I see they showed a clip of Prolan earlier this week on Channel 4. Does anyone know how much old footage exists – I am thinking particularly about 60’s and 70’s. The recent footage doesn’t do a lot for me but I love to see some of the old races in their entirity. Golden Cygnet’s win is one that springs to mind. I guess if the footage does exist nobody would think it was commercially viable to put together DVD’s. Shame if that is the case.

The great "what could’ve been"
Interesting to hear Edward O’Grady on RUK yesterday say that he thought the manner of Hurricane Fly’s win at Leopardstown reminded him of Golden Cygnet.
March 12, 2009 at 16:43 #215640In the Cheltenham shop they have a DVD of great Gold Cups – not 100% sure what specific races are on it though

March 12, 2009 at 18:05 #215686You Tube caters quite well for Cheltenham nostalgia.
Some super footage of bygone Champion Hurdles and Gold Cups on there.

March 12, 2009 at 20:25 #215719BBC’s Cheltenham archive goes back to 1958 with all the live races they have broadcast from the festival still in the archives though much of the linking material is missing.
Early races are only available on 16mm telerecordings, starting sporadically in 1968 some are on videotape. First color coverage of Cheltenham was in 1970 and from then on all of the races exist on VT.
One of my hobbies and interests is archive television, hence why the other day I was asking if anyone had any old ITV 7’s on any format.
Back in the UK, I have the entire 1982 and 1983 Cheltenham Festival with before and after idents and links on VHS. Even with something that recent, I have more of the broadcast material in my archive than BBC Sport currently has.

Do you know how many times Golden Cygnet had run prior to the Scottish Champion and were they racing off levels? Hurricane Fly has a long way to go to come anywhere near that level.

He did get up after the fall and he was just thought to be a bit sore and shaken by the vet. O’Grady wasn’t happy with him though and he sent him to the vetinary unit at the university in Edinburgh to monitor him for a few days. It was only the Tuesday after the race that his condition deteriorated and he sadly had to be put to sleep.

The wikipedia article (I know, hardly the most reliable source!) on Golden Cygnet is quite comprehensive and should hopefully provide you with all the answers you need.

Obviously Hurricane Fly hasn’t done anything yet that compares to this fellow but I just thought it was very interesting that Edward O’Grady was making the comparison.

Thanks, very informative, I had no idea they had tried him on the Flat before he went hurdling. It seems to indicate that even the best of horses can throw in the odd sub-standard performance.
March 14, 2009 at 01:26 #216169great to see a fuller version of Golden cygnets chetenham win. I’d love to see some of the Gold cups in full, rather than just the last few furlongs; seeing how the race develops, who made the pace etc; Captain Christy, Nortons Coin were two of my favourite races
January 9, 2016 at 10:22 #1228967Loved seeing the old clips of Lanzarote this morning. Shame we only see these once in a while and it is only ever a few seconds.
At the moment there must be plenty of these clips out there just gathering dust. Would it ever be feasible to upload them and then make a small charge to download them?
January 10, 2016 at 09:50 #1229142There are some older ones on the Pathe site. most of the Derbies and other classics, Grand National etc from the 1900s to around 1970.
There are quite a few races on YouTube but the quality is variable.January 10, 2016 at 21:01 #1229177Good thread.
Who owns the rights to the footage?
Does a historic vault even exist?Even certain Cheltenham festival races are nowhere in public to be found.
The course itself had no answer to this either.
Thanks.January 10, 2016 at 21:27 #1229178From what I can find on the Racetech site, the first camera patrol film began operating in 1966, so there could be an awful lot of fantastic races sitting in their archives.
I see they’ve had CAA approval for Drone use in race coverage. I know that some don’t care for aerial footage, but I like it both from the different perspective and the fact that it’s very informative. I look forward to seeing what they come up with.
January 10, 2016 at 21:46 #1229181Excellent steeplechasing.
The race I really want to see is the 1981 County Hurdle, who do you think if anyone would have that in an archive?January 10, 2016 at 21:57 #1229183Viltash, looks like Racetech would sell you a DVD of it for £40 – depends how much you want it!
Only other avenue I can think of would be contacting connections of the winner, who will probably have been given complimentary video tapes
