Jockey just eased up on noble anthem in the charity race at the curragh when set for an easy win and got beat
Absolutely comical stuff
Same day as the Irish ces is won by a 150/1 shot that happens to the 13/8 fav in the charity race
September 24, 2023 at 17:32 #1664325I know they are amateurs but that was shocking. I did not have a bet but he owes the punters a huge apology.
I recognise what Jane Mangan was saying sort of in his defence – but she was being a little bit too kind. He should have won and he would if he had ridden out to the line.
September 24, 2023 at 17:33 #1664326The race itself was absolutely farcical the way it was run so to have the finish like that was just the icing on the cake
Can’t say I feel overly sorry for punters of the fav as you have to half expect something crazy to happen in charity races but that was very funny
September 24, 2023 at 17:46 #1664328What made it worse was he did not merely drop his hands. He took a pull, looked over at the eventual winner – and then took another pull!
September 24, 2023 at 17:51 #1664330And didn’t start riding again until the other horse was basically already past him
It was like he’d been told not to win and forgotten
Good old Irish racing
September 24, 2023 at 18:04 #1664335£4,300 bet at 1.01.
September 24, 2023 at 18:43 #1664343If anyone bets in a race like this they would be well advised to adjust their expectations in terms of competency in the saddle.
I didn’t have a bet on this contest and never would in such a race.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"September 24, 2023 at 18:54 #1664347Point is people did have bet in this race and didn’t get a fair run for their money, charity race or not it is still run under the same rules, isn’t it?
The more I know the less I understand.
September 24, 2023 at 19:51 #1664358I know what you mean ID. Jane Mangan made the same point on RTV. But all the jockey had to do was ride him out. It is not on for a jockey to start taking a pull and easing up half a furlong from the finish, amateur or professional.
September 24, 2023 at 19:53 #1664359Horse was well backed and jockey announced beforehand she was going to win to the broadcast crew.
Commentator said so in the commentary immediately in the aftermath of the finish. So although it was just an amateur charity race the leading jockey was rather er charitable.
But to be fair if you bet on the race you get whatever you get.September 24, 2023 at 20:02 #1664360He looked more than once at the eventual winner and still eased up after doing it – for me these type of races shouldn’t really be allowed to be a betting race simply because of the often farcical nature of them. A lot of the time you don’t even get a run for your money and that can happen pretty much within a furlong of the the race starting.
Most of the jockeys (using that in the loosest possible terms) have little to no understanding of pace (either going off too fast or way two slow) and in this particular race they were strung out all over the Curragh at a very early stage.
Easing up in those type of condition can be even more fatal as horses will slow much quicker when the jockey stop pushing in soft ground and it is vitually impossible to get that lost momentum back once they have slowed.
Painful lesson learned all round.
September 24, 2023 at 20:14 #1664361“But to be fair if you bet on the race you get whatever you get.”
Up to a point. No one expects a jockey in a charity race to ride like Ryan Moore. But when there is a 13/8 favourite, I don’t think it is unreasonable for punters to expect the rider to have a basic level of competence.
Perhaps, as Jane Mangan suggested, there should be no betting on these races. Or better still, not have them at all.
September 24, 2023 at 20:48 #1664365Does it get any better?

My Story
This year I am taking part in the Corinthian Challenge. I saw the opportunity online and it has always been a dream of mine to ride on some of the biggest race tracks in Ireland so I took the opportunity immediately. As part of my challenge not only am I aiming to raise €10,000 for Irish Injured Jockeys, I will need to maintain my weight and fitness throughout the series. I will under go daily training to perform the best as I can in my riding ability come race day. Not only riding fitness but physical also. So this is a big challange for me and everyone involved.
I am an Ex Trainee Jockey with over 8+ years experience in the horse racing industry. I worked as a work/exercise rider for 6+ years also in mutiple yards across Ireland. I then stopped riding for 2 years and started my own business as a Professional Horse Racing Tipster. I am also a registered owner in both UK and Ireland and I have 8 Racehorses in training.
My dream is to ride a winner up the Curragh with my family watching so hopefully this is the year it happens.
Thank You
September 24, 2023 at 20:51 #1664367I’ve a feeling some of that money he is donating to the Injured Jockeys may be spent on him.

September 24, 2023 at 21:19 #1664375Yikes – any kind of soft pass due to an inexperienced rider error has just seen the fat lady finish singing, exit stage left and set sail on a one way ticket west.
September 24, 2023 at 21:36 #1664379I have had a look on the Irish Racing website. The results page always has a link to stewards reports if there was an enquiry but there is nothing for the race.
Are the stewards not interested because it is a charity race? If so, is it right to have betting on the race?
September 24, 2023 at 21:55 #1664381RP doesn’t even give a race analysis for it.
The more I know the less I understand.
