would not be a good look for the country to be throwing people into prison.

Very sad that so many people appear to have no problem with passports and mandatory vaccination. In effect saying their liberty depends on the whim of a government minister and the government owns their bodies. All for a virus with an infection fatality rate of 0.2%.

Then again, a recent opinion poll showed 42% were not in favour of passports. The government will be provoking a lot of people if it introduces them. I am still reasonably optimistic it will not happen.

It will not be popular here given the source but this is what Neil Oliver had to say about it:

Great post, CAS. I’ve always regarded you as one of the more sensible ones on here. That might not be saying much, mind

Shame that we haven’t got someone like Neil Oliver running the country.

Whilst the list of people who could do a better job of running the country is quite long, Neil Oliver is not on it. The government does at least enlist the services of doctors and scientists.

It’s very easy for an archaeologist who used to present pretty documentaries about cliffs to sit there on the sidelines ranting on a channel nobody watches but I don’t think it would work in real life.

Richard, would you like to actually address the points he makes in his argument? You are better than making ad hominem attacks.

Tank – thank you, sir. Not sure if many people would agree with you!

I wish some of the people worried about personal freedoms would look more closely at what this government is planning to do to the legal system. And don’t get me started on their plans for the NHS….
