I stood next to him at Newbury by one of the fences one year and didn’t have the courage to speak to him; I’ve always regretted it. When my daughter was studying history I got her to listen to his speech: he died on her wedding day. Put a bit of a damper on the day although I didn’t know about it till quite late in the evening. I’ll always remember him saying ‘ my face is against me’. I admired him so much.

I have heard it said that the clever thing about new fashion is it grabs centre stage while simultaneously contriving to make its immediate predecessor look absurd.
The Tory Party seems to have managed the exact opposite.
I never thought there would be a more ludicrous PM than Boris Johnson.
