Bristol de Mai is a solid 6’s on the machine ‘Middle of March.Even if this ‘Alary’ is a class horse he still has to give 8lb to what is a proper class horse in our fellow and I doubt he can do it myself.

If he’s a viable gold up contender that genuinely stayed with Thistlecrack the other day as Tizz said, he surely has to win despite the rise.

Our fellow is good but is he a gold cup horse? Not really.

So if Alary is as good as the hype, he’ll win. I simply don’t expect him to be that good though. 2 wins in 20 is a stat that I can’t get past.

6s will do me then. Cheers.

As a side note, I came across you on Twitter the other day after I saw TRF had a Twitter account.

Otago Trail for me here. I don’t think Alary can cope with his weight and I cannot see Definitely Red win again with his current mark. Bristol de Mai should be the big danger.

Yes I’m on Twitter pal are you?..Just looked at the machine and like others say ‘Definitely Red’ is fav now and yet to this judge Bristol de Mai should be.We’re 7lb better off for actually beating him and we’ll have come on again for the experience. The big Grey has far more scope than anything in this so I’ve taken the 6’s tonight for another £50.Confidence is King!

Alary for me. This is probably the best example of a horse I wouldn’t normally back as I don’t particularly like it’s profile, but I am willing to surrender my views and follow Tizzard blindly on this one. Bullish comments and GC entry should see him winning this if all stacks up. If he was 11/10 I wouldn’t bother but at 4/1 I will.

As MoM says, if the reports of Alary hunting up Thistlecrack on the gallops are accurate, he’ll win this. No superstars among the opposition

Did Tizzard or Tom not say though that Thistlecrack doesn’t do a lot at home or am I dreaming that one up….?

I think they key here is CT’s fitness routine (for his horses)

Alary had a busy autumn in France culminating in a half length defeat in their equivalent of the King George on November 6th. He moved to Tizz on December 20th and you have to assume he was still fairly fit. Yet, according to the trainer, he could not cope with hill gallop.

Stretching the assumption further, how fit was he in that final French race?

It’ll be fascinating to see how he does rated just 5lbs below the GC 2nd fav, Native River. A tough task on the face of it off 163 and it’s been 20 years since a horse won this off that kind of rating (I don’t know how many have run).

Here’s a comment from G Delamere on Alary in this race:

It is interesting that three former winners – Little Owl,The Thinker and Jodami – won the Gold Cup less than two months later and another, Bregawn, the following year. Placed in France’s two most important chases, Alary’s reputation hasn’t diminished since his arrival, partly due to home work with Thistlecrack. Top weight has been carried successfully and plenty of former winners were rated 160+, although not since 1997.

    Yeah pal

I’ll like your latest tweet so you know who I am.

    6/1 is a big price

In fact all three of the principles are at decent prices in my view.

I’ve had £50 at 5/1 on Bristol de Mai the class horse in the race,I would normally have a £100 but the vibe for this French chestnut called ‘Alary’ (who I’m told is named that because its Latin for ‘Flying Wings’,well he hasn’t left the ground yet) is big, mines getting weight from this so called wonder horse from France who’s never jumped a fence like those at Haydock in his previous 20 outings…How can a horse who’s achieved virtually nothing be giving weight to a horse like ‘Bristol’ who has achieved plenty??All I know is a class horse doesn’t take 20 runs to show his true colours so I’m not falling for all the hype surrounding Tizzards 4th Gold Cup member.

    :good:
I’m with you Gord, Bristol De Mai all the way :good:
He’s my star horse in the 10 to follow so hoping he’ll go one better than his last two runs and be all set for Cheltenham..Jac :rose:

I’m firmly in the Bristol De Mai camp in here. I’ve been a fan for
a good while now, although he cost me dear in the JLT at the Festival and latterly
in the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle. I think when he’s in a rhythm he’s going to be
hard to peg back, he does occasionally get one or two wrong and loses momentum, but
with a clear jumping round I think this is his for the winning. I missed the 6s taken
by a few, but I’m happy enough with 5/1.

Hard to know what to make of Alary, he could be anything, but he’s way too short for
me at 9/2 running in a competitive handicap, in a completely new sphere for him.
Tizzard seems to think he’s the second coming, that remains to be seen. I’m more
worried about Sausalito Sunrise, he’s been dropped to a winning mark and
could run a decent race. I think he’s now better at further than this, but the ground
will compensate, so I’m taking him e/w at 12/1 as well. It would make a nice forecast :good:

I fail to see where all this enthusiam for Bristol De Mai is coming from?????? Last time out he was beaten 3 lengths by Otago Trail having beaten the same horse no less than 42 lengths last January. He should have been fully fit in his last race having raced a few weeks earlier. To me he is on a downward curve, or am I missing something here?????? When Colin Tizzard makes bullish comments about his horses I will be backing them. According to CT he has improved the fitness of Alary since his arrival, he may well be adopting the training techniques of Michael Dickinson which was interval training and working the horses uphill. Alary looks the value in a race where everything else looks fully exposed.

Oops! Just saw Alary jumping on ITV4 – they showed the last two fences in France and, on that evidence, he’s the most stiff-backed chaser I’ve ever seen – very unusual for French types who are usually jumping round loose schools from two years old.

Unless those jumps were not his usual style he’ll be in trouble in Britain. His best hope would be that somehow the Tizzards have schooled him out of it although he’s awful long in the tooth for that to happen. I’m not only much less confident about today…I am afraid :)

I just watched the footage too Joe, I think your take on his jumping is spot on, I wasn’t
at all impressed. Unless, as you say, CT has managed to improve his jumping style, and that’s
a big ask, then he could have problems in a tough handicap. I also noticed, in the race shown,
that he ran well away from the rest of the field, does he like to be on his own?, he won’t get
that luxury today. He may turn out to be the real deal as Tizz alludes to, but as I mentioned
before, to many unknowns for me.

I’m not sure that you can draw too many conclusions from Bristol De Mai’s race against Otago Trail at
Haydock last January SP, and his recent run in the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle. It’s absolutely true
that BDM had OT miles back at Haydock, but OT clouted one in that and got detached shortly after, so
I don’t think was his true running. You have to consider that BDM was also getting 7lbs from OT at
Haydock, in the Rehearsal Chase that was reversed with BDM having to give OT 8lbs. That’s a turn
round of 15lbs in OT’s favour. I mentioned in my piece about BDM that he can on occasions get it
wrong at a couple, and it can stop his momentum, he did just that at Newcastle, but nonetheless
kept on well. I don’t think he’s on the down turn, he’s not been out of the first 2 in his last
10 races. I have to admit I’m defending him as I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for him, but I think
he’s competed in top races, and shown a great attitude. I hope he manages to have a good jumping
round today, if he does I’m very keen on his chances. Good luck with Alary, if Tizz has worked his
magic with him, he could be very good.
