Buick has just blamed the ground and said the last furlong was a long one for her – didn’t say she was unbalanced down the hill but said she needs good fast ground and probably 10f

i backed the second and thought just the size of the winner intimidated her, maybe it was the TV that made her look so much bigger or at 66 my eyes have finally packed up. Well done Mike by the way

Having watched the replay I do think Lordon actually rode to win the race, which hasn’t always been the case with some of the second string horses being given what some might say weresympathetic finishing rides in the past.

I think Minnie Hauk is the better horse and considering this was just her 4th lifetime start and her first run in any kind of group company compared to Whirl who was having her 7th run and her 4th run in group company, I expect there is still more improvement to come from the winner.

I felt he rode her to win until about the final furlong. As I say the fact you can even find yourself asking the question is a problem.

How many are asking that question this time though?

Your eyes don’t deceive you nwalton.

When ITV showed the fillies in the paddock, it was obvious how Whirl was one of the worst looking of the whole field. Lacking physical scope. Whereas Minnie Hauk was the opposite. Not in Desert Flower’s class visually, but one that should carry on improving a good while yet.

Although I believe the best filly did not win today, in future races I think Minnie Hauk is going to improve past Whirl. Whereas Whirl will do well to maintain her rating (maintain normal physical progression).

I think it’s obvious Ballydoyle mistakenly thought Whirl was the lesser of the 3 fillies and so used her as a pacemaker. Lordan went too quick on her to the top of the hill and didn’t attempt to get much of a breather in.
If you reverse the rides the front 2 got, I think Whirl wins by a couple of lengths.

Moore also had the whip in the wrong hand and I think he loses that in the stewards room had the 2nd been different connections.

He was slow away and rode her from the start to get to the front and then he dictated his own fractions as he was left alone up front – the fact that they both drew clear of the rest of the field up the straight suggests that overall he gave her a good ride pace wise.

    Here are the sectionals https://www.racingtv.com/results/2025-06-06/epsom-downs/1600

Moore did have his whip in the wrong hand but did put it down as she drifted left, Whirl also came slightly off the rail when there was brief contact but it wasn’t enough to alter the result as Moore said she went again as Whirl came back at her.

Moore specifically said that she was green when she hit the front, I think Whirl is by far the more professional of the two horses but she isn’t the best horse.

I agree it seems as though Lordan’s judgement of pace was pretty good (as it usually is when racing prominently). However, he is imo one of the weakest in a finish and not a “Group 1” jockey.

Can’t say I would disagree with that statement as he wouldn’t be on that next level list of jockeys I would look to employ if all the top guys were unavailable.

It was a very tight finish and to me whirl wasn’t finding in the last half furlong where the winner was.All about how you see it. I’m sure we will find out who the best filly is soon enough. One will probably go irish oaks and one to royal ascot. Desert flower was never going after they entered the straight just ran on gamely but well beaten. Giselle ran well and it will be interesting to see her somewhere like the Yorkshire oaks on a flat track where her stride can be put to good use.

Theyll be kept apart now but whirl most certainly would have won, both jockeys only used the whip roughly the same amount but whirl certainly was responding better for each tap, whereas MH regressed for the taps, hence why ryan only used so few but Why did lordan use so few as she was certainly responding to them?

Dont buy the inclination that the fav will improve past whirl either.

Whirl has improved with each run (as has the fav) so dont buy the idea she will hit a ceiling anytime soon either (thankfully this will be put to the test before seasons send) but i fully expect whirl to have as many group 1s as MH if shes given the chance to, which her performance today should allow for her to be

“Dont buy the inclination that the fav will improve past whirl either.”

I think that will happen. It was only the winner’s 4th start and a first group race.
