Don’t know if they still do it, but for many years Oxford used to make offers of two E grades at A Level to certain “preferred” applicants, usually from the very best schools.
So getting into Oxford was no guarantee of having been a brilliant student.
Talking of other battles – I do wish Clive some pleasant bike rides and possibly with more time on his hands he’ll do more on his pedals. I sort of felt Drone’s reply hit the sweet spot. I like to see feisty argument and unleashed tongues but maybe I am edging more into Puwell’s stable.
I am not a real person on here and specially if gamble takes over the reins. I really enjoyed Razeen taking me to pieces verbally in Jellied Eels – I would have gladly paid for it. The lack of meritocracy in the UK education system is a disgrace.
All these people who bang on about what good Ofsteds schools in places like Tower Hamlets have – while sending their own children to £46,000 a year private schools with all the networking opportunities that accompany it.
It’s a recipe for depriving the nation of the best people in the most publicly-important jobs, while keeping the nation’s wealth concentrated in the hands of a tiny few.

I’ve no problem with Liz Truss changing her views on Brexit; that her motivation is self-advancement just makes her a typical politician.
John Hume was the only politician I’ve known who deliberately set his career and party aside for the common good.Anybody else watching the live debate on Talk TV? Sunak being a lot less aggressive than yesterday; Truss is just Truss.
Sunak can’t win now – if he carried on being aggressive he’s a bully who never learns, if he tones it down it’s an admission of bullying last night.
All Truss has to do is put duct tape over her mouth and silently guide the good ship PM into port.

Can being on-camera and showing visible concern when the other one is off camera, hence can’t, shift your odds?
In this crazy modern world of intense media/social media scrutiny, I wouldn’t entirely rule it out.

We could do with a PM who is prepared to admit their mistakes and change their behaviour accordingly.
It’s all kicked off here hasn’t it? I think one of the limitations of the forum as a medium is that words can be taken differently typed rather than spoken face to face. You lose the tone, facial expressions etc and it does I think lead to some misunderstandings which can escalate.
This is a general comment, not a veiled reference to any one person or incident and I make no excuses for anyone either.

My girlfriend’s dad (who is Turkish, votes Labour and had racist abuse himself) believes that if Sunak does win the leadership there is no way the British media will allow or public vote for a coloured person to be PM.
I disagreed at the time but am not so sure now seeing what goes on in the press and social media.
That said, haven’t heard that he’s had the death threat Mordaunt has apparently had..
Value Is EverythingTruss camp complaining about Sunak’s attacks on the BBC debate; but the Truss camp were just as bad attacking Mordaunt.
Value Is EverythingDuring yesterday’s debate, Truss asserted that “What has happened is that the tax has been raised on families through national insurance so that they are having to pay more money to the Treasury,” and went on to call this “morally wrong”.
If it was “morally wrong”, why did she vote for the NICs increases? 🤔 Team Sunak should be all over that.
