I don’t mean the sires were too slow for the Flat (you don’t get to go to stud at all unless you were decent usually) I just meant their progeny were.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 8, 2013 at 16:44 #454140I do hope that nobody on here thinks that I’m the type to cheer if a horse falls! But it’s all part of the game and of course good to see the horse and jockey escape unscathed- as most do.

Does the OP "jumps fan" not realise that jump races have been going on all through the summer.
Did you not bother to look at the links? Summer jumps are fine but I look forward to November time when we see the cream of these beasts coming back from their summer break.
October 8, 2013 at 18:24 #454152Apart from the public training, doesn’t the NH season start on the 11th March 2014?

Never Mr. P..I think Paul was making a point about some sad person who had too many drinks and obviously backed the horse that benefited from the others demise.
You’re obviously passionate about National Hunt including the welfare of the horses and jockeys and others like myself, although still taking an interest in the NH prefer the Flat. It would be a pretty boring Forum if we all agreed.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...October 8, 2013 at 20:41 #454175I used to look forward to this Saturdays Chepstow card eagerly as it was always the first proper days jumping on the TV. There was the 4yo handicap hurdle plus I think it was the Mercedes Benz handicap chase now it is just a bog standard non televised Saturday fixture.

I didn’t think that at all – I would be surprised, and very disappointed, if any of the regulars here would think such a thing.
October 8, 2013 at 21:41 #454186I consider myself lucky that I love the Flat AND the jumps

I miss the old days when both codes had more defined beginnings and endings to their respective seasons. That said, in essence the same meetings still herald the start of each season "proper" and I have fond memories of both codes stretching back 20 years now.
Overall I do have a slight preference for the Flat (the international scene and the breeding/bloodstock elements just give it that more depth for me) but honestly I’m happy all year round.
To be honest I get annoyed by the tribal nature of some hardcore jumps or Flat fans who feel they have to continually slate the code they favour least – OK a bit of jesting is fine but I’d rather any racing than none at all.

Sorry Paul I feel that I shouldn’t have quoted your story in answering Mr. P’s question above
I think it was aimed at all of us not you personally, and we all know that neither of you would do such a thing, your story highlighted a sad lack of respect by fairweather racegoers for the sport.I used to love the jumps being a great fan of Desert Orchid, but we have lost so many like One Man, Rooster Booster, Best Mate and the final nail for me the beautiful Synchronised amongst many others both on the Flat and NH all loved and missed.
That’s just a personal view and why I don’t take a great interest in NH these days.

A wrongly convicted horse must try to survive a public execution gauntlet staged as a game show.I can’t wait

I have to admit, as I get older, I find it more and more difficult when we lose horses in action.
I know it is part of the inherent risks in the sport and that safety changes now result in fewer fatalities / serious injuries however it still hurts.
I also believe that because fatalities are fewer, that when they do happen it hits harder and there do seem to have been more "high profile" casualties in the last couple of seasons – that, of course, in no way diminishes the loss of any (and I’m reluctant to use the word but you hopefully know what I mean) lesser, or less well known horses.
I also suppose that as someone who has been going racing four or five times a week, especially in the NH season, then I’m going to see more incidents – it doesn’t make it any easier though.
For me the worse one ever, and I was almost physically sick when I saw it, was Joe Lively.

Know exactly what you mean Paul, every horse that goes out there to run for us deserves the utmost respect, even Desert Orchid nearly didn’t make it past his first race, how lucky we were that he got up that day nobody would have ever known what he was destined to achieve and the joy that he would bring to so many during his lifetime..God bless them all.

Tony, the meeting you are thinking of runs on the 26th of October.

I agree Tony likewise I always looked forward to Grandstand on BBC1 showing racing at Chepstow which meant the new jumps season had arrived, but as you say now its just another race day. Surely the fixtures calendar could be changed to allow the meeting to be shown by Channel 4.

Incorrect tbracing the meeting takes place this Saturday
October 9, 2013 at 19:12 #454329The Beeb used to always cover Ascot as well. Every meeting was on either BB1 or BB2. Not every race but every meeting. Not sure how long that arrangement went on for. One for the quiz.
October 9, 2013 at 19:26 #454332I remember a horse called Billy Bow, a good handicapper, winning a hurdle (at Newcastle, I think) under top weight – part of that day’s ITV 7. They went to a break after the race and when they returned, John Rickman, presenting, was trying to dry his tears as he announced Billy Bow dropped dead on the track. That image has always stayed with me.
