Time to get back on it, and as usual, my season will run from Royal Ascot to Punchestown.
If I can have a fraction of last season’s winners, I’ll be happy. Been more or less off it since April, and my only bet since then was Euchen Glen last month.
Be usual approach this year of trying to keep it to bigger prices, and main concern is to keep number of selections as sensible as possible, to not bet on races for the sake of it, and to (try to) reign in the Anteposts. Famous last words. Best example is The Hunt Cup this week. One of my favourite races of the year, but no fancy this year, so no bet. The trick will be trying to remain disciplined with this.
Looking ahead, not too many Anteposts on the go, but got a few in mind. On the Flat, I’ve been really impressed by Trustyourinstinct, and think he should be decent, while Biggles looks like he could be a staple of mine in the bigger handicaps. Last but not least, and very predictable, but I’ll be betting Euchen Glen for The Ebor if he gets an entry.
Over the jumps, I fancy Kilcruit for everything, while I like Herbiers for The Paddy Power Gold Cup, and Midnight River for The Coral Gold Cup.
First things first though, and Berkshire Shadow, having been one of those I kicked off with last year, makes the day one list again. He got me my money back in running last year, and hopefully same again.
Desert Cop is a lot riskier, but I’m hoping the 5f will make a difference, and I’m at least hoping for a run for my money. I’ve taken the 100’s just now, and I’ll obviously have some EW around those odds.
Buckaroo probably my most sensible selection of the day, and I thought 7’s was fair, while Tritonic looks a little too big to leave alone.
Queen Anne – Berkshire Shadow 33’s
Kings Stand – Desert Cop EW 6pls/100’s
Ascot Stakes – Tritonic EW 7pls
Wolferton – Buckaroo 7’sJune 19, 2023 at 20:07 #1652044Deleted Bets………
Galtres – Cloudbreaker
Mallard – WickywickyWheels
King George – Iroko (cashed out, small loss)
Gloucester Chase – Midnight Our FredJune 21, 2023 at 01:51 #1652437Starting off with Desert Cop getting the EW returns was as good as I could hope for on Day One. Really can’t argue with a return at 80’s on first day.
Add to that Tritonic at the 25’s, and happy all round.
Few bets on Day Two, but no massive fancies, and all on race threads. Still getting used to the idea of no bet in The Hunt Cup. No doubt I’ll buckle.
Queen Mary – Midnight Affair 9 EW6/10’s
Kensington Palace – Yerwanthere 11-2
Duke Cambridge – Random Harvest 25EW
Windsor Castle – Big Evs 50’s EW 5plsJune 21, 2023 at 22:42 #1652712Probably best start I’ve had in some time, really chuffed.
Yerwanthere should have won I reckon, and Random Harvest got the EW money at the 25’s, and she was so close.
Obviously made up with Big Evs. Not just the odds, but the manner of the win, unbelievable.
Just the two tomorrow. At this stage (it’ll no doubt change), I’ve got nothing on Friday, so a bit more on this pair.
Ribblesdale – Midnight Mile EW 4pls
Buckingham Palace – Biggles 14’sJune 22, 2023 at 08:58 #1652741Just caught up with this VtC! What a spectacular start to your season. I shall follow your selections with interest. You have set yourself a high bar! Good luck in the coming weeks.
June 23, 2023 at 23:51 #1653226Thanks Sungold, yeah, unreal start really, and got to be happy.
Pleased to have sat out Friday, and bit more selections Saturday as a result. This is exactly the scenario I wanted to avoid, too many selections on the one day, but after the week I’ve had, I’m a bit more comfortable with it.
Ascot selections all on race threads. Hoping that Hot Fuss can be bet at bigger odds again, while the 33’s on Grand Alliance is unlikely to avoid a fair old Rule 4
Other selections elsewhere too. Euchen Glen has obviously been bet, and I was going to mention that I’d bet him, without listing him, as he verging towards a sentimental selection. However, I think he looks as good as ever, and if he wants to go for Ebor, which I think he will, then he has to go close here, with his mark slipping
Single is a horse that always interested me, while Man Of The House looked too big at Perth.
Chesham – Hot Fuss EW4/80’s
1452 Perth – Man Of The House 8’s
1459 Ayr – Euchen Glen 8’s
1517 Newmarket – Single 8’s
Jubilee – Rohaan
Hardwicke – Grand Alliance 33’s EW
Wokingham – Bielsa 20’s, 18’s EW 8plsJune 30, 2023 at 02:49 #1653884Nothing doing Saturday then, but Hot Fuss got knocked in running, and agonisingly finished fifth. He was biggest bet of the day, so very frustrating.
Euchen Glen would’ve been money back in running later in season, but he was a smaller bet. Hoping he can still sneak into The Ebor. Bielsa shaped well, and certainly on my radar for The Stewards Cup.
Can’t complain though, had a great Ascot, and best start to a season for a few years.
Got a couple tomorrow who I thought were too big at 25’s, in Roxboro Road and Capuchinero
1505 Cartmel – Roxboro Road EW 4/25’s
1805 Curragh – Capuchinero 25’s EW 6plsJuly 1, 2023 at 12:06 #1653998Unlike Euchen the other day, I had to lay off Roxboro Road, as I had kind of went for it with him. He went as low as he could, and a decent return off him. He emptied quickly again, but have to keep him in mind for when he’s a price.
Capuchinero really disappointed me.
Few bets today, and added one late on for The Plate.
Chipchase – Judicial 22’s EW
Plate – Mountain Road 33’s EW 7pls
Plate – Sir Chauvelin EW 7pls, 66’s
1740 Curragh – Newfoundland 9-2July 2, 2023 at 15:10 #1654186Knew my fate with Judicial when he went 33’s before the off, but pleasantly surprised by the run of Sir Chauvelin
Summer Cup – Fidux 22’s EW 6pls
July 4, 2023 at 01:33 #1654364Decent run that from Fidux. Last minute bet, so not the biggest bet by any stretch, but happy enough with the EW
Really really good racing today, and got a few bets on the go, but the one that really jumps out is Alpha Male at Tipperary.
Bang there last time, when made a mistake at crucial stage. Few pounds lower here, and decent jockey taking five off. Definitely happy to go with him, especially with BOG.
1635 Tipperary – Alpha Male 33’s EW 5pls
July 4, 2023 at 10:31 #1654374Well done with Big EVs, Vtc
Just catching up from a week in Majorca thanks to Galopin des Champs..
I’m also on Ballyburn had a big bet on any race at 6s and have chipped away at the BallymoreGood luck with the thread 😃
Blackbeard to conquer the World
July 8, 2023 at 00:07 #1654642Many thanks Nath, yeah, he was a decent one alright, looking forward to see if he can progress next time.
Hope you enjoyed your time in the sun, and I hope Ballyburn does us proud.
Some familiar faces today, and Euchen Glen is hardly a surprise, as is Fiveaftermidnight.
As I’ve already mentioned couple of times, Euchen needs this to have a hope of getting in Ebor (assuming he’s still good enough, which I think he is), and I topped up my Antepost. Fiveaftermidnight I’ve started with at 28’s, but id love to see her drift. Touch and go, but can see her supported. Watching the market with her, but I’ll top up if I can.
Escobar looking big at 20’s at Sandown, while I missed the 16’s on Midnight Lion by seconds at Haydock, but currently considering the 12’s. I’ll maybe bet one of them, but can’t see both, as I’ve already bet Our Bobby at Bellewstown, and trying to be careful. Maybe both candidates for in running.
Old Newton – Euchen Glen 22’s EW 5pls
1930 Bellewstown – Our Bobby 5’s
July 13, 2023 at 01:59 #1655139Nice win from Our Bobby on Saturday, but slightly annoyed at not topping up the 5’s, when 9’s was freely available in the lead up.
Looking for a reverse of that today, having taken 8’s for Good Karma, and as low as 4’s now. Like what I’ve seen of this horse, and on at 40’s for The Golden Mile. Expecting a decent run. Not always a fan of betting horses I’ve already bet Antepost, but missed a few winners that way, so happy to have him at these odds today Non Runner
Very keen on Desert Cop earlier on the card, but stablemate Frankness also interesting. Swaying towards Desert Cop right now, but not certain.
At Carlisle I thought Happier had a better chance than her current 8’s, and happy to give her a go
Old favourite Suprise Package out tonight after a long layoff, and hoping to see that ability is retained
1525 Carlisle – Happier 8’s
July 14, 2023 at 02:10 #1655254Was quite happy with the run of Happier, but still annoying, as I was only betting because of Good Karma, who ended up a Non Runner
Few today, covered in Big Races
B365 Handicap – Killybegs Warrior 25’s
Falmouth – Astral Beau EW 4pls/28’s
Kilbeggan – Ilikedwayurthinkin 11’s
Kilbeggan- The Dabbler 22’sJuly 14, 2023 at 14:37 #1655323I had a look in here a minute ago and Bingo! VtC had bagged a 25-1 winner. I watched the race. Nothing was going to pass Killibegs Warrior – ground out the win under pressure. Brilliant selection, VtC!
July 14, 2023 at 22:12 #1655394Thanks Sungold, enjoyed that, and great attitude from him. Chuffed with Astral Beau as well, who I nicked 40’s EW on. Smashing day that.
Most of these already covered in Big Races, but got a few others on the radar.
Stay Local is around 4’s at Navan. Really like him in this, but a lot will depend on me having any luck tomorrow, and also whether he’s still around 4’s.
Hamilton is my local track, and my record ain’t great there, but quite interested in the Menzies pair, Rajmeister, and Precedent. Again, it’ll depend on how I do earlier.
John Smiths Cup – Faylak EW 7pls/33’s
Superlative – Quatre Bras 33’s EW
Bunbury Cup – Biggles 25’sJuly 16, 2023 at 06:56 #1655576Biggles! That’s another phenomenal antepost success at 25s. How long ago did you select Biggles, VtC? I am not sure that there is any current parallel to this ability to recognise a horse’s capability combined with a knowledge of which future race it might be aimed at. Marvellous. (I didn’t back it as other selections with longer odds appealed).
