Agree with what royal falcon has just said; I’ve only watched the replay once and have no desire to see it again for that reason.

I don’t believe for a second Lydia is attacking a "soft target" in Sam Thomas just because she’s "a name". Come on ffs, all she’s done is give her opinion. She’s never come across that way at all, ever. Quite unfair, IMO.
Though I can’t find the article, I thought she was particularly ‘unfair’ when calling for Kieren Fallon’s head when his fortunes were at their lowest ebb.
Good journalist she may be, omniscient she most definitely isn’t.January 15, 2010 at 13:03 #270035Let’s face it, Lydia usually calls it as Steve Mellish sees it.

Yes that is a fact! Excellent team, those two together,i often see a little glint in Lydias eye when they make eye contact! Now if Lydia fancies Steve Mellish for his looks, then she will fancy me for my "Form"!

Lydias tone of voice suggests Fist would get a fisting if she met him!

Apologies for heading off at a bit of a tangent. Having watched the race replay, I could not see what Sam Thomas did so wrong? I was more concerned about the fall and horse fatality in the race. I thought the horse appeared to slip on snow lying near the rail? Am I wrong? It was an horrific fall and could have easily been a rider fatality too.
I had no idea that horse had been fataly injured but happened so fast I have no idea of the cause. Sad news

You’re lucky I’m not Lydia..boy would she have a field day with you.

Held up means held up whether it be in 2nd, 12th or 22nd.
In a bumper race where most horse badly need a run and no more than 4 or 5 have a serious chance of even going the pace you don’t hold them up in the rear as you could end up being 60 lengths behind the leader. You treat it as what it really is………..a 4 or 5 horse race.
The first time Sam rode him he dropped him in about 6 lengths behind the leaders (Held up i ntouch as the form book says). He made his effort 2f out.
He Held him up in last place 2 days ago but was never more than a few lengths of the leader as it was a slow pace.
As I said in 3 of his 4 races the horse has now been held up and obviously they feel that is the best way to ride him.
I’ve always thought you had a strange interpretation of the form book Fist; you’ve just confirmed it.

Held up in second.

If second is "held up", then please explain what "raced prominently" means?
Three races.
In the two races he placed the horse raced prominently.
In the one race he was unplaced, he was held up. FACT.
NOT as you made out in your first post Fist.
It’s not Lydia that should give the apology to Sam, it’s…. (fill in the blanks).Held up in touch (imo) could mean raced fourth or fifth (in a reasonable sized field) not too far faway from the leader.
I have never heard any analysis or commentator say "held up in second".
Don’t talk silly Ginger thousands of horses have been held up behind the leader and not produced until after the last hurdle fence 100 yds.
January 15, 2010 at 14:05 #270045totally embarrased a winning Grand National jockey in front of millions of viewers.
Please explain for those who missed this.
Still awaiting clarity on this particular point, Fist.
This is reaching Michael Howard proportions.

Are you thinking what we’re thinking?
January 15, 2010 at 14:27 #270049Lydia,has just confirmed for me,what has niggled me for nearly 2 years, that it was her that "Waxed lyrical" about him after he won at Cheltenham earlier that season, she was the first person to suggest Albertas run was an RSA horse at the time!TAPK snaffled the 20"s like a pig with truffles! cheers Lydia!x
I"m sure i mentioned this in a post at the time i was looking at Albertas as a Gold Cup horse!!!January 15, 2010 at 15:25 #270059Using Fist’s logic, it would seem therefore that, regardless of a horse’s position in a race, the keywords are ‘held’ and ‘up’. Even a horse leading the rest of the field could still be described as ‘held-up’, i.e. held-up in first place.

Have you never heard someone say a horse was held up from the front? Get out more Ken.
Ginger quotes prominent like it means a horse wasn’t held up. That is nonsense in many cases.
Did Sam Thomas hold up Denman for a circuit a few lengths behind Neptune or was I watching another race.
Was Hurricane Fly being held up in 3rd 2-4 lengths behind the leader last season when he beat Go Native or maybe you think he’s not a hold up horse.
Willie Carson was brilliant at holding horses up from the front.
Absolute nonsense post from a man wielding a wooden spoon.
I could understand if the horse in question had been ridden prominently but Sam deliberately dropped him in. As Lydia pointed out on radio he could have taken a more prominent position and held him up just behind the leaders.
Jockey very often find themselves in front on a hold up horse because nothing else wants to go on. They don’t go tearing off they simply ride a waiting race from the front (hold him up)
Anyway nothing else to say on a ridiculous subject. Feel like a teachers in a race riding tactics school.
January 15, 2010 at 16:39 #270075January 15, 2010 at 16:54 #270081Denman was, as you put it yourself Fist, "dropped in".
It depends on a person’s interpretation of "held up".
I wouldn’t have considered him to have been held up.
Who really cares wether a the Racing Post comments say "held up" or "prominent" anyway. Most of the people here can read a race for themselves.January 15, 2010 at 17:12 #270084January 15, 2010 at 17:24 #270087Which one was "George Murray"?
