“For sure, he’s intelligent – even 46 large a year won’t turn a moron into Oxbridge material”
Don’t know if they still do it, but for many years Oxford used to make offers of two E grades at A Level to certain “preferred” applicants, usually from the very best schools.
So getting into Oxford was no guarantee of having been a brilliant student.
July 26, 2022 at 13:51 #1608697Talking of other battles – I do wish Clive some pleasant bike rides and possibly with more time on his hands he’ll do more on his pedals. I sort of felt Drone’s reply hit the sweet spot. I like to see feisty argument and unleashed tongues but maybe I am edging more into Puwell’s stable.
I am not a real person on here and specially if gamble takes over the reins. I really enjoyed Razeen taking me to pieces verbally in Jellied Eels – I would have gladly paid for it. Others can get hurt by words. Maybe my residence in another planet helps. I watched the Mule the other night – Even Eastwood has stopped spittin’ – so change is always possible !July 26, 2022 at 13:54 #1608698I can well believe it, Gladders.
The lack of meritocracy in the UK education system is a disgrace.
All these people who bang on about what good Ofsteds schools in places like Tower Hamlets have – while sending their own children to £46,000 a year private schools with all the networking opportunities that accompany it.
It’s a recipe for depriving the nation of the best people in the most publicly-important jobs, while keeping the nation’s wealth concentrated in the hands of a tiny few.

July 26, 2022 at 16:03 #1608781Unlike Sunak who has accepted, Truss has declined an Andrew Neil interview as part of this process.
I don’t actually blame her – this isn’t a general election, she’s way ahead in polls of those who can actually vote, she’s got zero to gain and everything to lose by facing a grilling.

I’ve no problem with Liz Truss changing her views on Brexit; that her motivation is self-advancement just makes her a typical politician.
John Hume was the only politician I’ve known who deliberately set his career and party aside for the common good.July 26, 2022 at 18:22 #1608844Anybody else watching the live debate on Talk TV? Sunak being a lot less aggressive than yesterday; Truss is just Truss.
July 26, 2022 at 18:28 #1608847Sunak can’t win now – if he carried on being aggressive he’s a bully who never learns, if he tones it down it’s an admission of bullying last night.
All Truss has to do is put duct tape over her mouth and silently guide the good ship PM into port.

July 26, 2022 at 18:41 #1608852BBC News is reporting the host Kate McCann fainted and collapsed.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 26, 2022 at 19:17 #1608860The latest update is that Ms McCann is okay but they obviously couldn’t continue the broadcast.
July 26, 2022 at 19:27 #1608862Goes without saying – but will say it anyway – glad she’s ok.
She was doing a good job when it happened.
Betting markets are bizarre – Truss hardened to 1.26 with Sunak 4.8 immediately after the incident.
Can being on-camera and showing visible concern when the other one is off camera, hence can’t, shift your odds?
In this crazy modern world of intense media/social media scrutiny, I wouldn’t entirely rule it out.

We could do with a PM who is prepared to admit their mistakes and change their behaviour accordingly.
It’s all kicked off here hasn’t it? I think one of the limitations of the forum as a medium is that words can be taken differently typed rather than spoken face to face. You lose the tone, facial expressions etc and it does I think lead to some misunderstandings which can escalate.
This is a general comment, not a veiled reference to any one person or incident and I make no excuses for anyone either.
Peace and love to you all
July 26, 2022 at 23:45 #1608896My girlfriend’s dad (who is Turkish, votes Labour and had racist abuse himself) believes that if Sunak does win the leadership there is no way the British media will allow or public vote for a coloured person to be PM.
I disagreed at the time but am not so sure now seeing what goes on in the press and social media.
That said, haven’t heard that he’s had the death threat Mordaunt has apparently had..
Value Is EverythingJuly 26, 2022 at 23:56 #1608897Truss camp complaining about Sunak’s attacks on the BBC debate; but the Truss camp were just as bad attacking Mordaunt.
Value Is EverythingJuly 27, 2022 at 05:05 #1608906During yesterday’s debate, Truss asserted that “What has happened is that the tax has been raised on families through national insurance so that they are having to pay more money to the Treasury,” and went on to call this “morally wrong”.
If it was “morally wrong”, why did she vote for the NICs increases? 🤔 Team Sunak should be all over that.
