Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
July 27, 2022 at 06:53 #1608913HDLG,
I think it’s important to remember when we try to analyse incidents and their impact that we aren’t typical individually and possibly little like those who have a say here.
The Tory membership were already pro-Truss overall, and she has the Mail right behind her.
Sunak needed to tread on eggshells, quietly take her policies apart with calm, polite, civilised, patient, logic, even gentle wit.
He did none of that and showed a side of himself that pretty much ensures he won’t win now.
Seldom have so many Labour voters been rooting for the more right-wing one.
It will be hideous for two years but, no pain, no gain, and Truss v Starmer is Labour’s dream General Election scenario.

I disagreed at the time but am not so sure now seeing what goes on in the press and social media.’
The press has always been toxic. It’s just that their targets were usually left wing. Some on the right are now finding out what relentless press abuse is like.
July 27, 2022 at 08:15 #1608920In socio-economic wealth terms, Sunak is the whitest bloke in Britain.
He’s hardly your typical Asian living in deprived circumstances on an inner city council estate.
I think his colour is irrelevant in this scenario.

Do you think that all the Little Englanders who yearn for the good old days of the British Empire really want to have someone of a darker skin hue, and from a former British colony which had the temerity to seek independence, as PM?
July 27, 2022 at 08:25 #1608923There is still plenty of racism about in society, more than many who like to think we’ve left all that behind realise. I doubt the Tory membership is an exception. The question is, is it a large enough section of people to swing the vote?
July 27, 2022 at 08:37 #1608924“A bit naive there, Chezza.”
Possibly, but I think the Tories mostly see wealth first and colour second.
We’ve had three Chancellors of colour, so why not a top dog?
But I will watch with interest having noted your views.

Funny how nobody has mentioned Fishy’s u-turn on Capital Gains Tax during this debate. Could have raised billions through that, but it would have meant a minor inconvenience to the ultra rich in order to massively help those most in need.
July 27, 2022 at 08:44 #1608928Have you been keeping up with the next election market Ian? It seems the one thing most of us agree on here is that Sunak has the better chance of winning an election (of the two left in the running). If that view is widely held, it follows that Labour’s odds should shorten, if only marginally, as and when the price on Truss shortens. I have no idea, only guessing.
July 27, 2022 at 09:38 #1608932I am ‘umble and very sorry – just turning the email notifications off which I must have mistakenly added( have to post something to change that ).
July 27, 2022 at 11:36 #1608946Sunak’s new pledge on domestic fuel bills VAT comes extremely late in the day. I gather he rejected the idea a few months ago. Some splendid clear thinking since his resignation as Chancellor I assume.Seems he was more bothered about his pitch for leadership than doing his job when he was the incumbent. I know Ofgem forecasts have been hopelessly wide of the mark as soon as they are announced but I can think of no other excuse for this handbrake turn.
July 27, 2022 at 12:21 #1608953I don’t mind people changing their minds- I used to believe in Santa Claus- but at least hold your hands up and admit that you were either wrong or only toeing the party line at the time.

Please stop this racist stereotyping.

I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysJuly 27, 2022 at 13:17 #1608971There was a global financial crisis in 2008-09, which the Tories blamed on New Labour. With the backing of the rightwing media, the myth that it was all Brown’s fault stuck.
—————
The 08-09 global financial crisis was not blamed on New Labour, Glad. The point both right and left wing press made was:
New Labour was blamed for not saving any money (not being “prudent” with taxpayers money) when there was a global boom prior to the 2008-09 crisis. Brown’s nickname was “prudence”. Reason why the press did not like Brown in these times was because of his previous mantra – both before New Labour’s election victory and boasting afterwards – that he’d ensure there would…
“Never be a return to the boom and bust economics of the Torires”.
ie Brown himself blamed the Tories for all the “bust”s that happened under Conservative governments, whether they were the government’s fault or not.
Brown made a rod for his own back.
Value Is EverythingJuly 27, 2022 at 13:22 #1608972Ginge- all you heard from the Tories and their cheerleaders in the press for years after they won the 2010 GE was that they had inherited the mess left by Labour, not the mess caused by the global financial crisis. They were still blaming Labour for their own financial incompetence after the Brexit vote!
The blame was placed squarely at Labour’s feet.
