    Flotus @ 16/1

Looked quite a fast 2YO last year and seems to of progressed a bit this year. It looked a very poor first run of the year but it turned out she headbutted the stalls a few times and smashed her face in as the stalls were about to open, so sounds like a valid excuse.

Her second run was better but again it never looked the greatest race in the world and she looked all over the winner, but just got pipped on the line. As it turns out it was not a bad run at all seen as the winner of that appears to be very smart indeed.

She redeemed herself when beat just under 2 lengths into 3rd at Ascot yet surprisingly she was taken out of the July Cup and only has 5F entries as of now.

Can’t wait to see her blast off from the front over 5F and that race at Goodwood looks an ideal opportunity, so hopefully she can make a big impression in what looks a weak enough division, now the Aussie horse has headed back home.

    Twilight Calls 15-2 ew.

No Nature Strip to worry about. Trainer says he’s sticking to 5f.

After completely messing up with him in The Chipchase, I’ll have a small early bet on Ainsdale EW. Like to bet a loud one in this, though I suspect I’d he does make it, I could probably match these odds with better EW terms on the day.

Romantic Proposal and Little Big Bear would be my more conservative fancies right now.

Royal Aclaim was very good today but the reaction for me is OTT. He’s won very easily but the next 4 home are good handicappers, not saying he can’t win a Nunthorpe, especially as the division looks so weak, but he’s priced up like he’s beaten genuine group horses here and he simply hasn’t.

I’d argue there aren’t any genuine group performers likely to run

All the best European 5f horses are basically high quality handicappers

I do sort of agree FF its a really weak division but I’m not talking subjectively about these horses she (didn’t realise she was a she before) beat – the 4 of them have run in 19 stakes races between them and won 0. Korker you’d maybe give the benefit of the doubt to as he’s a 3YO and could improve but Mondammej has been beaten much further by Khaadem as an example already this season in the Palace House, he literally hasn’t won a race since running in a handicap at Wolverhampton off 97 in November. The time from the Racing Post (TS) was really ordinary as well if times are your thing, 2nd worst time performance on the card, appreciate she was winning hard held but she wasn’t going to post a decent figure regardless. I can see her going off really short on the day.

I do agree that she was likely flattered with winter power and cattura running poorly

But she has had only 3 starts and is improving significantly each run

And the highest rated horses in the Nunthorpe (other than golden pal) are emaraaty Ana and winter power on 114 who are both struggling badly she really won’t need to be a superstar to win this

You see horses of these ratings contesting group 3s in the other divisions not group 1s

Visually impressive and value for more than the official winning margin. But in terms of the Nunthorpe, it will have to be a moderate renewal (maybe it will be?) for that level of form to be good enough. But maybe she will continue to improve.

Royal Aclaim has an OR of 108 and even allowing for the 3lb gender allowance, it’s a terrible Nunthorpe if that sets the bar for deserved favouritism.

This is probably the worst Nunthorpe I can recall in a long time!
Genuine top class sprinters are rare and unlike other distances the difference between a top handicapper and group horse over these trips isn’t as great as many would imagine.
What singles them out is their performance over an optimum trip on preferred underfoot conditions, this is what I like to look for plus having the numbers to back up the run.
I believe the ground will be everything in this race so would advise holding fire and waiting for just the right balance.
    good luck to all

The two year old has to carry 8 stone.
Is very fast. If she breaks well she wins
going could be a concern as not ran on anything other than decent ground
if its not soft I’ll be playing her

I can’t dispute the progressive natural of the numbers she’s recorded the last twice but the moderate run at Ascot is concerning because as you say Nathan this filly is all about blistering speed from the gate.
Other than decent ground will be an unknown but I must also express some doubt over the opponents beaten who don’t seem at a quick look to have set the world on fire.
Whatever you choose to do I wish you the best.
    good luck to all

7mm of rain is forecast on Thursday night according to a weather site I just looked at. If it arrives that will be against the 2 year old.

It is lacking a top class sprinter but its a funny race anyway, it wasn’t so long ago that Alpha Delphini won it against Blue Point & Battaash. Any Group 1 that can throw up 2x 40/1 winners in the space of 10 years is one where it doesn’t matter if there is class in the race, anything can happen.
