Excuse me, I’m TRF’s biggest ridiculously pompous name dropper and don’t ever forget it!
Anyway, I knew Mike Cattermole when he was still at Timeform best part of 40 years ago and a very nice bloke he was too.
He doesn’t seem to have changed tbh, ditto Ed Chamberlin who I worked with on Sports Adviser a similarly long time ago.
There are actually some nice people in racing with no side to them.
Not many!

I did do a face-to-face interview with Gary Kasparov in London once for a feature in The Independent – but he never warned me about Putin and he never told me potentially the greatest hurdler of all time would emerge in 2022.
Kasparov was the Arkle of Chess, but he was no Mystic Meg, not back then, anyway.
I think meeting Amanda Barrie has the edge tbf.

To keep it racing related, I once met Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones at Windsor racecourse. I had a chat with him about the previous race and what might win the next. Nice fellow and he did not play the big star at all.
I once saw Timeform’s Jim McGrath in my hometown Halifax. I presume he was going to the offices.
Also seen a few other actors/actresses here but as everything seems to be filmed here – Last Tango in Halifax, Happy Valley, Gentleman Jack, Ackley Bridge, some Marvel TV show starring Samuel L Jackson – then it’s difficult not to spot people if you are walking near to where they are filming.
I once shared a lift with Severiano Ballesteros; we said hello, and he was just about to invite me to hang out with him when the doors opened and he got out.
Even more impressive, in the 70s I shared a lift with Sacha Distel, at the time the very epitome of Eurochic. He was tiny.
Even tinier was Joanna Lumley; I once received a writing award and she was the compere.
