I always feel that British (and Irish) racing is pretty poor when it comes to it’s history.

With the exception of the Grand National (and to a lesser extent the Classics, Champion Hurdle & Cheltenham Gold Cup) there is very little reference to racing’s rich history. In fact if it wasn’t for the likes of TRF’s very own espmadrid and Eddie Cr on Youtube there would be nowhere for racing fans to go looking for some of those historic names from the 80’s, 70s and late 60s.

Don’t know about Racetech but most of the big races of the 70s/80s/90s (60s would be more sketchy as many tapes were wiped) would have been covered by either BBC, ITV or CH4. Presumably RTE also has an archive of the major Irish Races.

As I presume the racecourse own the rights, it would be great to access a channel (maybe via YouTube) to access some of these old races.

I love watching the likes of sea pigeon against monksfield and on the flat generous winning the Irish Derby in superb style.

Katie makes a good point, it is one thing discussing these great horses but how much better would it be to see them in action. If it is there why deprive the racing fan?

As a result of Steeplechasing’s post I contacted Racetech. It appears that they have nothing for the Cheltenham Festival prior to 1979 and only Grand Nationals for Aintree before 1978. They said they could try and get hold of earlier races and I am awaiting a reply regarding cost. I am guessing it might well be too much for anyone other than a millionaire. Also contacted Cheltenham Racecourse but don’t hold out too many hopes.

Had a look at Pathe and there isn’t that much on there for the period in question. Did watch a couple of clips from the 60’s with Lester Piggott seemingly not at his best on Ribofilio.

I had a list of 10 or so races from Cheltenham festivals from the early to mid 80s which I didn’t have. I deliberately chose races that would have been televised, but no luck.

Apparently they only have full meetings from 2009 onwards.

Surprisingly their archive is very limited, in fact I think I probably have more races in my archive than they do.

The only hope of seeing these old races is from personal archives or the broadcaster – BBC/ITV – making them available for download sometime in the distant future if and when they can find a cost effective way of digitising their old tapes and uploading them.

....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.

    That’s a very depressing thought.

Notice at least two part-races from Racetech’s earliest year are up in the shape of Pollardstown and Casbah.

There is also some footage of Golden Cygnet – both at the Festival and in Ireland – from the previous year. Interesting to know where that came from.

In the early 70’s which Festival races did the BBC show? Did they recap the non-televised races as they do now?

Only the first four races each day. It’s possible they may have shown the closing stages of the remaining two races the following day, but I can’t remember this happening.

There certainly wasn’t an evening highlights programme until 1980 and even then race coverage was only the closing stages apart from the main race of the day.

....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.
