I met Sam Fox at Lingfield back in the 80s, when The Sun used to sponsor an evening meeting there every July.

Very difficult girl to look in the eye.

I met Linda Lusardi at Beverley. I bought her a pint of Mild after she had £250k e/w on Strike Up The Band at 14’s with Star Sports.

TTC storms into an unassailable lead for me – it was Sam or Linda back in those days, and it was Linda by a distance for me.

And at Beverley too – if Carlsberg did days at the races….

I remember that day well. I was on here,

I tried, but to no avail. Waste of £2 that Pint of Mild was.

I see Henderson has taken some horses out at Newbury today because the ground is too soft.

A few weeks ago he took horses out at Ascot because the ground was too fast and said he would not run anything in his yard on it.

If that includes today’s horses which do not want the ground to be too soft, what ground will he run them on? Absolutely perfect good ground that is just right, like the porridge in the Three Bears story?

The number of entries for the Cheltenham Festival has fallen by 35 per cent compared to this stage five years ago, with Nicky Henderson arguing it is no longer the be-all and end-all for owners and trainers

He means, it’s no longer the be-all and end-all for owners to enter horses they know won’t get within 25 lengths of Willie’s in the hurdles and bumper.

The Mullins dominance is not a problem yet – but it could become so.

I’m finding it difficult to be enthusiastic about Cheltenham knowing that Mullins will win everything. I still like the handicaps though. We met Nicky a couple of times. Once when he was walking the course at Kelso. He used to take horses up there in the past. They had a 2 day meeting that he said he used to look forward to going to each year. And we went to Southwell when the weather had been bad and they put on a card full of bumper races. There was hardly anyone there (Southwell is a treacherous place to get to when it’s icy). Just me, Mike, Henderson and a lady in a fur coat who I think owned one of his horses. On both occasions he was very pleasant.

I like the Cheltenham Festival exactly as much as I have ever done.

More than a card-carrying member of PETA, but less than a Peaky Blinders wannabe prepared to spend a grand on sleeping in a shipping container so he can attend “the Fez.”
